OHMYGOD HEY!
At the weekend I was invited to attend a gala performance of MRS DOUBTIFRE, the latest musical to open in the West End. The show is playing at London's Shaftesbury Theatre and stars Gabriel Vick in the role made famous by Robin Williams.
Check out today's brand new review video for my thoughts on this show's controversy, score and crowd-pleasing potential...

I just realized that & Juliet went into the theater where Mrs.Doubtfire was on Broadway, and Mrs. Doubtfire went into the theater where & Juliet was in the West End. Do you think it’s just a coincidence?

The one on Broadway is the relatively recently renamed Sondheim theater, right? I'm guessing that the people who decided on the renaming did not have in mind shows like Doubtfire and &Juliet, legacy-wise...

@@MickeyJoTheatre. In my opinion, neither Tootsie nor Mrs. Doubtfire are transphobic. Both were impressive for their time, and I am gay and incredibly pro-trans. Anyone saying these movies are anti-trans are just wrong. They might as well say Monty Python or Queen’s ‘I Want to Break Free’ video are transphobic, which is ridiculous. Maybe it’s because I’m from the USA, where one third to half or more of the population is actually transphobic. It’s so disturbing to me that people (if Republican politicians can actually be called people) can’t just leave other people alone. Between Trump and Brexit, I feel like the evil people are winning, it just makes me sad. PS. What are you and your hubby’s favorite flop musicals?

@@RLucas3000 Things tend to be a bit more nuanced than "this group of things is definitely transphobic and this group of things is definitely not transphobic." And it's definitely not up to someone who is "trans supportive" but not actually trans to decide what things harm the trans community. Also, "might as well say Monty Python is transphobic" is an interesting take considering the recent John Cleese controversy.
I saw this show in NY because I love Rob McClure. I hesitated at first because I couldn't imagine anyone but Robin Williams in the role. It's great to hear the West End production has someonoe equally as good. As for who this show is for - Rob has talked about the stage door talks and letters he has received from children. They thanked him for helping them to see divorce as something they could survive and that family could look different from what their expectations might have been.
I went to see Groundhog Day on your recommendation, and enjoyed it so much!! Now there’s a movie musical that actually uses it’s music to elevate and enforce its themes
These over choreographed curtain calls are killing me, they’re always cringe, and they give “dance, monkey, dance” energy, and having a child screaming during this one was just the icing on the cake

Got to see Mrs.Doubtfire when I was in London last week. As a huge fan of the movie and Robin Williams, I absolutely loved every minute. We saw the standby have his first performance although you would never know it!! I found out on twitter when I got back to my hotel. Total feel good stuff and the audience loved eveything minute. Just go and enjoy it. It’s so sad at times, not everything has a happy ending. But it shows you the lengths a father will go to see his own children. I loved it.
The way you describe this is the way I felt about Tootsie. That was the first and so far only musical where they’d start singing and would lose my interest. The book parts were great and hilarious but there wasn’t a single song that stuck with me even a minute after they ended.

Thank you! Went on a group trip to see it in Manchester and thought I was going mad when I was really underwhelmed by the songs and they all loved it. Your suggestions make me really imagine how much better it could have been. One thing I found jarring was the time setting. It is a very 90s story. I can see why they had to update that to address the cross-dressing for a modern audience but it felt in limbo land. The inputting numerous mobile calls, Siri, current impressions felt forced. It clashed with the famous dance scene as an old cord hoover was used and clearly a Dyson isn’t as iconic!

I've only seen clips of this show and heard some bootleg audio but I'm inclined to agree. The only song I find myself remembering is Just Pretend.
Saw it last month while it’s in its previews. I loved it so much! I thought it was heartwarming, funny and emotional towards to the end. I could potentially see Gabriel Vick picking up a Oliver award for his performance!

I was just saying this just night, he's definitely in contention, his performance is phenomenal!
Mickey, sorry for the rant, but after finishing the video thank you and I felt the same way once seeing it and there is only two songs that I remember are the kids Song and the one that is while he's cooking. Again you hit the review on the head. Great job.
I saw the Seattle try-out just before the panini. I was quite trepidatious going in and enjoyed it more than expected, largely down to the cast. Rob McClure was brilliant, with Brad Oscar and J Harrison Ghee as his brothers (in law) fellow standouts. It was a fun show, but pretty much entirely forgotten once I left the theatre. The music was bland and I haven’t ever listened to the cast recording. I feel much the same way you do, and it will be interesting to see how it fares in London!

Before the panini?
I saw this 3- 4 years ago at the 5th Ave theatre before it hit Broadway. I enjoyed it alot. It's not my favorite show, but I enjoyed it.
How you just described Mrs Doubtfire is how I would describe Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I loved it. However, the additional songs are not the most memorable... but the sets and characters more than make up for this. I definitely want to see Mrs Doubtfire...even if it's not the best musical score in the world. 💙
I went with my mum last week and we had a really good time. I'd agree the songs weren't particularly memorable but the script was funny, it was staged well and the performances were good. It's not a show I came out of the theatre with a burning desire to see again but we both had a good time. I've also never seen the movie so maybe that actually helped in this case!
Can’t remember the songs but can remember the most obscure lyric that no one else even noticed 😂😂😂😂
Saw this today as got an amazing deal on TodayTix, I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected! Though a couple of the moments you mentioned I did definitely also notice as the least effective or most jarring (the clumsy reveal - no way did that make any sense!, the cooking number, the ~comedy of the "ugly" women in the early number). The way the audience awkwardly tittered at the fanny comment was quite amusing. Had several understudies in so while they did a great job, in particular Rhys Owen was great as Daniel, it was a shame to not see a lot of the performances that you specifically called out here
An actor should be hired based on talent alone - their skin colour, size, sexual orientation, etc. shouldn't matter. There are amazing actors from all groups so why do we have people saying that talent is less important than how people look
I loved it! I thought it was hilarious but I especially liked a lot of the musical numbers.
11.58 I would also include strictly ballroom in this - a staged film where the songs sung by the cast didn’t need to be songs - live instrumentals would have been a better fit.

You're absolutely right about that one!
I wish this show had done better in NYC because I really wanted to see it. Thanks for your review!
Saw on Broadway and enjoyed!
From what I've seen & heard I agree about 98% here. This & BTTF slapped on musical to help it simply be different than the film & the songs don't really do much. (though there's at least a few from each that I actually quite enjoy) If you want to have fun & love the films though you'll likely enjoy yourself. I'm personally going to grab a ticket to the US Tour to see it next year locally & will have a blast.
I saw this in the US. I liked it and didn’t regret it, but I feel absolutely no need to see it again… if I had paid more for the tickets I probably would have been frustrated
Was unsure about this show however I took a chance and saw it last week (thanks to TodayTiks). I think you got your review spot on. I didn't have any issues with it but can easily see why it may affect others. The music doesn't add anything to the show. Also when i went to see it a few jokes didnt land with the audience. For me its Gabriel performance that sells the show (he fantastic and for me could be up for awards) also great performance by the oldest child. The quick changes & done on stage is impressive but agree the reveal at the end was poorly done. Overall the show okay (you will have a good time) if you like the film you will enjoy it, but the ticket prices especially if your going with the family (yikes).
P.S there are still reviews from the 5th Ave theatre production (pre-broadway). And some of your concerns were addressed.
As a massive BTTF musical fan, I do somewhat agree with what you’re saying about the original songs. After going with nearly double figures now, I listen to the soundtrack frequently and love them all dearly, but I can understand how someone who feels normal about a show can see they hit the mark for only a few viewings. I enjoyed Mrs DoubtFire’s Comic Relief performance but could see how that song would sound generic and lost in the audience.
@mollymcdade4031
Жыл бұрын
I adore how BTTF knows it’s a musical and gets very silly with it, but I agree a number of the original songs aren’t great as standalone songs outside of the context of the show. Gotta Start Somewhere, Only A Matter Of Time and For The Dreamers are my personal exceptions, I play them on loop
@mcflychase

@@mollymcdade4031 Haha, that’s great! Personally I listen to them all on loop, such a massive fan of the show. You kinda have to be to see as many times as I have! It has so much heart too, with so much humour. Will still try Mrs DoubtFire!
I do want to say that musically, while one can compare BTTF and doubtfire as having score problems, I think there are two major differences between them. Doubtfire, as you said, musicalizes the wrong moments a lot of the time, whereas I think BTTF did that much more effectively and does have songs that push story forward. And though some of BTTF’s songs aren’t terribly memorable, they are , I think, all good songs that have been written stylistically, with some great ones in there (Dreamers, Something about that boy) whereas the Doubtifre ones are 90% flat out bad songs. as you allude to in the videos, the only overwhelming style is that they are generic. There are one or two that are decent but there is nothing really worthy of praise in that score.

Yup - I agree with everything you've said here!
Hey Mickey-Jo! I usually agree with your reviews and criticisms. For this show I disagree with you slightly, the comedy was hilarious in my opinion, so many moments where the actors were frozen on stage waiting for the audience to stop laughing. I found the dance to be jaw-dropping, that might just be because of my dance background. I do agree slightly with your comments on the songs but to be frank (Hillard), most songs were incredible, the opening, make me a woman, Miranda’s song (I didn’t check the programme for the name), I’m rocking now, what the hell (reprise). I was shocked quite a bit by the vulgar language present though out. “Genitals”, “shit”, “piss off” etc. A young girl maybe around 9 was sat in front of me was I think a little too young to be at the show but that’s always at the discretion of the theatre and parents.
MickeyJo. . . have to tell you my son (a student of theater) is now a fan of yours. He recently saw Sweeney Todd, and I told him to find MickeyJo. He did and was amazed at your wealth of knowledge - applause to you, me & Liam ! Big Hug jojo
I am enjoying the stars! 🎉
Great review, agree with a lot of it. I'm glad they didn't make jokes out of a man being dressed as a woman, but the female roles especially the TV exec and the social worker felt very 1 dimensional & played for cheap laughs. The Prince Harry/Megan joke in the pre-show announcement felt unnecessarily mean but the whole cast was brilliant and some great dancing by the ensemble. Favourite song was 'What the Hell'. Enjoyable evening, glad I saw it but probably won't go again.

I haven’t seen the show but I heard What The Hell randomly and it’s stuck in my head as a great musical number, even without context!
I've had some very confusing conversations with British people on Twitter in which they asserted that Panto dames and drag queens have absolutely nothing in common and everyone can see the clear and obvious differences between them and that it's insulting to Panto dames to even say that they're dressed in drag, but that drag queens and trans women are basically the same thing. I think that, when people are going to use something as a weapon, it doesn't matter if it actually makes sense or not.

Have you seen the 'Greatest Days' film yet and if so could you do a review please 😢🙏
I enjoyed it when it was in Manchester. I feel it's a little unfair to put it in a group with Dirty Dancing, because that would surely include Groundhog Day? Both the Groundhog and Doubtfire films did come out in the same yesr.
How about telling the story from the kid's point of view? they really are the center of the story, then when Mrs.Doubtfires arrives the audience doesn't know it's their dad and we get to find out like everybody else. frankly, I wish this trend of setting popular films to music would end.
It a great show will see it again
Hi thought id leave a comment my daughter Angelica scotts in the show i was just checking some reviews Also amazes me how gabriel vick manages because schedule can be brutal 6 days a week as a parent its tiring
I saw it last night and really enjoyed it but I dont disagree with a lot of what you are saying here. There were moments where I was left thinking 'Hmm I would have directed/written/staged that moment slightly differently', not in an arrogant way, just my opinion from working in the industry. I also seem to remember early on Miranda sings a line about Daniel having 'ADD', which is now known as adhd, add isnt a used term anymore. But I have a little gripe with her mentioning that. Back during the days of the film, there wasnt a lot of info out in general about adhd or general mental health, so you could kind of get away with just dismissing Daniels choatic behaviours as personality flaws where he should just grow up. So in the film, while he may be Adhd coded, it isnt confirmed, so we are meant to think of him as a neurotypical person who is irresponsible. But in the show, the line about 'ADD' is just kind of a throw away, and following that, not a single character takes a single second to treat Daniel with any of the understanding and accommodations that neurodivergent people need. A lazy, feckless neurotypical who cant be bothered to get his life together, and a neurodivergent person trying desperately to get it together but mired by internal obstacles, are not the same and should not be treated the same. If you arent going to write a single character, including Daniel himself, that is going to take a second to understand Daniel's internal struggles as a neurodivergent person, dont write in a line about him being neurodivergent. It reinforces the idea that either adhd isnt really a thing or that it is something you can just choose to not impact you, like you can overcome all of the struggle by sheer will, so it doesnt really matter, and its fair for your loved ones to admonish you for your symptoms - ridiculous and damaging. That one line just really made me feel annoyed - just take it out.
it is still in America on tour
I saw the West End production. My first thought when it started was, oh shit, 2 hours left. The presentational style of acting bugged me at first but I lightened up and enjoyed it for what it was. I must say, the guy who plays Daniel had incredible stamina in a very physically demanding role. The woman who played Miranda (sorry, no free playbills) was the best one in the cast, she was phenomenal! It was nicely adapted to the stage, cleverly designed, it definitely entertained, and I couldn't imagine anyone being offended by this show, except by the tap dancing chef number...
26:00 omg :D I did not know about that. I thought about "fanny pack" like a bag you have around your belly, so I thought it meant a "wide belly" since Mrs. Doubtfire is plus size. But OMG, the British meaning is a bit disturbing in that context :D
Wasn't a fan of the movie but loved the musical. Hugely entertaining and funny. Thought the songs were fantastic. Was a great night out
I know of the character and that Robin Williams played Mrs Doubtfire in the film Not actually seen it Understand reservations on it Don’t plan on seeing the show tbh Apparently they have extended the run so I guess it’s been received well
I feel like some people will just always have something to complain about.
We saw the US touring production last week and while I'm not going to call it good, it's better than what I expected. There are moments that are downright clever, like the youtube ad interrupting Easy Peasy during Daniel's cooking tutorial. But for the most part, it relies heavily on the actor playing Daniel being able to pull it off.
Not seeing the movie in the past 10 years and just seeing the show, I have a few different takes as I wasn’t looking to check mark stuff off from the movie. I think the chef scene made sense as you got the feeling he was new to actually parenting and so he wasn’t able to cook well. The song came in at a good moment showing that he is starting to learn. The way it’s revealed to the wife that Daniel is Mrs Doubtfire I felt worked out good. You can see him start to get more drunk and he is also trying to act funny infront of the kids while showing off for the TV producer. I think it made sense for everyone to fly off as he is dancing all around and getting more wild. Maybe having the suit come off was a little strange but the wig made sense. I could keep going, like how I felt there were a lot of catchy songs (maybe not stuck in my head catchy), but I’ll stop lol
I watched it last night it was a good show good musical good actors/actresses I was 4th row seat so good poppet
I saw mrs. Doubtfire the musical in downtown Detroit it was so good and I like Broadway musical Broadway New York and Broadway us tour Detroit
Without having seen it - about the activewear section, is it possible that it's intentionally a parody of when brands say "all shapes and sizes" while only featuring models who are traditionally attractive? When you talked about it, my first thought was a parody of brands who do that, so just curious if thats a possibility (even if it's not immediately clear)
Seen in Manchester great musical version
Through throughout the last 20 years there have been place where men dressed up as women. Right now I’m in a lot of pain so I can’t remember the name of some of the musicals but what happened to the one that dressed up it was very popular when was Priscilla Queen of the Desert that was made into a musical, the other one about an aging cross dresser it was very popular, etc.. Do you mean La Cage Aux Folles?
It is a fun show
I'm surprised you didn't mention my biggest gripe with the show. They have the kids sing "What the Hell" one moment about how they want their dad and don't want Mrs. Doubtfire around. Then the next moment they love her! She's the greatest! What was the point of that song if it led to exactly 20 seconds of tension between the kids and their disguised dad
Despite your caveats I still want to see it..if only for the chorus line of multiple Mrs. Doubtfires 😂
So chill! Shall we connect?
i saw this in manchester in previews. the problem for me is it completely fails to justify its own existence; the show hits so many identical beats to the film and many of the same jokes, yet they don't land nearly as well and the fact we already know them lessens the effect. it's an odd one because i adore back to the future musical, despite it also being a near direct translation with forgettable music. i feel like whereas back to the future feels suited for theatricality, mrs doubtfire isn't which makes it feel so much more like a cash grab. that being said, the castle phenomenal, especially gabriel vick who really nailed the role.
I saw MD on broadway and enjoyed it. It is all over the place musically - disco, rap, latin genres. It is very touching and handles the theme of divorce well. Obc would have been stronger with a better miranda so I didn't enjoy her songs. Daniel's catfishing is a different issue from trans people to me.
I saw this when it is was in previews on Broadway post-COVID. I've seen the movie and I was concerned that it might not tour so I chose to see it. I agree with MickeyJo in that the show doesn't feel trans-phobic, at least from a cis-man perspective. I think there's a difference between acting vs mocking and this falls in acting. This musical was fun in the moment, definitely not in my Top 20 of all time, but ok. It's not one I would actively seek out to see again but if it comes through again, I'd go see it. It falls in the category of other movie to musical adaptations like Legally Blonde, Elf, A Christmas Story (minus Ralphie to the rescue), and Tootsie like Mickeyjo says, is fun in the moment but the music is so-so.
Easy Peasy (the tap number) just felt like a worse version of Make an Onelette from Something Rotten honestly. It doesn’t help that the 2 shows share a creative team (and Rob McClure played Nick Bottom after Brian Darcy James left)
What I’ve noticed within musical theatre recently is a lack of originality, ideas, music, story and just everything as well as a pandering towards “clicks” appealing to youth and social media.. lazy marketing and boring adaptations of any and every movie or tv show… I’m really uninspired 😢

I recently saw the School of Rock musical live for the first time. And with the exception of the band's songs that are in the movie, every time a song would start I would audibly sigh. It's so indicative of most of these movies into musicals. The songs are just things in the way of the piece. Which is so insanely sad.

"Kinky Boots" definitely doesn't overcome the issue if we only look at the writer's intention, where they want Lola to be straight and has a really shallow take on bigotry.
I saw the American one online, and it was so bad
Maybe on Broadway they did a trump joke and a Biden joke and that’s why they had two political jokes in yours? I haven’t seen it or heard the album yet but that’s my thought.
This American never thought of transphobia regarding this musical. To me, and to many of my friends, and to, I hope the theatrical community at large trans is not at all a man in a dress. A trans woman is a woman and, of course, a trans man is a man. Pure and simple.
I love Robin Williams and Sally Field in a lot of films but must say I wasn't keen on the film Mrs Doubtfire. All those lines you reference are lost on me. Much how you describe the musical I think there is an interesting story in there somewhere struggling to get out but just don't find a man in a dress particularly funny. I used to love panto but the Dame part was never my favorite part. In fact i think i am going off Panto lately. It's a bit like Mrs Brown's boys i never found that funny either.
also is it just me, or did the final song feel misplaced? i think its by far the most memorable song of the show, and it felt to me like it should have been a finale reprise of a song heard earlier rather than its first introduction!
What about the other play plane in New York went with them dressing up as women in order to protect themselves. I forgot what the name of the movie is based on I know that Tony Curtis was one of the ones that had to dress up and I forgot the name of the movie was. This one seems to be doing well, however, Mrs. Doubtfire just sounds boring.

Glad you enjoyed the show!
I saw the show twice on Broadway. It sounds like the show actually hasn’t evolved much. I walked out of the theatre baffled at the complaints about transphobia. I think the people who were upset with this show had not seen it, and based their opinions based on a handful of dated jokes from the film.
I just saw a tour of Tootsie. Was…..interesting. Perhaps one of the most forgettable musicals I have ever seen. Not to mention the second act was FAR too long.
I agree about the misogyny. I think there’s something inherently sexist in that men dressing up as women is comedic, but women dressing up as men isn’t utilized in the same way. I believe it’s because there’s something degrading about men lowering themselves to womanhood. I’m an actor and have often been a been eye rolly when directors add men dressed as women for a lazy laugh. That said, it happens way less than when I started out in 2012.
John cleves said something interesting once he said you can't not make something because they are idiots in the world of course they are going to be some people in the audience that go away with the wrong message with some transphobic message but that's not a reason to not do the show
I’m glad you brought up the diversity point because when you showed the curtain call clip, that was the FIRST thing my eye caught. A sea of non diverse faces. Unless a show is extremely specific there’s no excuse for that these days.

It’s essential that 2.5 per cent of the British population which defines themselves Black/African/Caribbean is represented by a third of the cast otherwise you’ll be whacked with the diversity stick .
I love you! Reach out to me.
I agree there is nothing transphobic about this show or the film from which it stemmed, they aren't "mocking" transgenderism in any way, Daniel dressing as Mrs Doubtfire for him is a means to an end, and the main thing I feel that is highlighted well (as well as being another driving force behind the narrative) is the insanely cruel legal system relating to custody of children, especially in the USA. When parents fight over their kids, nobody wins, least of all the kids caught up in the middle of their petty squabbling, and this show/film is a perfect display as to why "visitation rights" are of no benefit to the offspring in question, as it not only denies them quality time with one of their parents, but more often than not it creates a huge sense of animosity between the kids and their parents. Basically in the show, Daniel is a good father, but more importantly a CARING one, and the fact that the court were so dead set on denying him the opportunity to continue to be a significant part of his kids' lives in spite of him clearly not being a bad father is so cruel. This is resolved in the end, but it does highlight how the kids themselves are rarely at the forefront of decision making in these instances. With regards to the show itself, I much preferred the opening scene when it was in Manchester, they've tweaked that opening number so many times I wonder if they will ever settle on anything solid and solidify it. The rest of the show was more or less the same as in Manchester, I personally really liked it, would give it 3.5-4 stars myself, and that's largely due to the fact that a) I enjoyed the score and the musical set pieces, and b) the cast are insanely freakin' talented. Is it perfect? No of course not, it has had a highly problematic history, but the point of musical theatre IMO is to take you on a journey, whilst simultaneously providing you with a dopamine hit through the music, and I think it ticks both of those boxes. I also enjoyed that they adapted elements of the story so that it's more relevant to modern life, the use of Siri and an ipad during the cooking scene were a touch of brilliance IMO. The absolute standout scene for me though was the song using the loop machine, as I understand it he does that live every performance, which is NOT easy to do.
I would have warned you before you went. I saw the show in it's pre-B'way form in Seattle, then in NYC. Boy - what a bad show...
