Thank you David, for the review. I just wanted to comment about your comment at the end about the disc being full-price. Consumers for the most part (I don't want to say everyone, because you have to be careful about universalisms of course), want to pay as least as possible for a good or service. However when it comes to CDs, I look at it this way: we can go to concerts and pay dozens if not hundreds of dollars for tickets. You have the concert and it's done. With CDs you own it, and can listen to it as many times as you'd like, so in the long-run it's worth it.

Thank you so much for these videos Dave. I haven't done so much binge watching/listening since "Cheers" came out on Netflix!

Another viewer mentioned the EMI recording. There was a Slatkin/St. Louis disk on EMI with exactly the same repertory, but in a different order and it seemed like significantly different timings. The date on that was 1987, I think. Dave, in your opinion, how do the two disks compare? The mesmerizing, slow Lullaby on the Vox disk is really beautiful and haunting .

Great to have these back in print. I never did like the packaging of the original Vox twofers, so I like this classy new line of single discs, even if we lose the budget aspect.

If you are referring to the cover art and the notes? Yes, the VOX boxes do have a "generic" look with many, many treasures inside. Hear, Hear! VOX.

Another VOX release that I had on LP and now on CD. Mine is a two cd set from Vox THE COMPLETE GERSHWIN (CDX-5007) It contains both orchestral and piano works by Gershwin. The pianist is JEFFREY SIEGEL. I also have the Gershwin release Maestro Slatkin and Saint Louis did for EMI. For me the Vox issue is more superior. Can't agree more with Dave, THE CUBAN OVERTURE sounds fantastic, you here all the percussion. If you don't want to wait for the new Naxos version to release the Gershwin Piano music, maybe you can find my version in some cd shop's bargain bin. You won't be disappointed. THANKS DAVE....

The VOX album still sounds great! Fred. I am holding it in my hand right now. It's good to hear "Catfish Row" and the "Second Rhapsody". VOX has offered me many delights at a bargain basement price: "The symphonies of Carlos Chavez, wonderful readings of the piano and orchestral music of Rachmaninov, the chamber music of Gabriel Faure". A diverse catalog indeed!

Thanks to one of your earlier videos, I learned we have a certain George Mendelssohn-Bartholdy to thank for creating VOX Records. In my cash-strapped youth, VOX was practically a godsend. Now that Naxos is redistributing the VOX catalogue, I simply want to give credit once again to its founder.

The original Vox Box LP releases were mastered using QS matrix encoding for four-channel surround sound. Do you know if this new CD edition retains the matrix surround encoding?

Funny you should mention the Cuban Overture in short order after the “interpreter-reliant composers” talk. I don’t think Gershwin is always an interpreter-reliant composer, but the Cuban Overture most definitely needs some intervention. In the long middle section, the orchestration is soupy and the phrasing is not obvious. The conductor needs to do a lot of work to sort it all out. (Having conducted it, I can attest to this.) But when it gets sorted, it’s a fantastic ride, and I agree, it should be performed much more often!
