Who Am I?
I am a Management Consultant in real life but in my Bootlosophy channel, I make videos about boots and all things boot-related. This channel posts reviews of boots, unboxing of new boots, and follow-up reviews, and in doing so, may explore the philosophy of the brands from time to time!
I have owned boots for decades, but to be honest I have owned them as functional pieces of footwear. It wasn't until early 2020 when COVID struck that I started online shopping for boots to an obsessive degree. I love the aesthetic of boots and I love finding out more about how they are made. I now own an insane number of boots, and one day I may sell some of them (just not right now).

I agree with your bootlosophy. Anyone who cares about the leather cork leather combination superiority probably has more than 10 pairs of heritage boots which makes longevity redundant. Those 10+ rotating boots will basically never wear out. It might be 10 years before even needing a reheel. You have to worry more about being able to break in all those boots which could be never if you have 50+ boots. Poron is fine if you have a big rotation.

Agreed, I tend to keep 3 primary boots with a 4th as needed for extra dry time. But it takes forever even that way before I need a resole.

I think Poron is fine in most circumstances. It is very resilient and much better than the foams used in the 1980s and 1990s for sneakers. Modern foams are used in running shoes and when you run the impact on your feet is up to three times your body weight and they can take a lot of abuse. In addition it should be noted that these have a leather midsole the same as more traditional boots and also poron in the welt cavity which can be replaced the same as cork when a re-sole takes place. So if the insole cushioning goes flat it still provides the same or more cushioning than a traditional boot and it's not as if a leather insole provides much cushioning . There were people reporting that there Thursday Boots had gone flat in the early days (though not so much now) but I suspect that was down to having a lot of cushioning and then losing some of it. There will of course be other factors like the weight of the person, how they walk, how they treat their boots (rotate, allow to dry etc.) which will decide how a boot wears.

@@Vultain I am somebody with a LOT of boots like Teik and don't do manual work, so my boots don't get a lot of wear compared to some people but I own more Thursday boots than any other brand and still buy them even though I own multiple boots from brands such as Crockett and Jones, Cheaney, Carmina, Viberg, Grant Stone etc. I really think that for most people, regardless of market segment, modern foams like poron are a good alternative. And even Viberg were found to be using foam in the welt cavity of their boots. Poron is not a cheaper alternative to cork for instance which is itself full of rubber or synthetic binding agents and as far as I can tell Poron costs more (obviously don't know wholesale prices). There will be some people like yourself who need a very firm footbed for support but there is this mantra in the boot world of traditional good, modern bad and cushioning is really bad. Then half these people change their sole to a well cushioned, synthetic, Vibram Christy sole because their traditionally made boots are too hard if worn all day. Another myth is that your boots are going to be re-soled indefinitely and your leather insole is never going to wear out and I've seen enough videos from Bedos or Trenton and Heath to know that most people destroy their uppers in a couple of re-soles (often by neglect) and that insoles crumble away after repeatedly getting soaked with sweat over the years.

@@UnknownUser-rb9pd I absolutely agree! Even if you use something like Lincoln EZ cleaner and Dubbin Graise or Saphir Sole Guard on a 6 month to 12 month basis the insole will eventually rot due to salt damage. My feet sweat a lot so 7 years in a 3 day rotation is all l get. At that point unless it is something like Nick's you have to decide with the years left on the upper is it worth rebuilding? As you said as well. Most people assume with a good year welt they can do infinite resoles. For me at work I can destroy a welt if I am not careful. So sometimes 3 resoles is my max just because you can only have an welt added so many times. Sometimes I get 6 out of them but rare. Shockingly I don't usually destroy the upper on decent boots. But then again I keep an active eye on things, clean when needed, brush after each wearing and make sure they are dried first, then tree'd. I've definitely seen the end in sight but usually the footbed has cracked at that point. I completely see where you are coming from! Poron is great for a lot of people who don't need the stability that comes from sturdier materials. I get I am more of an outlier than anything. I do own a lot as well. I own Nick's, lots of Red Wing, I own a pair of Thursday's(used for cycling or errands mostly), Parkhurst, Oak Street, two Grant Stone Field Boots(I love this last), but I've owned Thorogood and Chippewa, etc. I tend to work in most of my boots and the dress boot sees seldom use due to me working Sundays and six days a week and 11+ hour days. So funerals, marriages, and the like are all I really get to pull them out for(Allen Edmonds vintage, Beckman, Williston, etc.) I absolutely agree Poron for how a lot of people wear and own their boots is more than fine. Most people don't put the time and effort into care to make anything more worthwhile. While I have a big collection overall I mostly wear an Oiled Latigo Nick's, recently one of the Grant Stone Field Boots(Doming), another Nick's, A Redwing, as my go to with usually trading out something I'm breaking in. I could probably downsize to owning 5 things that fit and be good between having things at the cobbler and what not. Plantar Fasciitis is my main issue with Poron but only when I am on my feet on concrete all day. Thanks for all your insight and I agree I'm not the normal. I think more people would benefit from 3 good boots rather than one customized Nick's as long as the last fits them well and they sized correctly. Quantity is better, until you own so much you start to shift to quality.

I have a pair of these in Horween Indigo CXL, which is simply gorgeous leather. I find myself often gravitating towards these as a daily boot for the office, fits nicely in the 'office casual' environment and offer a great colour contrast. Super comfy from day one, and seem to be well constructed, despite a single missed welt stitch in one of the boots. I agree with your opinion on them, they are a solid value for the price point.

How good is it to see another Aussie talking about boots! I have been wearing boots for over 25 years and didn't know there was such a big fuss about them. What I have learnt is that RMWs offer a certain style and fit and if that doesn't suit you, like me, well, bad luck. Also there are lots of boot companies out there that make very nice looking boots that will fall apart on you after just a year of heavy wear. (Not RMWs though - they just wouldn't fall apart no matter how hard I tried!) Then along comes Thursday Boots - good looking, hard wearing and fairly priced so that you can buy a couple of pairs to give them a rest and change up your look when you want to. I have found that all boots have built-in compromises (even Mercedes cars do!) and the guys at Thursday seem to have gotten the balance of their compromises just about right, for me at least and certainly for the price. Thank you Teik. I enjoyed watching your video. You are a man of many talents!

Hi Teik. Thanks for this and I enjoy your content! One thing I’ve noticed with a couple of my seconds pairs, is that the quarters can be misaligned. When looking straight down on your boots, this can be noticed when examining the quarters and eyelets. It appears that might be the case on your right Vanguard boot, but it’s tough to tell on video. Nothing others would notice, but I’ve found that can be a reason, versus just stitching or scuffs, etc.

Hi Teihoh! I really enjoy your posts and video's. Being new to the "boot game", I've been watching and reading everything I can get my hands on. After some consideration, I've made my first four purchases (Thursdays Captain & Presidents, Beckett Simonon and a pair of Oliver Cabell) As you can see, all are entry level quality. One subject I've not seen much on is storage. Should they be stored in the box? With boot trees or not. Is open air better? Out of direct sunlight? Should certain leathers not be stored long term next to other leathers? Just looking for a little insight. Thanks again and keep the knowledge coming.

Good video, and I agree with your review. I recently got into boots, and my first pairs were the RW 1907 Mocs and the Truman Java waxed flesh. I wanted something rough for work (office work but am out in the field regularly), but found myself babying my boots and not wanting to wear them in bad weather. I like the idea of these as factory second as a pair to just beat up. The color after conditioning them also looks really good, I like that mid brown that goes with many outfits. This might be my next boot purchase, something more more formal than what I have now. Question though, I noticed you have reviewed Truman boots. Are the vanguards narrower than the Trumans? Thanks!

I know that tough, durable boots are hard to break-in, I wear a Pacific Northwest style of Boot daily and the break-in was challenging but worth it. I really do appreciate how comfortable and well fitting they are now. How do your Vanguards compare in long term comfort and durability? I'm not interested in out-of-the-box comfort. Thanks. I sold my Vanguards in Burnt Copper because they had a real issue with stability (consequence of their narrow fit). Because the edge of my foot was so close to the edge of the actual boot, I was rolling my ankle very easily and nearly falling with alarming regularity. The rogue rock on a sidewalk was often the culprit. Mine also had a QC issue of a very tall heel (mine were factory firsts) and I had a cobbler bring it from 5 layers of stacked leather in the heel down to 3 before selling. I wanted to love them because their aesthetic was beautiful. They were my first and last Thursday boots. Should I give Thursday another shot?

If you like the profile, try Truman. They're pretty similar design, but much better build quality and finishing. They had some issues in their first couple years, but since moving to Oregon have been very solid. They are quite a bit more expensive though. Allen Edmonds' Higgins Mill is another one to consider. MSRP is about the same as Truman, but they do sale prices all the time and can easily be had for 50% off if you time it right. Part of the reason for that though I think is because like Thursday, they don't necessarily have the best QC either.
