REVIEW | Jones Double Reed Oboe Reeds! (student + artist, all strengths)

Hi there oboists and oboe parents! If you've found this video, it's because you're being a smart consumer and want to learn more about the commercial reeds currently available. In this video I play and review the Jones Double Reed Oboe Reeds (both the student as well as the artist models) in each strength (medium soft, medium, and medium hard).
Thank you so much to Jones Double Reeds for sending me these reeds to try and review!
The track I'm using while I'm talking is generously provided by Scott Kramer. You can hear more of his music here: / scott-kramer-4

I find Jones reeds to be SUPER inconsistent. I used to struggle to find reeds that did my sound justice when I was around a freshman in high school. I found that KGE and Eastman reeds were more trustworthy than the Jones reeds!! Of course handmade ones are always the move. I loved this video!! Thank you for sharing! :)

What cut do you prefer French, German, or American? all my reeds are factory-made reeds and they are definitely limiting my playing

Finally found a good youtube channel dedicated to the oboe instrument wished I had watched this before I bought 2 of those jones double reeds!

I teach oboe and feel so seen watching this. hahaha! Jones are most accessible at music stores so I'm glad this video is out there so students and parents can make more informed decisions! :D

Really enjoyed this video. I have a couple of spare backup Jones reeds in my case and you have validated exactly what I was thinking of them (but wasn’t sure of prior to watching this vid because I’m no pro). Thanks for the great info. And your sense of humor had me cackling! 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks for this review, Ron. I've been playing for 3 months. It's interesting to see the percentage of reeds that need adjustment, and to see your reaction to the really hard ones (I thought it was just me who didn't want to play them when there is a lot of resistance). Like your shirt!

I knew Wendel Jones very well. He was a fine bassoonist. I still remember his performance of Rite of Spring.

As a beginner, I’m renting my oboe from a music store and it came with a Jones Med. soft reed. By this week, it just had a long crack. I had never use it on practice on the reed and the instrument.

Honestly, the red thread ones play better than the others and are cheaper. I've been known to use them for rehearsals if I just get too busy to make reeds and I have suggested them for students if I didn't happen to have any made. I get the medium hard reeds or hard so I have something there to scrape if needed.

Omg I’m so glad I found this video cause I just started playing the oboe and use the Jones student reeds. I was SO confused wondering why I was so flat and didn’t know if it was me or the reed.

Damn, that’s tough. Im a beginner that just bought this brand’s medium soft reed like a few hours ago. I wish I would’ve found this video before, but good thing I know now! I’ll have to research before buying next time haha

This was a very good and honest review. I find the recent Jones reeds to be really wide looking and super flat and not responding enough from the tip. I’ve heard some people have given them feedback and it has pissed them off lol. I think they used to be better when I was a kid honestly.

I ordered a whole bunch of reeds off Amazon and I found Jones came clearly broken where I found it unprofessional that it passed quality control. My favorite reed came from Emerald, it was just perfect and sweet sounding, but they are not consistent.
