I'm glad you did. I could tell it was the kind of book a lot of people would love, even though it wasn't my favorite

All horror is survival horror by definition. If there's nothing to lose, you're not going to be horrified. I read this is one night, he's a good writer and what I admire about this is it's a reminder that the Grimms never intended the their fairy tales to be read by children. Like Germany, Ireland was so inundated with these legends that the Catholic Church had to invent Purgatory as a way of co-opting the Irish pagans' fairyland. The professor is a complete inversion of the professors out of H. P. Lovecraft who typically stand for humanity while it's inbred hick morons who unleash the evil. In the 1970s-80s there was a whole genre of this kind of Volk faery horror out of America, but using Native American myths, the greatest example is Peter Straub's classic GHOST STORY, and in very Jungian fashion guess what... the Indian myth of these things is pretty much the same as the Irish one - in terms of what they do and are called. The third act in this surprised me

@@lauraelaineallen21 Well you might like the one he did called THE CREEPER, which I immediately read after THE WATCHERS but unfortunately it did not resonate with me. Sort of a Celtic CHILDREN OF THE CORN or maybe THE WICKER MAN. It was the exact opposite of THE WATCHERS, which I found very propulsive. At least we'll get to see if it translates into a good movie in about two months. I'll be curious to see how they pull off the creatures.

I just saw the first trailer for the movie. It looks cool, though it doesn't look like it's captured the sheer dirty discomfort of the place.

@@lauraelaineallen21 The second trailer hit yesterday, this is M. Night Shyamalan's daughter Ishana's first film so I imagine he was ALL OVER IT in the background as a dad. - you want her to have a hit. Helicopter parent the hell out of that. Yeah the teaser had what I believe was the theme from ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (apropos) playing on their old timey record player (not in novel). I dig the film trailer's visuals for the compound. That and ALIEN ROMULUS should bring some much-needed fear this summer - I really enjoyed Alvarez's other two movies: The EVIL DEAD remake and DON'T BREATHE. As you are in a big city - I feel I need to point out 1979's ALIEN will be running at your PRYTANIA MOVIE THEATER (the Canal St one I think) for a 45th anniversary re-release for a few days. You want to see that on the big screen.
