A fair review. Personally I don't feel the D-808 could hold a candle to the 909X so I did the opposite and sold the D-808. The 909X outperformed the D-808 on all bands. In terms of design, ergonomics, build quality and feel there's really no contest between the two but that comes at a price. Well worth paying in my view.

I own one of these and I have lots of fun with it and I get so much out of it every time I use it. It's also a handsome and neat looking radio imo. You can get them also in a white color but I preferred the black. Thanks for this review!

Just as an fyi, the audio jack you mentioned for connecting to a cassette recorder, well, as it turns out, Sangean has a digital one that uses that same dual output standby / Line Out jacks with an sd card. It costs about $100 and can run on double AA's. It is called the DAR-101. I use it all the time with the newer released version of this radio, the 909X2

Thank you very much for the great information on this radio. I grabbed this radio on amazon for 164 refurbished from Sangean . I couldn't pass it up with the nice white color and lcd screen it has its bad points but has many good points to. The tecsun 880 is very nice and should compliment this with it for test along with the tecsun 600.

Yes, I agree that on the built in telescopic whip lacks sensitivity for the problem of matching that you stated. It's about $200.00, or a bit less sometimes, and the smaller, well rated Tecsun 880 is good, in a close price range. So those are a few of my comments about it.

I had a DX398 back when I was a kid* until a lightning storm blew it up when lightning struck the shortwave antenna. Loved that radio right now actually debating getting a 909x, have a few other Sangeans and I like them for their sound quality the wrf1 which I got for web stations and an hd18 for local stations. Really strange how with a flagship they didn't see fixing the antenna issue as important as the antenna as they had over 2 decades to see the big issues with the original receiver.

You need to set the tuning steps to 10 kHz for North America to go to 1710 kHz
