The Wacom One is Wacomn's new entry level pen display. It does make some compromises along the way. First it doesn't use the Wacom Pro pen. But it does use the same pen you will find in many android tablets and windows computers. In this review I draw in in and test it out.

    Just 7 years ago, you'd pay $/€ 1000 for a 13' Cintiq with a thick, very mediocre screen (little brightness / contrast) and much more lag. I still think Wacoms are too expensive. They still often have buggy drivers. The accessoires that wear out are way too expensive. As for the life span that everybody is so positive about: The pen nibs and surface wear out quite fast. Most 'Pro' models in the past (and present) didn't even have a replaceable surface. So you once make a scratch and it's annoying you forever. I'm sorry but that's just unacceptable for such pricey hardware. I'm glad competitors finally are catching up, including the iPad / Apple Pencil. If you consider the price of a 13' Cintiq from 7 years ago, you could now buy 80% of an iPad Pro 13' plus Apple Pencil 2 instead.

I've had my Intuos 5 since 2014 and have been drawing on it for at least 3 hours a day for the past 2.5 years and I only replaced a nib once (and it wasn't even worn out tbh; just felt like replacing it). The surface does have its small scratches but like I don't even notice them when I'm drawing so it doesn't bother me at all.

    @@lliania8158 There are many models and I don't know them all and the nibs can be very different in terms of wearing out, from model to model, but that is one thing. The fact that the sheet you draw on has a nice and very subtle grain is another. That 'wore out' / changed into a grainless surface within months on my current Wacom and there is not even a replacement sheet available. I mean.. if they can't guarantee or keep up that nice grain, it's better to leave it out in the first place, because now you feel you're missing it.

    As someone who does art for a living the Wacom one really feels like the Apple of pen Displays. You are paying for the name, people will say you are paying for reliability just like the usual Android vs Iphone. Other brands have caught up to Wacom and Wacom is getting anxious. The amount of money they have invested on marketing for this is amazing.

    @@knickly5243 this is not true... you will feel the difference once you laid hands on both. Wacom still has the best and most natural feeling pen pressure signal transfer and smoothest tilt sensing. Wacom simply doesn't have the economies of scale that allows Apple to sell a great tablet with touch/pen support and decent specs for sub-$400. That and I imagine they still want to maintain their high prices on the pro end which means compromising their more consumer-focused devices. They should be glad Apple doesn't seam to be planning on offering a Pencil enabled iMac or Macbook any time soon...

    @@theinktician Yeah, I think if Apple released a iMac that had support for the Apple Pencil and were able to retain the lack of latency and great drawing experience that it has on the iPad by deeply integrating it into the hardware and software in a way Wacom could never do, I think they would have a killer product that would give the Cintiq Pros a run for their money. I'm surprised Apple hasn't done it already also since a large amount of the people buying Cintiqs end up connecting them to iMacs anyway. There's a huge crossover market they could tap into.

    It does seem like 'premium' brands treat their less expensive offerings with a punitive restriction of features beyond cost cutting. • @rhoharane

    @rhoharane

    I don't think that's quite true. Wacom does the basics right (minimum activation pressure, pen accuracy) and I don't think getting those right is for free. You also get a damned tank that lasts close to a decade. Whether you want or need those things or are willing to pay for them is up to you. If you're a 3D artist or something or aren't really the type to notice, you could live with a Huion or XP-pen, where those things don't really matter.

  • @fix0the0spade

    @fix0the0spade

    @@rhoharane Trouble is Wacom keeps upping the cost without particularly upping the value. The current Cintiq 24 Pro is about 25% more than my 24HD was, but my 24HD came with the bulletproof stand built in and a bunch of modifier keys on the side (and it weighs 65lbs!). So to get the same functions you need to buy the stand ($500) and the Remote ($100) and suddenly you've spent $3100 to get something only slightly better than my old $1800 brand new 24HD. The 4k panel and laminated screen are nice, but 1200p is fine and it's colour accurate. The actual pen experience is no better, I tried a 24pro for an hour before deciding not to replace the old one, the drop in parallax isn't worth $3k to me. Wacom has also gone to 16:9 panels, this infuriates me, 16:10 is just better, more real estate. . This new line of 'budget' Cintiqs shows Wacom are feeling the pressure from XP Pen and Huion, but at this price bracket I don't think it's enough. The other two (claim to) have a wider colour gamut and have the laminated screen. They've both had the basics down for a while now too. If I ever need a small pen display it's certainly a harder choice than it used to be.

Especially the new Huion Pro 13 (2020), which has one single USB-C connection. So what exactly is better on this thing? Because I don't see any reason to choose this over the €300 XP Pen Artist 15.6 Pro or the even cheaper Huion Kamvas Pro 13 (2020).

I will also not list non portability as a con since, assuming you wanted to get the wacom one, you're not looking for a completely portable experience anyway. I personally use a Wacom Cintiq 16 and an ipad pro but I cant rec those because of the price. -iPad 8th gen 10.2 inch + pencil (total price 424USD) Pros: portable, decent screen size, great response rate Cons: small storage. This one comes at 32gb I think but purchasing a cloud storage or using google drive or dropbox for saving files is a good work around. - Huion Kamvas Pro 16 (379USD) Pros: cheaper than the wacom one. Better screen, lightweight, looks premium Cons: the one thing wacom boasts is its lifespan so we more or less have a general idea on that. Not so new brands like huion have yet to really prove how they stand the test of time so theres that to consider - Huion Kamvas 13 2020 (250USD +40USD for the optional usb c cord) NOW THIS this is a steal for the price. Pros are pretty similar to the kamvas 16 the only difference is Android Support. So you can probably use this with an android tablet or phone. Semi portable. Cons: the USB-C cord for the Android support feature is sold separately for 40$ on Huion's website . Check out Brad's review on this one. - XP Pen 15.6 pro (400USD) When stacked against the competition, the wacom one feels lackluster and more of a downgrade both in specs, looks and pricing. That said, always do your research and watch as many reviews as you can before making a purchase.

    Hey Brad, I used to draw a long time ago in middle and high school and about a year ago I bought myself a cheap, 30 dollar Huion tablet to try digital drawing. Overall I like the idea of drawing digitally and believe that it is one of the best ways for me to improve and eventually try and make some money off of my art but I am a far ways from that(I am a very amateur artist who can only really draw from single reference photos). That being said I do miss being able to see exactly what I was drawing and find that looking at a screen while my hands are drawing out of sight is hindering my ability to draw as well as I used to. I was wondering if you had any specific recommendations for a drawing tablet that was budget-friendly(keep in mind I only spent 30 on my first drawing tablet) and has a screen that I draw directly on. I was also thinking I could just get a device such as the surface since it can function as my college laptop as well but I figure since I have a normal laptop now I could just spend the cash separately on a device purely for drawing, making the art creating experience as good as I can for my money.

Everything chugs and is super counter intuitive. Why is it slower to draw with on a Core i9 machine with 32 bg of RAM compared to a silly iPad with 4GB of RAM? Each their own, and more power to you for loving PS, but I don’t get your disgust for pro create?

    I got mine yesterday and had a quick test with Αdobe Fresco (on Windows 11). The experience is paperlike. Working on a 4K landscape image there was no visible lag. There is some very useful friction between the nib and the screen coating. Also the nib is so thin and precise that Apple's pencil looks like a toddler's marker. The glass surface is also an issue on the iPad. The precision on the Wacom is fantastic, there is no parallax and installation was a breeze. Cons: For the price in 2022, I would expect some Express Keys and an eraser switch on the back of the pan. It's no wonder people are moving to other brands like Huion

    I’m glad you didn’t say this is for someone who wants to start getting into digital art. If you want to start getting into digital art and you have $400 to do this, you better off getting into entry level iPad with Apple Pencil. This seems pretty good for someone who is married to the Wacom branding or has a supported mobile. From my experience with Wacom and the Spen I would most likely choose this as a budget alternative.

    Dream High Animation calm down. I said people starting out. As an entry point. And I’m not wrong. I’ve been using digital drawing tech for 20 years, I have opinions. They aren’t right or wrong, just based on what I’ve used. Once you have an entry level iPad, an Apple Pencil and a handful of software. It’s $400 maybe a little more for the paid software. Procreate and Rough animator is all I really need. I bought them all. The reason I say for beginners, as it’s good enough to learn the craft and do finished work. And the Huion May be only $230. You still need to plug it into things, install drivers. And desktop software is expensive. Adobe is a bit overkill for beginners. And then comes the fact you need to buy a computer for Huion. That’s another cost. Maybe $500 is enough for a computer to do drawings, but most likely you’ll need a $1000 or more computer. This is my job, so I pay a little extra for minor comforts. So I stick to Wacom and iPads for that purpose. I don’t need an iPad Pro, but I draw and work on it everyday so I spent the money, and same with my Cintiq. I’m sure Huion is fine. I’ve seen a lot of people do amazing work with it. I have tablets that work awesome, so don’t know why I would need it. If you are poor, and your pC sucks or you don’t have one, the entry level iPad is the better way to go.

    Dream High Animation the iPad doesn’t need to be connected to any other computer AND the power supply/outlet etc. iPad is fully mobile, hence it is “expensive” for a reason. You can use it anywhere, all in one. Huron 13 plus laptop costs more than an iPad.... just saying.
