Review - INSIDE OUT 2 (2024)

Ойын-сауық

/ moviebob1
Pixar goes back to 'Headquarters,' introducing a new crew of teen-angst themed Emotions who make life anxious for now teenage Riley and send the original gang on another personality-redefining quest. Smartly opts to not double down on sad for sad's sake merely because that was the original's stock in trade and does its own thing, resulting in a fresh movie even as the studio treads familiar ground.

@@wanderlking8634 Yeah I thought the premise was pretty fantastic, it allowed for a lot of fun comedy and character interaction. I think one of my favorites was an episode where Herman met a woman that he really liked, and at the start of the episode, it was just Lust, and the others were doing what they usually did, and try and keep him in check. But as the episode progressed, she started triggering all of his emotions positively, and they slowly started getting on board. Until the end when ALL of them were literally like quivering with repressed desire for this woman, 100% in synch with Lust that she is The One. It was just funny to watch the cut between scenes where whatever she said or did, brought another emotion on board. xD

The idea of the teen emotions being caricatures makes some sense. That emotions that are more niche are not as rich and they will just fade away over time... unless she gets a disorder so that one of them hangs around disrupting things. Anxiety for instance.

Though now Disney are pushing for Pixar to concentrate on sequels instead of new things, which is awful. Pixar takes risks, and generally those risks pay off. That some of their recent films didn't do as well as Disney wanted, partially due to pandemic and/or lack of push from Disney themselves, and partially because, well, not *every* risk will pay off. But honestly, the worst Pixar film I can think of is still above average for almost every Western animation studio out there. Disney would be better off taking the occasional loss for the overall gain of great storytelling and the occasional new franchise opportunity.

I know this seems like a nitpicky kind of thing, but when it came to the sequel and the reveal that there would be new emotions to deal with, I kept thinking how this seemingly contradicted how we went into the minds of adults and teenagers and how we didn't see their Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. My issue wasn't so much "this is a plothole" so much as they kind of shot themselves in the foot in the original movie by peeking into the minds of other people and showing that it's just like Riley's mind, only with slightly different appearances for their emotions; because I LOVE the idea of more emotions getting introduced with sequels, it's just that now they kind of need to address where everyone else's emotions aside from Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger were when we peeked into their minds. I recall seeing a trailer where Riley's Dad has his own Anxiety (whose worries are promptly ignored by the five main emotions), and all I could think of when I saw that was "oh, so the adults DO have these other emotions... where we they in the first movie?" I haven't seen Inside Out 2 and I'm sure it'll be good when I do see it, though this one aspect still nags at me even now. Hopefully it won't bother me as much when I finally do see the movie.

Yeah, that’s one of those kinds of inconsistencies that hopefully the sequel makes up for by just being really, really good. We can probably rationalize it by saying the adults we see don’t have an “anxiety” present in their heads because… they weren’t called into the office, maybe. Or maybe different people have these things on different strengths, just as we see different “primary” emotions in control at the wheel, as it were.

While the “oh actually they had an Anxiety the whole time, you just never saw them” thing does come off as a bit of an asspull, I’m wondering if any future sequels or shorts might be able to explain it. Like, if more emotions can just pop up, maybe the “headquarters” the films have had so far has to branch out and set up departments. The core five have their place at the main console but also have their own divisions that can back them up, which is why the parents’ respective Anxieties don’t show up often

I loved the visual representations of common mental health issues: a panic attack, launching difficult feelings into the back of one’s mind which eventually becomes an avalanche under the right (or wrong) circumstances, the representation of cognitive behavioral therapy rewriting the pessimism of anxiety into something useful, the list goes on. And it was important to cover how complicated emotions can become with all of their intrinsic mutual exclusivities as puberty and a need to belong start forming. It was great, and if you either have had mental health issues (especially anxiety) or have cared for someone who has (especially if you have kids who have dealt/are dealing with them), this is really a must-see.

I think especially with seeing the anxiety attack at the end. that was sort of validating or something...i don't know the right words, but it sort of felt or looked like stuff that I've sort of felt in years past and maybe sometimes now to lesser more subdued versions. but the main thing was, I liked it and I'm really happy Pixar did well with this one. ❤

Yeah for me this was probably the best non toy story Pixar sequel. I also thought they were gonna have more with Envy, lean into the whole "Comparison is the thief of Joy" conceit but what they did with Anxiety and the consequences of her endgame was a pretty strong beat to land on. Not as good or a clever as the first but a very strong outing. This felt like a return to form for Pixar.

Definitely disagree with you in thinking there shouldn't be a third movie. There absolutely should be a third one - but only if they have the guts to pull off something that's worthy of the adult experiences that high school seniors and college freshmen go through. We're talking about something that could very well garner a PG-13 rating. Truly something that discusses mental health and/or mental illness without completely sugar coating it (beyond the already established characters, of course). These films are doing a world of good for a lot of people and they shouldn't stop there.

ok, now that I think might be worth it a little. i kind of like this idea. 🤔 and i think it'd be interesting to a see a PG-13 rated Pixar movie. Obviously they'd have to get that really good Doctor team of consultants like the first movie to really figure that one out to get it right. things might not go right if not figured out properly aside from that I think I'd be happy with them doing short here and there with different pairings of the other emotions. i'm sure that would make some of the shipper fandom kind of happy. i'm not sure what they could cover or do in these, but i just thought i'd throw this out there for others to consider in the off chance they're scrolling down and seeing thoughts and stuff. 👍 but yeah, part 3. BUT ONLY...if they have a good idea that that can stand up with a really good story worth telling. um, not sure what else, but yeah. 🤷‍♂👍

EDIT: and for whatever it's worth, maybe the reason I loved the original so much is because I can *absolutely* see Riley as being one of those kids who grows up and has gauges and gets inked up and listens to a lot of MCR and A7X. Damn, it's almost like this movie was made by the same studio that released the original Toy Story when I was about three years old, then released Toy Story 3 just in time for me to go to college. Funny how that particular pipeline worked.

  • @ArthurCrane92
    @ArthurCrane9227 күн бұрын

Watched it, loved it, had my imagination captured all over again just like with the first one. The central premise of the cartoony, over-the-top antics of the emotions translating into more grounded/relatable human behavior is just as good as it was the first time. Despite "getting" all the themes and emotional beats (really love any piece of work that says "you're not perfect and that's fine, you can still love yourself) it did take several days of chewing on it for it all to really sink in. This was different to my experience with the first movie, where the big emotional scenes (Bing Bong, Riley needs Sadness, etc.) felt much more raw and immediate, which feel in tune with the simple though no less poweerful emotions at play (end of childhood, catharsis of sadness, etc.) Maybe it speaks to who I was at the time, but I was bawling my eyes out in the theater then. With the new one, the emotions are understandably more complex though no less relatable, feeling with an appropriate amount of punch to them at the time. But now that I've had the time to process my experience with it, I'm dreading a second viewing because I know now I'm gonna feel it even harder and it's gonna tear me apart. The messages of these two movies (it's ok to feel sad, accept yourself as you are) really feels like the kind of thing kids stopped hearing around the time we lost Mr Rogers and I'm grateful to have them. I know the sequalization of Pixar properties is a big concern for many, but honestly I'd be down to keep seeing more stories about RIley, or even other characters, having these big emotional breakthroughs at key moments of her life. The setup of the series makes it so that the potential for so many stories and so many different examinations of behavior/psychology are right there for the taking. We only catch glimpses of them but you really could have entire stories about mom and dad, Riley's friends, etc. in this style.

The new emotions really all are quite shallow and one note, which could maybe be a commentary on teenagers. In particular, most of what Anxiety does feels like a role that could have just been given to Fear instead. I think that would have made for a more nuanced movie, whereas introducing Anxiety as an entirely new character made it come across as a much more simple antagonist scenario.

I do think there is enough gas in the tank to do something cool and interesting for a potential Inside Out 3, like maybe this time have Riley as an older teenager or young adult (high school senior to college age). That way you could do some funny gags about the rites of passages for those age groups (such as Driver's Ed and Prom) while also exploring what newer emotions can be like. My pitch for a potential Inside Out 3: Make it an animated teen romantic comedy, essentially a Pixar take on (500) Days of Summer, and introduce two new emotions, Romance (let's say Riley has her first legitimate experience of falling in love with a high school sweetheart) and Heartbreak (let's say the first act inciting incident is she gets dumped by said sweetheart) and the whole film has Riley and the emotions in Headquarters going through the character arc of dealing with heartbreak and moving on, much like Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the aforementioned (500) Days of Summer, just in a Pixar PG-rated context. The reasons I think this could potentially work is A) if Pixar times this idea correctly to come out in tandem with the kids who grew up with the original Inside Out as one of their first film experiences, it could be a great nostalgia sequel experience, much like how the first three Toy Story films made me feel like I was growing up in tandem with Andy, B) It would be new territory and a new genre for Pixar to explore, as Pixar hasn't really done a romantic comedy before, and C) It could be very helpful for the kids who grew up in tandem with the Inside Out films and Riley who may be going through their own real-life first experiences of falling in love and heartbreak. At least, that's my basic pitch, and I'm not even part of Pixar's think tank or a screenwriter for the WGA. I know that Pixar CCO Pete Docter said there would never be an Inside Out 3, but given the serious bank this film is projected to make, well, that's what they also said about Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 5, and yet we got the former in 2019 and will be getting the latter in 2026, so if Inside Out 2 makes similar money to the original or even eclipses it and joins the coveted Billion Dollar Club, I guarantee you, Disney will be commissioning Pixar for an Inside Out 3.

i sort of agree that they shouldn't do more of these. but if they wanted to do more, I think the only way you make more of these is via short segments here and there. like how they had the Dad meeting Riley's first boyfriend after the first movie and you do it here and there for little life things of Riley in high school and stuff with other interactions and pairings with the OG emotions and the Puberty emotions. i saw in another comment section someone saying they'd want to see Fear & Anxiety do something together with him liking her thinking, at least in the early portion of the film that was being used in a promo i know they'd be different after the end of the movie, but i'd be kind of curious to see if you could do anything with those two plus i thought Embarrassment and Sadness looked cute, and she just had that look on her face that she just waned to give him a hug i'm not sure who i'd want to see Ennui paired with for antics although I'm sure she'd say "Non" to all of it. Joy seems too obvious and not really fun. maybe a Disgust or Anger doing something with Ennui could be interesting...i don't know what though

Did I miss the parts of the first one where Fear, Anger and Disgust were masterful, carefully-crafted characters? I recall that movie being the Joy/Sadness road trip while the other three mainly cracked jokes

It's odd that Anxiety isn't... well, Fear. Fear evolving as Riley ages into a teenager, gaining complexity, becoming Anxiety as they try to force themselves to think ahead and move forwards with Riley, but needing to learn that pushing the way he is isn't going to do any better than his previous, constant attempts to keep Riley safe through avoidance. The emotions look different depending on the mind, so Fear could become more Riley-coded as they go, showing that emotions can develop and evolve as we grow too, becoming more complex and sometimes taking over when they shouldn't.

Well, now we need a piece about Herman's Head. Also, I would watch Forest Gump but with the POV of the emotions. Or to put another way, someone walking through history from past to present to maybe future, but with the understanding that the main character is depressed and watching the world change and only making them feel worse.

I feel like they could do an amazing juicy take on anger as she goes to college/enters the workplace and starts to develop a social conscience. Everyone has that phase where they first really grasp how screwed the system is and how it has harmed them in personal formative ways, we’ve all known and/or been that teenage/twentysomething new gay/feminist/etc. aware person who realizes some new facet of oppression every day, and it would be pretty cool and relevant if a story could handle that admittedly-weird/cringe/annoying phase as not just something to be laughed at or condescended to by the mainstream. How valid anger needs to negotiate with despair and optimism and selfishness and fear within a developing moral being is rich ground.

Huh, I don't remember ever seeing any trailers or publicity for the first movie. The only thing I knew about it was a gif of the red guy shooting fire out of his head I saw on Twitter. Based on what I'm seeing here and a clip I recently saw... very nice to look at, colorful, lively, but I'm at least 20 years to old to really get into these kind of characters. Rentals. I saw all three seasons of Herman's Head (I was drawn to Yeardley Smith) and as sitcoms go it was good. Little too reliant on tired cliches, but the characters were always fun to watch and there were some great moments. I only recall one crossover gag ("You don't think I sound like Lisa Simpson, do you?). The weird thing was that there were at least three other shows at the time that absolutely ripped on it, including The Critic, a pot-calling-the-kettle-black situation if I've ever seen one.

I seem to be an outlier in that I thought it was the same movie with a different coat of paint. The lesson of, "don't let one thing dominate," is even the same, where I got nothing out of this that I couldn't get out of the first, but better.

That was kind of my opinion too. An emotion in Riley’s head takes the aspect they control to a toxic extent, something vital to the way Riley works is thrown out, in retrieving it an emotion has to come to terms with some of their own flaws and when the vital thing is brought back the lesson is actually that maybe it should have been discarded to allow new growth. They’re basically the same film, but I found enough to enjoy in the new one all the same

If they do a third one, and I hope they don't, I think it would be best to be about Riley's first love. All the emotions of that. The only way they should go. Now that I put that out in the universe, they will do it since we are getting a Toy Story 5 no one asked for.

Still laughing at "angst goblins"! OT: I didn't watch any PIXAR movies between 2008 (WALL-E) and 2018 ( INCREDIBLES II) because a lot of reviews emphasized "the SAD moment", and seemingly yelling at me to feel sad, and I go "You ain't the boss of my feels!" But, Bob convinced me to give Monsters U another try, and to check out Herman's Head.

13:11 - I mean, there's a pretty obvious next step which could either be good or at least entertainingly trashy depending how it's handled, involving a certain emotion conspicuous by its absence from the teenage-onset group in the film... but Disney doesn't have the guts to transition what has been up to this point a kids' franchise to something minors couldn't get into without adult accompaniment (to say nothing of the financial incentive against it).

I mean... They probably won't do it, but bringing weed, alcohol and maybe other intoxicants into the story would at least be honest and realistic, many if not most people run into those things at some point in their lives. Besides how far off would it really be, remember that LSD reference in Puppy Dog Pals in 2017? Not to mention Dumbo's pink elephants, Fantasia's dancing mushrooms and really just the whole of Alice in Wonderland.....

I actually think Inside Out could make a perfect trilogy (If they don't wait 9 years for the next one, which they likely won't if the box office remains this strong.) Have the third one feature an older Riley late in high school, give her another thematic crisis as she hits early adulthood, and then end the movie in the near-future where Riley is now grown up, so we see the same organized version of her emotions that we see in her parents and other adults. Of course, one of the only topics they haven't covered is Riley dating or her first serious romance or romances. And after Elsa, Riley is one of the characters that fans most want some sort of LGBT+ representation from. I obviously have no problem with that, but I don't know if I trust Disney to handle that.
