You’ve done it again sir! I clicked on this video to learn about Igor Markevitch, of whom I know nothing, not intending to purchase any more boxes. Then the combination of your enthusiastic praise, the Beethoven overtures, and several composers that are familiar to me only in name, led me to order it. At least I didn’t pay for expedited shipping. While I’m at it your revelation, to me at least, that C.P.E. Bach was far more than just one of J.S’s sons is one of the best things to come from finding your excellent channel last fall.

His rendering of La Symphonie fantastique by Berlioz is so unbelievably stand-alone in its clarity and genius... the sound quality has not been bettered even in today's world... I could not live without it.

This is really a great box. I feel it necessary to shout out to the people who remastered the mono material in this set. It sounds really good, and falls mellifluously on the ear.

His recording of Schubert's 3rd symphony with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1954 is one of my favourites. It beats any other version I can think of.

I love Schubert s 3rd Symphony! Especially the first movement with that brilliant clarinet solo at the beginning of the allegro part!!!

I just discovered your videos, and already addicted. I love your commentary, critiques, and have gone back and found some older videos, and give a thumbs up, and ordered some on Amazon.....I will continue to watch, and may not comment, but give you a thumbs up....I grew up on classical music, played piano(from my mother, and grandmother teaching), also two brothers listen, already recommended one to watch....Thanks so much for your inciteful and important views on CDs. By the way, CDs, are now at the acme of technology(not streaming). They are of the highest quality, and lasting longer.....It is important to recognize we have about 30 years of technological advances in this medium, while data streaming is quite new, and lacking.....

I am listening to his Berlin classics Pictures right now and then the Beethoven overtures disc is coming next. Enjoy everybody!! What a set. What a label. What a conductor!

I have an earlier DG set "un veritable artiste" shamefully stuck in a cupboard so I dug it out and went straight for the consecration, Die Weihe des Hauses that is. This Beethoven overture naturally has Beethoven in its DNA but throughout it is in the style of Handel. What genius! A terrific performance too: and the Leonora III, yikes!

Hi Dave - another awesome and enlightening video. I first discovered Markevitch at my local record shop here in Buffalo when I was like 19, and it was his, for me, miraculous recording of Symphonie Fantastique with Lamoureaux. I was hooked forever and over the years i sought out every recording of his that I could find on CD. I was like a little kid on my birthday watching your review, what a marvelous conductor he was. I probably won't get the box because I already have the first cd editions of all these recordings, most of them under my pillow lol. Thank you again for highlighting this magnificent musician.

Yes! The St. Cecilia Credo does have a kinda Beatles anthem feel about it. I listened to the Markevitch on KZread and I just love it! I could listen to the Credo over and over. I have a few times already.

Have you covered the EMI Markevitch Icon box with his complete HMV/EMI recordings? It would be great to have the trifecta from you with Philips, DG, EMI though win, place and show has to be a virtual photo finish.

One minor problem.....neither Markevitch box is available on any sites I checked in USA or Europe or Britain. .....One of the boxes is listed "out of stock" on several sites. Any idea when it will be avialable for purchase ....oh yeah, one site offers it for double the list price.

TOO LATE ALREADY! Seems to be sold out everywhere in the EU, Amazon inclusive... Getting it from the UK or US is a Big No-Go, these days...

Does anyone know when this will be released? It isn't available on any of my usual buying sites.

This and the DGG set are really wonderful. Only one thing continues to disappoint me. So many of the “original jacket” editions fail to reproduce the liner notes on the revers side of the original cover. Of course the text is too small to read but simply by scanning them and then blowing them up to a decent size make them quite readable. I suspect the DGG Eloquence box which I have on order will be the same.

Tell to the guys at DG that the lack of the other Beethoven's symphonies is unforgivable!

The others are in the Philips box. He didn’t complete a cycle, because the relationship between Markevitch and the Lamoureux started well but ended badly.

@@DavesClassicalGuide Amen. I'm savoring it like a rich dessert. Your descriptions have been right on the mark, especially "The Damnation of Faust," which is as good any I've heard and maybe better. It's just too bad you didn't show the individual CDs in your presentation. That vintage cover art is the best.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get yours? It isn't due out till the 15th.

I don't think so. He's kind of a cult conductor--decent, but there's little there I would miss if it vanished forever.

His Tchaik 5 is one of the best (I have it on the two-disc Tchaikovsky set by Van Kempen that Eloquence released), so I was wondering about the rest of his output. I guess I have the answer! Thanks!

I never said it was the reference recording. hahaha. But it’s still a very lively interpretation that I like a lot, and I’ve always been willing to forgive cuts in these historical recordings, when they were more commonplace. The rest of the stuff on the Van Kempen Tchaikovsky set is no great shakes though, so I’ll take that and your reply as the indication not to pursue Van Kempen further. Meanwhile, I love how you refuse to brook any ill-considered nonsense from us, your KZread followers. You are the Professor Kingsfield of classical music. I learn things from you every day - and get a lot of laughs in the process. Thanks for your great channel and teaching!

I share your enthusiasm with Markevitch's performance of the Beethoven overtures. However, I do not think that Jochum's versions in the early 60s with the Concertgebouw are less.
