Review: Honeycomb Charlie Pedals

The long-awaited Charlie Rudder Pedals are available to order at long last. Spencer took a production unit for a detailed test drive to put together a comprehensive review of the rudder pedals for flight simulators.

10:15 Hey! Great review of these pedals, heres a quick tip: when in phases of flight that do not typically require braking, keep your feet lower on the pedal with the ball of your foot on the base; this way you avoid unintentional braking, and it's just a good habit to get into. A good time to have your whole foot on the pedal is during taxi, and landing roll(not necessarily approach/touchdown)

I waited the longest time for the release of these pedals to match my full honeycomb setup and eventually ended up going with the MFG Crosswind V3s and supporting mods and so glad I did. Id recommend anyone looking to pay the money for these to seriously consider the MFGs if you fly fixed wing or the VKB if you're more into rotorcraft..

@@robm78 I use the Crosswind V3 by MFG as I’m mainly fixed wing. I purchased them from my buddy who flies helis and he purchasef both the MFG and the Virpil and he preferred the Virpil for helis and MFG for fixed wing 👍🏼

"Where do you store them?" just under the desk, honestly. I haven't moved my VKB rudders even though during the day I'm working, not flying. They make for very comfortable foot rests, and give my feet something to do.

Look great for a fixed setup and good value for what you get, somewhat the same characteristics of the yoke and the throttle.

Thanks @FSElite for redoing the review, post-feedback. To prevent slippage, I would suggest trying to angle the pedals more vertical than what you tried before, such that your ankle-to-shin is at a natural 90 degree angle when resting on the pedal length. Don't worry about pressing the toe-brake at this point as the natural angle will prevent you from accidentally doing so when at a relaxed state. This angle prevents slippage and also gives you a more comfortable foot rest, well...at rest.. and might even double up as a foot stool for non-simming seated positions clicking away at excel or premier pro. Let me know how you go with this. And oh.. I don't work for honeycomb... I'm still trying to get my hands on these Charlie pedals...I'm just someone with real solo flying exposure and am trying to recreate the experience at home.

Did you get the charlie pedals yet? I ask because I'm taking lessons in a 172 and the alpha yoke is pretty close at simulating the pressures required in the real plane, but my current cheap TM pedals don't feel anything like the real pedals. So I wanted to get a perspective from someone that's flown a real plane on if the feel more realistic.

Someone might have pointed this out but there are wheel stoppers for office chairs. I got mine on Amazon. Usually, I can get away with just putting one stopper on whichever wheel. The ones I have are U-shaped and can be slid in after deciding where you want the chair to be.

Could you please do me a favor and measure the pedal width to the mm? You show these as 46cm wide and my stand has space to fit pedals 45.7cm wide. I’m hoping these will fit. I really want to get them when they are available. Thanks for the review

Just save up a little longer and get the Thrustmaster TPR peds instead. If you're wiling to pay almost 400 for something that's not much better than much cheaper peds, you'll want to spend the extra to get the most realistic on the market.

TM TPR waaay better than these. All my honeycomb products are hangered due to wear and low res (alpha). Thrust rev detents worn, bravo. Pitch/shaft axis worn on alpha with low res to boot. I am heavy user, so these products still fairly priced for consumer market.

flip flops under two chair's wheels and you'll o.k. if you lazy enough to buy new chair or change the gear with blockers. btw. blockers can become broken, flip flops never.

  • @lonewoulves

Yeah... see this is the biggest mistake simmer make when building their pits, and that is not taking into account the height of the chair to the Rudder Pedals. Your simpit chair should hold as much of the underside of your legs as possible. You should be able to sit in your simpit chair and the soul of your feet pop up off the floor about 3 inches, where now your thighs are supported. Now set the Rudder pedals out in front so to be able use just the ball of your foot to Rudder and pointing your toes to Brake. In other words you haft to get yourself up and on top of the Pedals, and the Pedals low and beneath you, like directly beneath you out in front. When you put your foot out you should be able to rest your foot or feet on your Rudder Pedals with lil to no pressure on either Axis or Brakes. In fact, if you get your chair height right, just twisting your hips will give you precise Rudder Control without over controlling. I built a platform for my chair sit on.

Hi Tom, sorry you feel that way. I can assure you that this change was entirely based on my personal discovery that I had messed up on initial review. I was using the pedals wrong, and, upon using them properly, felt very strongly that I had to correct the record.

@@sjt375 First impression is often the better end solution. Having that impression when "buying" or "testing" the product for the first time, is more than often the real impression. Going then back on that because the majority of your viewers, forum feedback or even company influence is basically a weak move. Now changing your state of mind, now that must be allowed, also shows character. But frankly this do not feel like you did, reason for that is the time period between video 1 and video 2. If by any means you did a follow up video down the road, let's say 4-5 weeks or months after, then you would have a valid and serious emphasized review or re-review. This video, not so much SJT. No offence intended but this just not smell right. It's like voting and standing by your elected representative for approximately 5 minutes and then changing your vote just because the masses tells you that you must have misunderstood the candidate. Not intended to drag politics into it, but in a way this is simply what seems to be you fell for. I base that on one particular case, how much dirt Honeycomb got on their update post, on their "fail to deliver" post and so on. And as already mentioned below, what people say on reddit, yt and website. Question is, why did you feel the urge to revisit, did you not believe in your first assumption? Take weight for an example, a very good first impression that would seriously impact any purchase.. For the most part, the novice or beginner user, would also not know about ergonomic placement etc. So in fact, this impression is valid and respected. First try, first opinion. Why then apologies to the developer? I myself is a Honeycomb user, use them every day and love it, both Alpha and Bravo and was looking forward to this addition. After viewing your initial video, I had second thoughts and still do regardless of "ergonomic" corrected first impression.
