Grtz to you 2: Finally you came of age as historical wargamers. TRC is a true Classic and now you all know why we fell in love with it in the late 70’s and early 80’s. A personal note: before TRC I played the War in the East from SPI. Thousands of pieces on 4 big maps. I played it solo while being a student at the University. For 4 months long at around 6 hours a day. It was epic BUT then I found a copy of TRC and it offered the same excitement but at a manageable proportion. So I love TRC since then. The other grand game from Avalon Hill was 3rd Reich at the time. One final tip: try to find the 3rd Ed by AH. The board is smaller AND the scenario lines are drawn ON the map. Much better than this version… Good luck and have more fun with TRC !

I had the AH version. Big step up from AH's Stalingrad. This and Fortress Europa were my favorite games.

The counters was was the main reason why I decided to buy the Compass version. I have the old AH game too.

From what I understand, the issue people have had with the three mountain hexes (and why the overlay was included) is because those mountains aren't there in real life and were only added to balance the game a bit by slowing the Germans down in the original design.

Just a quick note to Alexander. Regarding other games from the same designer you mentioned that you have played The African Campaign solo. However if I am not mistaken you have also played and reviewed Fortress Europa a few years ago which was also designed by John Edwards. So it is three games by this designer that you have played in total.

Yeah, I think Fortress Europa is kinda considered the third game in that trilogy, if I'm not mistaken.

I had the old AH version. Used to play my buddy by mail when "the first snow fell" LOL - a tribute to the bane of Barbarossa. It's a great game. I was terrible at it, and never once won, but I recognize it as an excellent game. And it all hinges on the weather rolls for the Axis player.

I have the old Avalon Hill version, if I'm not mistaken that version has the frontlines printed on the map as you suggest and even with the rudimentary 70s graphics (I think the frontlines were shown with dotted lines) it wasn't too distracting or unattractive so I'm not sure why they took that "feature" out.

If you are interested in doing a "classic hex & counter retrospective" series, the next game I would recommend would be the SPI classic - Battle for Germany. Especially the S&T 50 iteration. It's another game beloved by many.

I played an older version of this in the 1990's (probably, it was a long time ago anyway). The look is a major improvement. It was for me one of the first games with extra stuff like the workers, partisans, an extra movement/explotation movement. Does it still have ONE (1) all important weather roll for teh whoel front? As I recall many old games have that and there are no modifiers like "+1/-1 on the eather next turn ". Whould play this again for sure.

Have you guys played A Victory Lost? I think it is my favorite East Front game. Solid tactical game and easily playable in a day. It is one of those games that needs an updated version and modern reprint. Please do a review, would love to hear what you think!

Not trying to be a jerk -- I don't seem to need to try! -- but Pyotr Bagration was a general in the Russian army [altho his family was Georgian] who fought against Napoleon in 1812, dying at the battle of Borodino. His name is not pronounced the way it looks to English speakers. It should be "Bah GRAH tee on."

I think overall this is a good game but it has some issues. Mainly that its more about making calculations and "odds-hunting". I prefer systems where you cannot examine an opponents stack. The game also feel really on rails for the most part. There doesn't really seem like there is a ton of decision making. Thanks so much for the review as always.

T24, T25, and U24, southeast of Lwow. If you look on a topographic map of the area you can see a slight elevation increase in that area. Whether or not the terrain is sufficiently rugged to justify representation as mountains with a doubling of the defender's strength is a matter of debate.
