    Want to get an in-depth look of the T1+? Then check out this Russian channel named Hi-Fi Energy. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYCZp9mal9ebk8o.html. Don't speak Russian? That's cool. There are subtitles. This guy does a great job of taking apart the speaker, showing you all whats inside, and seems to know enough to recognize what's common for the price and what isn't. Absolutely worth your time!

    Sean, a question: When you say a speaker is 'warm' is that the opposite of 'bright' or something else? I have heard some people say a speaker sounds 'dark' . . . so maybe that (whatever it is) is the opposite of 'bright'? But what the heck is 'warm'?

  • @ZeroFidelity

    @ZeroFidelity

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@redstarwraith I posted numerous videos about this subject. Videos that almost nobody paid attention to, interestingly enough! I may have to begin linking them to my reviews from now on. So it all has to do with the perception of sound as it relates to how a product (in this case, a speaker) projects sound, the materials it uses, and its measurable frequency response. To simplify this to an almost criminal degree, let me give you a simple overview: A "bright" or "Forward" sounding speaker usually features a measurable bump somewhere in the treble response. Either that, or you will see a dip in the upper midrange which will give you the perception of a prominent treble response even though it's measurably 'flat'. On the flip side, warmth usually refers to the manifestation of a bump somewhere in the midrange or bass region. . Of course, it goes WAY deeper than this... but the above is the general overview.

    Sean, as you’ve gotta know, you’ve got an uncanny ability to explain in detail and in depth, just how speakers and other gear sounds. Enough so, that I would easily buy something upon your recommendation or based on a review of yours, and the comparisons make choices even easier for people. Just the fact that Eric Alexander changed the crossover design of the DI’s after your review really says a lot. As you know, those are now the best selling speakers in the Tekton line, and you definitely had a hand in that. I bought my Pendragons around then, which I still love to this day, and I did so knowing that Eric truly cares and listens to what people really want. I know I’m getting off topic of the Emotivas, but I just wanted to say thank you for all your excellent reviews of HiFi gear. Keep up the great work. Now, if only you were a vinyl guy and reviewed some turntables, cartridges, phono pres, etc. 😉 Happy Easter, and thanks again, man!

    I appreciate it man. The truth is that the DI's were already selling like hotcakes well before I reviewed them. Like a lot of designers, Eric takes feedback seriously and will investigate problems and do his best to come up with solutions to those problems. All I did was pass along some observations. Some of them I went public with, and others I kept between myself and Eric. Ultimately, he was the one who made the decision to act on it. I did nada! But your comment hits upon I think one of the bigger benefits of an accurate review: If manufacturers are willing to pay attention, it may contribute to them creating a superior product later down the road. Thanks for tuning in this whole time!

    Zero Fidelity Hey, man. Thanks for the reply. I agree very much that manufacturers need to listen to and pay attention to, then possibly (and hopefully) act upon reviews, but by reputable reviewers such as yourself. With more and more of them selling direct, that holds even more true. I love Eric’s designs, and he’s also a great guy. We talked HiFi, but mostly speakers for a good while when I called to order my Pendragons, so he also listens to his customers. Now, that’s the type of company I wanna buy from! As far as the DI’s go, I think ya probably did a lil’ bit more than nada. lol No matter how it happened, thanks for being rather transparent regarding the situation. I’ve heard the DI’s and they sound spectacular. I may eventually upgrade to a pair of em, but I’m enjoying my P’dragons for now. Thanks again, and take care, Sean.

    Hi Sean, I agree with other comments on your ability to describe sound characteristics accurately. What I find useful, and what I use as cue, is the description on reference to specific music genres. For example, in what music genre each speaker would be best, what type of instruments. For example, I have the br03 with the IOTAVX. I find it suits the music I listen to perfectly, due to its midrange. That is classical music prominently with string instruments. Rock/jazz. And some old school electronic music, like IDM such as Autechre, break beat, drum and bass. For electronic genres is does well on the bass, but not as well as ELACs on synths. The bro3 is best when vocals and string instruments are prominent. Maybe some reference to instruments/music genres can help convey the sound of a speaker/amp better in the absence of direct experience? Thanks for your great work.

    The mistake Emotiva makes with their speakers is designing them to be 4 Ohms. It scares off people running just AVR's and it comes off as just a loss leader attempt to push people to buy their amplifiers to run them. Make them usable on an AVR. the amp sales will come later. Although, if we are assuming there is some hopeful amplifier sales generation built into the speaker price(which I am assuming), the price would probably have to increase. 4 Ohms is fine when your target market is two channel but thats obviously not the case here. This is all total assumption on my part, of course. Great review, as usual!

    Many other speaker brands have done the same, including ones that do not sell amps. Most AVR's (except the top of the line models) can not handle 4-ohm loads because of power supply compromises to keep costs down and comply with UL ratings.

  • @markroze3641

    @markroze3641

    You can run them with a normal AVR. I’m currently using an entry level Denon. It’s a 5 channel receiver. 75 watts (with 2 channels driven). It’s not even rated for 4 ohm (6-16 ohm). Check out the impedance chart for the t1+. I think the majority of speaker manufacturers would call it a 6 ohm speaker. I do think you’re right about emotiva using the 4 ohm rating to push people toward their amps. Although when I reached out to them and told them my AVR specs they did say it should be fine. So they didn’t try to push me toward their amps. And you’re right about it scaring people off. I was nervous at first myself but then I talked to people who have them and they said it wasn’t an issue, and reached out to emotiva just to be sure. imgur.com/gallery/9MMLMmK

Would that still be the case with the bigger model? Lastly, if you're going to mention home theater use why not specify the accompanying match of center and surrounds. Just a thought hommie. The kids are gone and time to get back into 2 channel sound. Unfortunately, stereo stores don't exist anymore for listening, so reviews are the only source. Paid $825 for the T1+ from Emotiva. A/B'd them with the Emotivas for my wife, who could care less about stereo stuff, and even she couldn't believe the difference. I'm trying to sell the T1+ pigs for $495 and can't unload them. Hey Sean, Interesting description of the sound on these, I would have thought them to be a bit shrill and thin, but not having heard them, that is just air. You know I'm a detail and tone hound and have not had good experiences with Air Motion tweeters, but that was with Golden Ear Tritons, not with every such speaker. I like my bass to be accurate, clean and quick, not boomy. It would be interesting to put them against Golden Ear Tritons, which I find to be an extreme V shape. Great for HT, but not so good for music. The off axis performance is impressive! Thanks for the link to the Russian review, I'm all over that. :)

    I wouldn't consider these entry level at all. Price points influence people too much. As with a lot of different subjects or products, there is expensive garbage, and inexpensive quality.. and everything in between. I would consider these speakers as almost a "2 step" upgrade from something entry level. If someone is just getting into the hobby and purchasing these, they skipped a few steps in the audiophile discovery process and should consider themselves very lucky. I'm just saying! 😎

I have both speakers pointed right at me, tweeters ear level with the grilles off and I hear no brightness. I don’t hear the booster treble he’s referring to. Definitely clear, crisp highs. Same here. Been about a year now. I thought they sounded a bit bloated on the low end in my system at first, but they've really smoothed out with time. I find them inviting and only harsh on bad recordings or super-loud passages in upper register. What I did notice was a strange vibration at a very specific frequency coming from one speaker. Especially from vocals. I took that speaker apart and taped down wires coming from the x-over to the tweeter and the vibration sound went away. Don't know if wires or something loose...

    Phase coherent may be the terminology for the sound character being similar when seated, or standing on/off axis. M&K used a "phase-focused crossover design". Very consistent sound across the sound stage, whether seated direct center, or directly in front of the speaker. Sure the soundstage shifts due to the stereo image, but timbre and volume level remains consistent.

    Sean, this is one case is which a simple, quick frequency response measurement would really be useful. So when you say that the treble is tilted up it would be nice to know if this is an objective, measurable phenomenon, rather than just a by-product of their voicing or something else entirely. For example, I used to be a big Paradigm fan, but I always thought that the treble seemed exaggerated. Then I measured them. And, yea!, it was exaggerated, at least on the 2 or 3 models that I measured.

  • @ZeroFidelity

    @ZeroFidelity

    A *reliable*, in-room FR graph won't be able to determine the difference between the speaker voicing and other contributing variables. I do get what you're laying down though.

  • @tlhuffman

    @tlhuffman

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ZeroFidelity Sean, in-room frequency response measurements are difficult to make accurately, but that is primarily in the bass. Near field measurements @ 1 kHz and above should be fine within reasonable tolerances and excess treble energy really shows up. I just wonder if the airy, spacious, and detailed reproduction of the Heil folded ribbon can be subjectively mistaken for excess response.

  • @ZeroFidelity

    @ZeroFidelity

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@tlhuffman The difficulty is all the way around. If you put the mics close to the speaker, you'll get odd results that do not at all translate to what you will hear at a more realistic listening distance. If you set the mics where your head is at, now 50% of the sound that you're picking up isn't even directly from the speaker. Sure, you can do outdoor measurements, but that again, will not replicate what somebody will hear in the real world. I'm not trying to invalidate in-room FR plots. They are the easiest to understand graph, but also the most misleading in my experience. Especially when taken from amateurs outside of anechoic environments. As for the folded ribbon: Bumping up the treble will always provide a sense of "more detail" even if it's delivery is somewhat forced/artificial in nature. Doesn't matter what the high frequency driver is. Couple that voicing to the natural behavior of an AMT and the use of Kapton mylar, and you've got the perfect recipe for a very prominent top-end.

  • @tlhuffman

    @tlhuffman

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@ZeroFidelity The only reason I even mentioned this is that a lot of speaker manufacturers are using AMT tweeters these days--Golden Ear Triton speakers are a good example. I think that this is the first review that I have encountered that noted a bumped-up treble response for this type of driver. I would just be interested to know if that subjective reaction is the result of an actual exaggerated response or simply an artifact of the unique way that AMTs render treble. I decided to take a near field and far field measurement of my speakers (Tekton Ulfberhts) to explore this further. The Ulfberht uses a conventional soft dome tweeter. Here are the results. www.chromapure.com/bugtest/Comparison.jpg As you can see, for the most part the far field/near field measurements are quite similar with one difference. In the near field, there is a steadily rising response of about 5db in the treble starting at about 4.5k. I didn't measure above 10k. However, in the far field, close to the listening position, that rising response is almost completely gone. 3k to 10k is nicely flat. The response around the crossover region is a little bumpy, but the treble is fine. This tells me something. Speakers should probably measure with a somewhat exaggerated treble in the near field (1 M) because by the time the sound reaches the listening position--especially if you have some soft, sound absorbing material in the room (I have a thick carpet in this room)--much of that excess energy will have dissipated.

    Nice review. I want to buy these to replace my broken B&W 703s. (kids destroyed the tweeters) For anyone who does use a sub here is my experience. I built a theater room and when I tested my B&W speakers I found that they had a big drop at 65hz-55hz. I found where my sub (JL audio Fathom f13) had a boost at 65-55hz. The hand off when setting the crossover at 65hz was awesome. If your room is a normal room then even if you have a huge speaker that can play to 20hz, the room modes will have drops above that. It taught me that a big speaker might not always be the best option although I know 2 channel listening with big speakers is still super cool even if the bass isn't perfect. If anyone has these speakers let me know what you think of them. I'm looking to by very soon.

    Altering the polarity won't do anything good, but, you could easily put in some low-value resistors in-line with the tweet to take things down a notch. Or to promote something that's not warranty busting, somebody could bi-amp the speakers. Just run a smooth/rolled off sounding amp to the top terminals, and that may do the trick as well. Or.. and this is what I'd encourage the most.. you try what I explained in the video, and get your ears situated between the AMT and the midrange cone, and then experiment with placement. Lots of options.

The bass just seems weak on 2 channel but at times on movie modes I think my sub is still on just set lower and realize it's off so I know the towers can make great low end..
