Review of FABER-CASTELL Classic Colour Pencils (Student Quality Budget range) - Video No. 105

This is a review of the Faber-Castell range of Classic Colour Pencils. These are NOT water soluble pencils. This is not a paid for endorsement. I have used these pencils for many years with students both in school and in adult classes and have found them the best quality budget pencil so far. They give a good quality of colour depth and come in an adequate colour range for the beginner. They also blend well. They are suitable for children 3 years and over to adults. In this video I talk about work I have done in the past using this range and give a demonstration of how to build up colour in layers using these pencils. I find they sharpen well and keep their point nicely (on the tin it says the leads are specially bonded to help prevent breakages). I have the professional sets of both the Faber-Castell coloured Polychromos pencils and the Faber-Castell "Albrecht Durer" Watercolour Pencil range. I have both sets in the120 size tins and these retail around the 200 pound mark, so are very pricey. This student range sells for as little as under 10 pounds on Amazon for a carton of 24 or they have a tin of 48 for 30 pounds, there's also a pack of 60 pencils 13.59 pounds! I cannot find a tin of 36 pencils but did find a tin of 48 for 27.38 pounds. They market them as "children's pencils" but don't be put off by that as they offer excellent value and quality.

Thank you Sharon for your lovely comments. I too had a long break in my art career bringing up kids. It's lovely now having time to play with art and do what I love. Art is such a wonderful relaxing therapy. I always tell people that the end product isn't important, it's the enjoyment of making art that is important. Take care and welcome to my channel. Happy Painting. Carie. X

Thank you @TmarkN for your lovely comments. It inspires me to make more videos when I get comments like yours. I really like these budget pencils. I'm going to have a go at doing a portrait using just their set of twelve pencils to see how that works. Enjoy your pencil drawing journey. Carie. X

Hi Debbie, I find them easy to blend and out of all the budget priced pencils these are the best I have found so far. A lot of the cheaper pencils have very pale colours and no matter how many layers they just do not increase in depth of colour , whereas the Faber Castell pencils are very vibrant. I also use their professional sets which have a much wider range of colours and the wood is better quality but the difference in price is huge and I think as a starter pencil these "Classic" pencils are great and you may never want to change. This is entirely my own experience and impartial opinion as I do not have any affiliation to Faber Castell. Good luck on you colouring journey. There are lots of lovely videos on You Tube to give you ideas with coloured pencils. Kirsty Partridge is particularly good and does amazing coloured pencil drawings. Thank you . Regards. Carie. x

Hi jaweriarajput4236, I haven't actually tried this but I can't see why it wouldn't work? Have a go and see and let me know. I have used coloured pencils in the past on top of dry watercolor paint to add subtle colour as in shading on portraits and to add subtle rosy cheeks. Good luck and happy painting. Carie.

I don't think so. I found them more chalky than waxy. I went to Faber-Castell's website to try and find out what they say but couldn't find any information. I find "Prismacolor" pencils to be very waxy in texture and I'm not keen on them but many people rave about them. Faber-Castell pencils are definitely my favourite over Derwent as well. And the "Classic" range are really good value. Hope this helps. Happy Painting. Carie.
