Review of the Shimano Tiagra 4400 Groupset!

Спорт

Thank you all for stopping by! I believe this may be the FIRST in depth review of the Shimano Tiagra 4400 groupset! Although I don't have the shifters from this series, the ST-R 500 shifters are pretty much the same.
Hope you enjoy and let me know if you have any experience with this groupset!

    I first bought Shimano dual pivot brakes 30 years ago and still run them - Gen 1 Ultegra 6400. I have never used the centering screw - have always just grabbed the calipers with the mounting bolt loose, squeeze, tighten. Boom - centered brake.

    Have to admit I've never quite got this gravel bike business. I'm pretty old school - 700 x 23C tyres, low rolling resistance of course, and nothing but smooth tarmac. But to each their own, it would be boring world if we all rode the same bikes!

    To be honest, my true main reason is just so I can have fatter tires to ride fast off-road! But my 87 Fuji may be able to accomplish that in the near future. Thanks for commenting and watching!

    In my experience of building up a few bikes and doing some touring, if you can fit 32mm tires on a bike you can handle broken roads and smooth gravel

    I am currently running a 2012 Tiagra/Sora mix 10 spd groupset on an old 1986 Specialized Allez and it's been working great. The brakes are no-name in black, but they've been adequate. I cold worked the rear stays to allow the use of the wider 10 speed wheelset (Reynolds Stratus Elite). I still have the original steel fork and stem, but the headset was trashed, so I installed a Profile carbon fork, threadless headset, and shim to allow the use of a 1 1/8" clamp stem. The fork I purchased in 1997 for another bike and luckily I held onto it. Bike rides fantastically.

    I have the same shimano tiagra 4400 STI shifters and it's great, it does its job and it does it well. I actually disassembled and reassembled mine twice. It took me 6 hours to do the whole thing first time so it's a real investment of time and a great test of patience. The parts inside are made out of cast aluminum and steel pawls, gears, and plates. The springs are solid and some are very stiff. I broke the spring on my right shifter maybe due to heavy use, so i made a custom spring to replace it, although its less stiff than the broken one. I managed to fix it and it's going to serve me well for the next couple of years i believe. I also add a bit of oil on the inside of the shifting mechanism from time to time to lubricate it.

    I have a bike with 4400 purchased new. 20 years of riding! Hard to believe. It has always worked very well in a utility sense. In my experience 4400 has a sloppy feel compared to say 7700. 7700 just has that precise quality feel. 4400 however tolerates being out of adjustment much more than 7700.

    I’ve only tried the downtube shifters from the 7700 series, but hopefully one day I can experience what you have with that groupset. Thanks for commenting and watching!

    I haven't bought a "new" bike since obtaining a 2004 LeMond Buenos Aires in 2005. If I were really shopping for a new bike I'd probably look for something with Tiagra - everything but Walmart level just works these days.

    That’s good to hear because there is such a great back catalog of used bikes, but the hunt is the biggest hurdle. Idk if I can ever buy a brand new bike again given my knowledge of building/working on them. Thanks for your comment!

    I just got a really cool 1986-87 Champione Del Mondo Colorado Springs Bianchi in white with red lettering - super cool bike! I’d like to make some improvements to it though, like maybe go from 25mm to 28mm wheels - is that possible?? Also I think the bottom bracket could be replaced

    Is that the Performance frame with Tange Prestige tubing?

  • @newoldsteel

    @newoldsteel

    9 ай бұрын

    It’s Tange but can’t find if it’s prestige. Problem is whenever I search “performance road bike” it doesn’t bring up the brand and just brings up a generic search for road bikes that are considered “performance”. Hence why it’s so hard to find info on the vintage brand Performance.

    I'm fanatic about long cranks and have 180mm on all my bikes. I have SRAM Rival on a few bikes, SRAM Apex on the road bike I commute with most, two Dura Ace sets and one rare set of C-Record in 180mm. 180 is not easy to find anymore.

    Advent X 1x10. I have used it on my road bike and now my "gravel" bike. My "gravel" bike is an ebay purchase of a Bianchi Strada (350.00). I have 38 tires and my 1x10 Advent X with Novatec wheelset on it. Rides great and it is Steel!

    Shimano 600 tri-color is a wonderful group set. It kind of has a cult following. The last iteration had dual pivot brakes and 8 speed sti. 7 speed versions fit old 126 spacing & down tube shifting that works as well as anything made.

    Hey guys I have a question. I have a 6 speed 1987 Trek that I recently purchased at a garage sale for dirt cheap. My question is, despite the bike being a 6 speed, would it work with Shimano 600 6400 components? I have an 8 speed rear derailleur, the front derailleur, and 8 speed down-tube shifters…all of these components have been sitting within a drawer for almost 2 years since i’ve purchased them off my brother. Figured i’d put them on the Trek but i don’t know if it’ll work.

  • @BuffsVintageBikes

    @BuffsVintageBikes

    9 ай бұрын

    The problem will be your freewheel body. The 6 speeds normally have a screw on cassette and the 8 speed has a cassette that slides onto a freewheel body so you will probably need to change the wheelset as well to an 8 speed setup.

    I recommend checking/reading Sheldon Browns website (although it’s terribly riddled with ads now) and he explains a lot of compatibility and different eras for bikes and bike parts. That’s what helped me get where I am today with bike knowledge!
