Review- Should you remove snow from your solar panels? Sno Pro 23' telescoping pole

Sno pro, snow pro remove snow on your solar panels.
After some quick math and some personal experience, cleaning off your solar panels (modules) isn't such a bad idea, if you do it safely.

    I have a high roof on the south and low angle panels at home the office is an old building with steep angle and the snow clears itself. I clear the roof after about 2 feet falls and the weather warms to 0 degrees Celsius. I have to climb up above from the north side of the house and push down so hence the 2-3 feet to stand in. It is solid when there is a lot. We shovel our roofs here. I lose a lot in Nov., Dec waiting for these conditions. I wish there was an automated system. I make 80 cents a KWh. Yes not a typo 80 cents. Under the older Ontario microfit program.

    The snow on the ground last winter stayed about knee high through last winter (in the Detroit area), and if I would have pulled the snow off the roof, the pile would have been over my head, and I think that would have made it impossible to complete.

    I wonder could the ground mount solar water heater be used to melt snow off the panels on roof. That way no hard cleaning, only clean the water heater.

    I don't my panels are on a top of pole mount. They are 5-6 feet off the ground. They are set at a winter angle of 65° to maximize solar electricity production and snow doesn't stick to that steep a angle. Plus I need 6 feet of snow on the ground before I start having snow issues with my panels. Been off grid solar powered only since 1983 this is how the pros do it in snow country.

    Until the snow and clouds pass you are not generating any electricity. Once the sun comes out and the temperatures improve the snow will slide off the PV modules. Use the snow rake to clear snow from the edges of roof and roof valleys that are blocking snow from sliding off.

    I have solar panels on my home through a solar PPA (Power Purchase Agreement), and in that agreement, I don't own the panels and in my contract, am not allowed to touch the panels. I also have a steep pitched roof, so am not comfortable going on the roof, so I won't attempt any kind of cleaning anyway. I can tell you, however, that when there is snow build-up on the panels, when the glorious sun does come out, the snow slides off of those panels in an avalanche! I was clearing the snow from my driveway when a big slide happened. If I didn't know any better, I would swear that somebody threw a shovel full of snow at my back, but it was just a huge slide from the panels. Of course, once that snow slides off of the roof, the energy productions starts right up again.

    There are no systems that do this, truth be said, I don't think there ever will be. You would use more energy removing the snow then you would make back clearing it faster.

    The panels heat up when they are working. As soon as the snow is off and they start producing they melt any left over snow.

    Good practical video. I also have a great southern facing roof with no shade but a low pitch roof (4 x 12) with an angle of approx. 18 degrees. I am concerned about using solar panels given the snow considerations in the Northeast. Any thoughts and insights from your experience? Thanks

  • @NJRESolar

    I would not worry about it. 18° isn’t so bad. As a perspective, all roof top flat commercial projects are at five or 10°. Where in the northeast are you talking about New Jersey or Maine

    if you live in an area with significant rain, its not really a priority, however if you're in south california or area with lots of dust, a good garden hose with fine tip spray is good. Just be careful up there, can be very dangerous.

  • @sirjohng1

    @sirjohng1

    stevencox75 : In the UK we are advised to clean only with a hose (not jet wash) as any pressure on the soiling will inevitably scratch the panel surface causing light scatter and panel inefficiency, getting worse the more you wash. So that saving of $4 a day will soon be whittled away.

  • @alericjohansen6775

    @alericjohansen6775

    6 жыл бұрын

    elmaster22 I know this is an old question, but wanted to answer just in case. If the panel is a good panel, from a reputable company, they should be just fine. Most panels are made to withstand some hail falling on them. Some snow shouldn't be heavy enough to break them. Now if you are driving with that snow up there, that can be dangerous for other drivers, mainly because of how it creates a storm like cloud that they can't see through. I have panels on my van, and last winter I saw that happening. Though because of the road conditions I want driving fast, and there was almost no one there, I took note of that.

    u don't have to do this ever… the panels clear themselves. Yearly production already assumes these losses. If you want to clear snow, you'll make extra power. No one suggested you need to do more work, easy there Spockmcoy

    I know the blade is soft, but the way you heave it up to the top row of panels and let it fall onto them...that looks like it might damage the panels due to the weight of the blade. You've never caused damage that way?
