Review: Sony NP-F970 AA Battery Adapter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Sony NP-F970 battery can be used as external power for cameras, external monitors and LED lights. If you ever forget to charge your battery (or need an extra one), here is an inexpensive adapter that will let you mimic the F-970 using six AA batteries.

I like how you are now started to inject humour into your videos. They were a bit dry before but its nice to see you come to life now. Keep on making videos. Every single video you do has some meaning to me and my own "frugal" life/career/hobby

WOW! Super high energy review Scott. Harkens back to heady days of the Billy Mays TV advertising blitz of the 2000's. All that was missing was an ACT NOW and a BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!

Ha! Yeah, it's the difference between shooting a video at 11:00am instead of midnight. Wish I could do that every time...

I have the Neewer branded version of these. $6.90 each on amazon. I got three maroon and three white ones. Works perfect with my Aputure LED lights. No modification needed.

Nice review, but is there anyway that you could make some kind of DIY power supply that would work from the mains so you don't need to keep fitting new batteries to it. Maybe a 12v power supply soldered to the fittings so i could run my LCD lights from it

Thanks for this video. I'd sure like to find one like this that holds 18650 or 26650 rechargeable batteries. I went to the Falconeyes, and they are only showing us to through their 2014-2015 catalog. Maybe they are out of business now?

Anything for the Canon XA10 or HFS30? I'm certain in each battery are button batteries like you see inside AAs. A search on E-bay, Google and Amazon turn up nothing. Oh, the best way to know if a battery is charged? Put a rubber band around it. If there is no rubber band it has been used. AA's? Band them in 4's or any grouping and if you see them without a rubber band they are used.

ive found myself with a few of those big 970 completely dead after a few months, and my guess is because one or a few (not necesarily all of the inside batteries are dead) im guessing this would be a better solution since i can only put batteries that i know are in good working condition and dispose any bad AA, my question is, How lond did it lasted and if it worked all the way during its lifetime? or any "internal component????" made this device unsusable even with good AA's

I'm currently testing mine out. My Aputure lights require two battery packs. I'm using a mix of Sobro and Eco USBcell USB rechargeable batteries. The batteries aren't as good as Eneloop batteries but you can charge them via direct USB. Stop watch says an hour and thirty plus minutes, which is already better than the knock off Sony NP batteries. It's already a better investment for me because I've gotten knockoff Sony batteries dead on arrival before. And now I don't have to charge Sony batteries anymore.

Is it my imagination or is the battery door bulging out a few millimeters after you load it with batteries? Not a good sign for build quality.

I didn't notice any bulge. It's snug to be sure, but I guess time will tell if it's TOO snug.

the design has a slight curve on either side of the hatch, perhaps to give it added strength when closed? something like that.

Got 5 of those from Neewer. Let's do some math. The adapter uses 6x 1.2v 2450mah AA batteries, which in series gives a single 7.2v 2450mah. Each adapter costs 6,9eur + 6,99eur for a pack of 4 AA Ladda batteries (IKEA) makes a total cost of 10,49 considering 6 batteries are needed. Grand total of 17,48eur for a 2450mah battery. Found by using it, they should not be charged in an NP-F*** charger, it doesn't have protection and batteries will die, so I opted to buy a 12 battery charger from IKEA for 39.90eur. Considering that we can get a 2x NP-f550 2600mah for roughly 20eur/usd it's a better deal. Anyways for convenience in the field, or if we happen to have A LOT of AA laying around might be interesting, otherwise buy NP-F550's, NP-F950's or even NP-F970's.

You seem to be missing the point, it's not intended to be an inexpensive replacement for NP-F970 rechargeable batteries, it's an emergency backup for when you have no charged NP-F batteries left. Getting special rechargeable AA cells and chargers to make these into everyday batteries is not the intended use, and really is wasteful. Where I work the on-air units don't use NP-F batteries, but the unit that makes pre-recorded stuff (bumpers, teasers, features etc.) does. One of the exceptions is the Steadicam monitor. Whenever the Steadicam is used, the operator needs to get charged NP-F batteries from the other production room. The problem is that he's part-time and weekends, and that room is closed on weekends. So rather than call in an engineer on his day off or take someone else from their job, we have a couple of these in case someone forgets to leave a couple of NP-F batteries out. We buy AA cells by the case, so there are plenty of them in the studio. Even ENG crews can carry them, and if the need arises, run into a store and buy AA cells.
