Review of Arrtx Colored Pencils | 72 Set of Arrtx Colored Pencils
In this video we take a look at the brand new colored pencils from Arrtx. I am sure most of you are familiar with the Arrtx name from products such as their alcohol markers, watercolor paints and so much more. Now they have added a new product to their art range in the form of this 72 set of Arrtx Colored Pencils.
As always to help in understanding the product on review, I have added alongside this KZread review a written review, speed drawing of the artwork I created using the Arrtx Colored Pencils and a page on The Art Gear Guide with still images of the art that allow you to enlarge and inspect in your own time. You can check out any of the above reviews by clicking the links below. If I have missed anything or you would like to ask any questions please by all means add your questions below and I will do my best to answer you, any questions I don't know the answer to I will of course contact my Arrtx contact and get the correct answer for you.

    Thank you so much Michele I really appreciate your wonderful comment. I definitely feel that my art has grown so much and I have learnt so much for a lot of you guys. A lot of the art I am creating now is the type of art that is making me really happy, when I finish it and hold it up, it makes me smile. I’m just not sure if it is good enough for other artists to buy it and hang it in their home. I don’t think I am far off selling certain pieces and using the money to help grow the channel and make it even better for you guys to use. I think at the minute I am just really focusing on getting my reviews the absolute best I can get them, with accurate information, making sure that viewers really know the product, via my reviews before handing over their hard earned money to buy a product they may or may not like or use. Thank you so much for you beautiful comment, I can’t tell you how much I truly appreciate your support and generosity, thank you.

    I think if you've used a pencil down to the base you've earned yourself the right to take it to the art store and look for a replacement in a professional range. That way you could end up being able to collect a professional set slowly and still develop your drawing skills.

    Something I noticed when you showed the swatches: the names of the colors are the same as Prismacolor. Of course there are always going to be some that are the same regardless of the brand such as black, white, cream, and even yellow ochre, but I noticed color names that are unique to Prismacolor are also used with this set. Colors like sunburst yellow, yellowed orange, goldenrod, poppy red, ginger root, etc. Other than Shortbread, I think every single color name is also the name of a Prismacolor pencil. Even using cool and warm grey 20%, 50%, and 70%. That’s something Prismacolor does. There’s no real point here. I just thought that was interesting. Great review. I always enjoy watching them.

    I think a lot of budget pencils have same-ey colours to give technically a range of colours but also options to replace used up colours within the set without having to repurchase an entirely new set since they don't always come in open stock. Arrtx doesn't, but arteza does now.

    I got those pencils. Absolutely hate the packaging. Useless box in my opinion. But cute design. They sharpen beautifully. They hold the sharp tip for long time, perfect for little details in colouring books. I was a bit disappointed with too many yellow shades but in the end I ended up using all of them. So dont mind anymore. I heard they will be available open stock thats why they have bar code on them amd they are also shoud come up with bigger set in the future. Definitely grabbing bigger set as soon as it will become available. I had an issue with lavander colour pencil, it just kept breaking when I was sharpening it. Other than that they are very nice. BTW the Faber Castell dark green 9000 pencil sharpner works amazing with this pensils. Highly recommend! Thank you for yhe review!

    Super review as usual. I love yellow and orange, but even for me there are too many golden orangey yellows, and several did not cover well. Needs more greens, dark reds and pinks. The browns are muddy and not a clear brown, the silver is great to color a candle. And the Turquoise Grey is fabulous. Good extra fun set for the money, creamy. Only one, the Peacock blue broke, but I used a cheap manual sharpener. Fun fact, if you line up the stars in your pencil case, it shows the color name at the top. Easy peasy.

    You're right about lightfast and cost; not only does it require paying for lab testing, but the pigments can be more expensive. The good news is that for artists who don't sell originals or for hobbyists, there are affordable, functional pencils. The same applies to watercolor; the best pigments and formulations are much more expensive.

  • @TheArtGearGuide

    @TheArtGearGuide

    Жыл бұрын

    Absolutely, totally agree with everything you just said. I keep trying to tell artists and hobbyists that you don’t necessarily have to use lightfast products to sell your art as well. You may not get much for an original piece but you can certainly do things like sell prints of your art. This way if you use a good printer using good archival paper and inks like giclée prints, the original art products don’t have to be hugely expensive. When I first started this channel when I reviewed a product the only things people wanted to know were if the product was lightfast and in the case of pencils, were they wax or oil. I have tried so had to dispel the myth about only wax or oil pencils, I try to talk more in terms of the core being hard or soft. People hear wax and they automatically think the pencils are going to be like Prismacolor, but the Derwent Artist pencils are referred to by many as wax based pencils and they are the hardest cored pencils I’ve used. I just don’t want artists thinking that if they want to create beautiful art they have to spend huge amounts of money or deviate from their preferred pencils just because they don’t have high enough lightfast grades. The entire lightfast system confuses me anyway. If lightfast testing was an exact science, one we all spend our money on according. Why are there two diametrically opposed lightfast ratings that don’t even compliment each other. Blue Wool and ASTM are the only two systems we should be looking at when we get so ridged about lightfastness. The problem I have with both systems, but if I had to point blame at any of them, it would be the Blue Wool system, 8 and 7 Blue Wool is supposed to be the same as LF1 ASTM. With the Blue Wool Scale, what do they mean 8 and 7? Having two numbers on one system to represent the most lightfast a product can be doesn’t make sense to me because if I am spending a lot of money on a product based on these systems, I want someone to tell me if one pigment is rated 8 and 7, how am I to know that the pigment isn’t 7, and if it is 7, how much less does it make it over an 8. I have asked this question to Chemists who work in these labs around the time I was researching wax and oil based pencils and nobody gave me the same answer and all the answers I did get were very vague. When that much doubt comes from the people creating the scales, I feel it is unfair that we as artists trying to make a living from our art, put so much fear and emphasis in buying so called highly lightfast scales. The ASTM system makes much for sense, but I think I am right in saying the Blue Wool scale historically was the first lightfast scale used. I’m not suggesting artists shouldn’t buy lightfast products, because as you said 9 times out of 10 those products will have higher quality pigments in. As a person wanting to do my very best by those who watch my channel, I feel the questions I have put forward, and they are only a few, it is my job to keep pushing until I get an answer one way or the other.

    They sound like a really nice pencil for the money Harry. I love your strawberries, good enough to eat. Nice colours, but I agree with you, an over abundance of yellows and not enough blues in the paler range. I think pencil manufacturers must all live in hot climates. They look up and see deep cerulean blue skies and think a cerulean blue pencil is all we need. They need to come and have a look at the skies we in the Northern hemisphere find ourselves looking at a lot of the time and accommodate us! I've just done a picture with Tombow Irojiten pencils and found some delightful blue/grey blue/aqua colours for the sky. Thanks for another superb review. Are you having fun in your studio still? How did it cope with the heatwave and now that it's getting damper and cooler? Is it OK as a working environment for you? Perfect to have your own space like that.

    Thanks. You answered some of my questions. Many years ago I used to do some graphite drawing (and acryl painting) and now I want to pick it up again with colored pencils. There's just so many brands and sets. I have a little budget so could buy a high end brand and large set, but I don't know yet what particular 'characteristics' will suit me best. Might blow my whole budget on a set only to discover I should have gone with a more softer pencil. Or a more [fill in the blanks] pencil. Reviews aren't very useful if you have no reference yet. What you explained about the standards and lightfastness was exactly what I needed to know. And how it relates to whether you want to draw for yourself or plan to do commissioned work and so on. I need to gain some experience but don't want to start with crappy pencils. That's my position atm. Now I feel comfortable to begin with a budget set like this one and go from there. Very helpful. Thanks!

    If I can offer a suggestion, buy a few different high end quality brands in open stock in colours you know you'll use, then you can test out whether you're going to prefer a softer core or a more solid one like a more predominantly oil-based pencil.

    Hi Harry, great review. I do love to try out different budget pencils, I am a colorist not an artist. However, if I am going to purchase a set of pencils, budget or not I want to enjoy using them. I received these pencils today and dug right in. In my opinion after a few hours of use, his set is probably one of the best I have used to date. Most of the budget pencils I have either give away to an art teach for her students, or sent them back. This set is a keeper. Great laydown, rich colors, and blends very well. Great set a pencils for a doodle session or a to color in books. Worth the purchase.

    Hullo Harry, I enjoy watching your reviews. I believe I must disagree with one of your points. Professional artworks CAN BE done with budget pencils! With the continued development of scanners and software to color correct even enhance hand drawn artworks, Professional printing services can make long lasting prints of museum quality, which in many cases are better than the original artwork! I have kept budget pencils around for nieces and nephews to create their own artworks when they visit. Nothing makes me cringe more than seeing a Prismacolor pencil being used on a coloring book page! There are plenty of similar pencils that if you buy a budget pencil and run out of a single color you can find its similar counterpart in open stock. Not for 38 cents but many around $1.00! this is one way to build up a professional grade line of pencils without going broke! OH, and Harry? I have been a working Artist for over 40 years and perhaps times are passing me bye but I do believe your Artworks are very good an you could sell prints even if you are using budget pencils to create them! You should keep the originals for your self but I see no reason if you mount them with museum quality frames, Mats, UV Glass you could sell originals! They should last a lifetime! maybe not 100 years, but then who knows who will be here then!

    That’s a fantastic idea and you are right, I did try that, but then I was left with 72 highly sharpened cores exposed which is fine for artists like myself with no young kids running a round or crazy cats jumping up on the desk to impale themselves. However the other downside to that is, if you are like me, long stringy arms which always knock things over reaching for stuff, including at the dinner table passing the salt and knocking wine glasses over, you could end up with half a dozen or more broken cores. Like I say it’s not a huge problem and I was nit picking, but you do make a good point.

  • @kevinworth3311

    @kevinworth3311

    @@TheArtGearGuide Thanks. It is also best to lay the box down flat, that way the points are not exposed upwards, and you do not have the problem of breaking the cores if you knock the box over accidentally. You should do this also if you have the pencils as they came in the box. Children use coloured pencils from an early age and are warned by the dangers of sharp objects, so using them around children this way should not be a problem if an adult is with them. Cheers Harry, thanks for replying.

    Unfortunately I can’t give a proper answer to this only because although I have reviewed Arteza Colored Pencils but it was way back when Arteza first started, I know that since then Arteza pencils have changed a couple of times and I haven’t tested or reviewed their newer batch of pencils and so I think it would be unfair of me to give an opinion on both pencils comparatively. What I can say however is that the Arrtx pencils are really very good for their price, I really enjoyed using them and they faired quite well in all the tests I completed. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help but if you check out Lindsay The Frugal Crafter, her KZread channel is called TheFrugalCrafter, you could ask her opinion because I am almost positive Lindsay has reviewed the most recent Arteza and I know she has reviewed the Arrtx. I own this box, they are not too disimilar to Prisma premier's but dont seem to break as much, they just aren't quite as pigmented, buttery and soft as Prisma's, but they're pretty good. They're actually on the cheaper end for budget-priced color pencils, but also out-perform most of them. 72 prisma premier goes for almost 100$ and no longer have a lightfast rating, they also have poor quality control at this point. I'm not saying Arrtx are fantastic, but as a Professional Artist who uses Faber-Castell Polychromos for example (150$ for 60) these are very moderately priced in comparison. Art supplies are expensive

    Hi, new subscriber here. Are these better than the brutfuner square 120 set? I want to buy a budget set and I was wondering which one is better. Thank you :)

    First of all thank you so much for your support I appreciate it so much. Regarding your question, for me personally, I preferred the Arrtx Colored Pencils but they both have their pros and cons, which depend on the style of art you enjoy creating. The obvious one to start with is the set sizes, Arrtx at the minute only sell 72 set against the Brutfuner 120 set The Square Brutfuner are a pain in the you know what to sharpen, they are fantastic sitting on your desk as the don’t roll all over the place but they are a pain to sharpen. The box the Arrtx comes in is lovely but again, to use it as storage for the pencils, is a bit of a mess about, but if you plan on keeping your pencils in a wallet or drawers or jar then you won’t have the issues I explained in the video. But the pencils themselves I preferred the Arrtx pencils over all, Color saturation, layering, blending etc. I’m not saying the Brutfuner are bad pencils, not at all, I just prefer the Arrtx over them. I hope this helps you my friend and thank you so much for your support, it really does mean so much.

    @@TheArtGearGuide Thank you so much for the reply, I really appreciate it! I'm a beginner but I wanted a decent set, I think I don't mind the smaller color variation, I just want the better pencil I can afford, right now I'm using school-grade type of coloring pencils so I think anything will be an improvement, but I still want the best option I can find. Thank you again and keep up with the great work, your reviews are my favorites :)

    I think the Arrtx is a good choice in that case. When you are a beginner, buying a huge 120 set can sometimes overwhelm new artists, they spend more time looking through the selection for the exact Color they need, at least this is the way it was for me. I think as a beginner, 12 and 24 sets are too small, anything from 36, 48, 60 or 72 are excellent starting places. What I would suggest if you can afford it is get a nice paper to use, something like a Strathmore 300 series Bristol Velum, of Clairefontaine Paint On Series Bristol Velum or Frisks Bristol Velum. It’s all the same paper I’ve just given 3 brands that are cheap and provide excellent quality paper. Bristol Velum is a nice place to start, the paper is a little bit more like thin Card but it has a nice slight texture to it. If you can buy these papers, when you get it use your school brand pencils on the paper. This will be the best way for you to see the importance of paper, you will see a huge difference in the school brand pencils, that is of course if you are using printer paper or something like that. If you are already using Velum or something like this as your surface just keep using it. Once you progress and you maybe want to go up a notch without heading for the very best pencils like Derwent Lightfast or Caran D’Ache Luminance, you could try Koh-I-Noor Polycolor or Lyra Rembrandt Polycolor, both excellent pencils and very well priced for what you get but this is later down the line. Incidentally I am running a Christmas Giveaway for a 144 set of Koh-I-Noor Polycolor, if you haven’t already done so, head to that video and just leave a comment that’s all you have to do and watch the video for details of when the winner will be announced etc. it’s totally free to take part and I pay shipping etc, you’ll see in the video what happens.

    Harry, how would you compare these with Arteza Pro pencils? From what you and others have said about them, they seem like they might be similar (or the same?). Artezas are my second favorite pencil to Prismacolors; if they're nearly the same I don't suppose it's worth me trying unless they seem different. Always looking for more quality budget pencils. Great review! Thanks!

    That wouldn’t be beyond the realms of possibility because Arteza did that with their pencils. However, Arrtx are coming out very soon with a larger set, so if the ingredients have changed reviews will notice. Also what paper are you using? This might have an impact as to why you can’t layer, mind you there would need to be something else at play to only allow one layer, that is bad and certainly not what I experienced, which you can see from the speed drawing.

    I think you are right in the sense that Prismacolor use some of the Color names as well, but those names are not exclusively Prismacolor they are just popular Color names. However, as I say, you are absolutely right in that some of the Color names by Arrtx were perhaps inspired by the Prismacolor Palette putting it politely.
