Review- Should you remove snow from your solar panels? Sno Pro 23' telescoping pole
Sno pro, snow pro remove snow on your solar panels.
After some quick math and some personal experience, cleaning off your solar panels (modules) isn't such a bad idea, if you do it safely.

Thank you for this video. Great job. we were wondering about how folks do this when we were observing all of the homes in East Hartford with Solar Panels.
I enjoy your vids, thanks man. You inspired me to switch out every light in my home with LED bulbs, huge cost savings!
I use a plastic roof rake with a rubber door sweep attached to the bottom edge. Works very well.
Thank you for the great information, I will be ordering one today.
Like the wind noise. Great idea.
I have a high roof on the south and low angle panels at home the office is an old building with steep angle and the snow clears itself. I clear the roof after about 2 feet falls and the weather warms to 0 degrees Celsius. I have to climb up above from the north side of the house and push down so hence the 2-3 feet to stand in. It is solid when there is a lot. We shovel our roofs here. I lose a lot in Nov., Dec waiting for these conditions. I wish there was an automated system. I make 80 cents a KWh. Yes not a typo 80 cents. Under the older Ontario microfit program.
this is awesome panel.. great work..
Thank you for the avalanche demo! Noted.
INTERESTING!!!! I liked it and I subscribed!
The snow on the ground last winter stayed about knee high through last winter (in the Detroit area), and if I would have pulled the snow off the roof, the pile would have been over my head, and I think that would have made it impossible to complete.
Awesome, you got vacuum solar system, too!
My works too. Used Avasva handbooks and build it with no problems.
great , thank you sir
I was thinking of buying one of these to clear snow off my panels but its been years now and no snow yet. Greetings from Jamaica.
I wonder could the ground mount solar water heater be used to melt snow off the panels on roof. That way no hard cleaning, only clean the water heater.
how did you generate this graph? please send me a website i can generate the data distriduted this way! i need it for an engineering project! very much appreciated!!
How much energy do you get with those panels on a cloudy day in winter? I say how much% do you lose?
I don't my panels are on a top of pole mount. They are 5-6 feet off the ground. They are set at a winter angle of 65° to maximize solar electricity production and snow doesn't stick to that steep a angle. Plus I need 6 feet of snow on the ground before I start having snow issues with my panels. Been off grid solar powered only since 1983 this is how the pros do it in snow country.
Sir where do you stay? I love the snowfall.... please share
Until the snow and clouds pass you are not generating any electricity. Once the sun comes out and the temperatures improve the snow will slide off the PV modules. Use the snow rake to clear snow from the edges of roof and roof valleys that are blocking snow from sliding off.
I have solar panels on my home through a solar PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), and in that agreement, I don't own the panels and in my contract, am not allowed to touch the panels. I also have a steep pitched roof, so am not comfortable going on the roof, so I won't attempt any kind of cleaning anyway. I can tell you, however, that when there is snow build-up on the panels, when the glorious sun does come out, the snow slides off of those panels in an avalanche! I was clearing the snow from my driveway when a big slide happened. If I didn't know any better, I would swear that somebody threw a shovel full of snow at my back, but it was just a huge slide from the panels. Of course, once that snow slides off of the roof, the energy productions starts right up again.

I am nervous I would get electrocuted.
Good idea would work great on my ground mount. Better than my soft push broom duct taped to a painters pole.

They actually sell a snow removal car version. The short handle would work for you and be cheaper.
Would it be possible to inject a reverse DC current in the Solar panels in order to heat the surface and melt the snow?

There are no systems that do this, truth be said, I don't think there ever will be. You would use more energy removing the snow then you would make back clearing it faster.

The panels heat up when they are working. As soon as the snow is off and they start producing they melt any left over snow.
Good practical video. I also have a great southern facing roof with no shade but a low pitch roof (4 x 12) with an angle of approx. 18 degrees. I am concerned about using solar panels given the snow considerations in the Northeast. Any thoughts and insights from your experience? Thanks
@NJRESolar

I would not worry about it. 18° isn’t so bad. As a perspective, all roof top flat commercial projects are at five or 10°. Where in the northeast are you talking about New Jersey or Maine

yes, both together. Or at least at some place
I would install the panels at enough angle that snow will slide off.i built a air system that blew the snow and water off mine.seen too many damaged broke and wire pulled out, from raking.windshield wipers work also, deicer spray and automate the system.to much upkeep.sold mine and never looked back.junk.
extendable paint pole
Are you still able to collect energy on overcast days like that once they've all cleared from snow? Very interesting, thank you for sharing!

whats the best way to clean panels from general dirt build up?

if you live in an area with significant rain, its not really a priority, however if you're in south california or area with lots of dust, a good garden hose with fine tip spray is good. Just be careful up there, can be very dangerous.

stevencox75 : In the UK we are advised to clean only with a hose (not jet wash) as any pressure on the soiling will inevitably scratch the panel surface causing light scatter and panel inefficiency, getting worse the more you wash. So that saving of $4 a day will soon be whittled away.

I found an outdoor windex hose attachment to put on a hose, worked really well
I know this is old...but i have a question.....I installed two panels on top Of my roof in my RV they are flat.....the snow on top will be brake my panles or they will be fine?

elmaster22 I know this is an old question, but wanted to answer just in case. If the panel is a good panel, from a reputable company, they should be just fine. Most panels are made to withstand some hail falling on them. Some snow shouldn't be heavy enough to break them. Now if you are driving with that snow up there, that can be dangerous for other drivers, mainly because of how it creates a storm like cloud that they can't see through. I have panels on my van, and last winter I saw that happening. Though because of the road conditions I want driving fast, and there was almost no one there, I took note of that.
just decided I'm not doing solar..........not looking for more work in the winter + too many cloudy days.

u don't have to do this ever… the panels clear themselves. Yearly production already assumes these losses. If you want to clear snow, you'll make extra power. No one suggested you need to do more work, easy there Spockmcoy
How much roughly does a 10khm solar system cost

I have gotten quotes around 30-32k for a 10kw-DC rated system.
Can I ask where you got your extendable pole? I would need a very long one and would prefer non-conductive.

I know the blade is soft, but the way you heave it up to the top row of panels and let it fall onto them...that looks like it might damage the panels due to the weight of the blade. You've never caused damage that way?

Doug Bailey I use to install PV panels. And they are very durable. Installers have walked on them, purposely or on accident, and they're fine.
I could do it in the fraction of time with a water hose connected to a hot water source and just wash the snow off from the ground
@NJRESolar

Rocky, not the greatest idea. Pour hot water on a cold surface, particularly glass, and you are creating a highly probable glass shatter. Furthermore, the hot water is money energy usage, then the savings of removing snow.

@@NJRESolar Well actually since I live in Iowa and have done it a number of times with no negative effects...your wrong...it works very well and quickly. Also do not be silly I never said boiling friggin water. Just moderate hot or even just as warm as your skin can tolerate. It does not take pipping hot water to melt snow .
they melt jest fine on there own.
Use a snow roller blind...
Snow removal off solar panels? That’s not mentioned in any sales or usage pitches! Nor is no wind during summer doldrums for windmills. Luckily you have some access from the ground to pull snow. Many don’t.
@NJRESolar

Yes, not required, but if you’re anxious to get back in business and want some exercise, and can do it safely from the ground, some do.
Removing snow with the wrong tools will scratch the panels, and that will reduce the energy you can get out of them..

agreed. this tool is the right tool.
Chickens in the background...
around 5:30 you are hitting your panels...3$ a day ? not worth it, clean your neighbors driveway if you like to work, I am sure 50$ bottle of wine will come your way, plus nicer neighbors.
