Late to the party but the more the merrier...I got this back in late 2020 and I still absolutely love it. Possibly my favourite system and the era is tactically fascinating to wargame, in many ways it's even more engaging and fun to play than a more popular era such as Napoleonic, WWII, etc. This is a real 10/10 in my book. If you haven't played this, you're seriously missing out, and a system which wonderfully demonstrates the sheer breadth of combat across the Medieval period and which is far more varied than more popular eras.

I absoloutly love this game system, comparisons to GBoH are apt, but I find Men of Iron less taxing and much smoother playing. For me at least its easier to get out on the table and play. I think the simpler approach works for medieval combat, which seems (from what I have read) much more about the crash and bash of the melee, throwing men into the mix combined with deadly archery and crushing cavalry charges, Men of Iron nails that. You don't have the more complex maniple or phalanx formations of the ancient times. As acknowledged in the review its also great for solo play and can be a really interesting tool to learn about battles. I think this is one of my favourite systems and although Richard Berg has passed, I do hope the series can continue in some form, Arquebus is also great.

Your comments about the flow of battle & momentum REALLY reminds me of GBoH. I love that every scenario starts out well planned, with nice clear lines arranged on each side. Then, as the forces start to move and clash, it quickly devolves into chaos as units route, advance, rally, and falter. Awesome!

This is a Berg design, and there's clear lineage with GBoH. The main rules are not dissimilar from Simple GBoH.

@@ThePlayersAid Yeah, and to be honest I like that about it. We have a small community, for the most part everyone is nice and helpful, and we can geek out over our "stuff" without much judgment because everyone just...gets it. It's different over on the bigger Eurogaming channels. They're much more jaded because the popularity and community is reaching saturation. Whereas we're like "Another solo bombing game? Oh who cares! It's cool! Bring it on!" Or "Normandy again? So what? Mounted board this time! Cool!" "Look at all the maps in this box!" etc. Part of me selfishly wants it to stay this way.

It’s a great package and fun system! I love the possibility of further activations before it’s your opponent’s turn. Fairly straightforward game, could be a first wargame for folks. What a ton of content for the price! I would have paid more for Infidel alone when it was out of print.

As usual, great video! I already had the first game in this set from when it was released, but missed the next two. I bought the tri-pack and Arquebus(sp?) because it was still a great deal. This is a high quality game system and I wanted the whole thing. Add in the sister game Devils Horsemen and you have a wonderful tour through the changes in medieval combat over the centuries.

25:13 Ooops Horse Archers are different to normal archers, they can indeed shoot and then move (see Pg 12). They can even move - shoot - move if they wish. The most effective way to use them is to move adjacent to the target, shoot, then move away (all in one activation). This can go awry if they shoot at knights and trigger a counter-charge which they then fail to evade. I had the opposite experience to you guys with the manual. I really struggled with it. For example those Horse Archer move-shoot-move/evade rules were particularly badly written to me. Having said that I know that there's good game buried under those rules somewhere and you've inspired me to return to it and try again 👍

With Arquebus introducing gun powder it is the ugly duckling of the system (many reviewers view it as not a good match for the system at all) but this box is the culmination of the system and sits well with the GBoH series. Buy it while you can.

This may be the genre of war games I’ve been looking for. I’ve coaxed a friend into Twilight Struggle. We’ll see if I can pull him into full war gaming with me. He used to be heavy into table top miniatures so it seems like a good bet.

the MoI system is similar to GBOH, and so there are a couple of things in GBoH that I wish were also in MoI... In MoI missile units cannot fire out their flank hexes, and units cannot turn to face units coming at them from, say, the flank. And so, there can be a situation where a missile unit has a enemy unit to their front, but the enemy can move out of that frontal hex and into a flank hex to set up a better attack, and the missile unit can't do anything about. They can't fire, they can't turn. Quite aggravating, but overall MoI is a worthy system.

I was pretty interested in trying this out but it looks far more like GBoH than C&C (the latter is more my level). Rules for facing, flanking, the CRT, massive maps and tiny chits all seem a bit more than what I was hoping for.

Grant you said you may like this better than GBoH. What other games of this weight class do you prefer this to? I don’t know if it’s the presentation, but this definitely seems more in the class of GBoH, Combat Commander, Conflict of Heroes etc rather than say C&C, Undaunted or even may the Shields and Swords series.

I just got this game but when I saw the counter size there was no way I was going to attempt playing it. Any recommendations for a similar weight game in a similar era but with larger counters (like the larger half-sheet counter in the same box!)?

It is a mechanically unique set of rules from Simple GBoH, but a very similar level of complexity (or simplicity, I should say) and a very similar feel to play. Full GBoH is a bit slower and more detailed. A favourite from sheer volume and learning potential, and accessibility into this part of history for sure.

@@ThePlayersAid from an outsider they look quite similar. But I am not a hex and counter person so the more subtle nuances are lost on me. What would you say is the simplest hex and counter game to get into? I was thinking Hold the Line, Horse & Musket, or maybe the Shields & Swords series. Of course what is simple to a seasoned wargamer may be different to someone who is still in the shallow end of the pool. I was very interested in Men of Iron but after a few vids it seems like there is more to it than what it sounded like initially.
