Review | Ford Fiesta ST | Used Car Champion

We finally review the Fiesta ST supplied by a lovely owner. This review details why the Fiesta would make a great used car for someone who enjoys driving on a budget. While the larger hatchbacks like the Civic and Mazda3 would be more livable they are also more expensive.

Everybody says the FiST is a fun weekend car, but a harsh daily driver. As an owner for the last 2 years, I say the suspension not only makes commuting fun, but also keeps me awake and focused even on longer journeys. For this reason, I couldn't imagine a better daily driver. If you want to sleep behind the wheel, this is not your car. But if you're the type of person who thinks the best part of any job is getting there and back, you'll love it.

Exactly, a month ago did 1200 miles in my Fiesta ST, stock. That's genuinely my first time having a car and not wanting to put it on coilovers, because it's so good. I live in Scotland, so have lots of twisty roads, where it is just perfect how it keep its grip in tight corner even on slightly wet asphalt. Potholes in cities are really sufferable in this car, especially when whole car is so small that you can avoid most of them while still staying in your lane.

I agree. The stiff ride keeps things interesting. Wouldn't want it softer and the suspension is brilliant at the limit.

Normally I wouldn't care about ride, my previous car was a Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V and rode like it was on rocks. The only reason I got rid of it was because I've had 4 back surgeries. I don't want to give up a stick or having fun. I'm hoping this car is at least tolerable enough to run errands around town and comfortable enough on the highway.

@spamcan9208 I'm not sure if it's good after back surgeries. My back is OK, and I find the ride just nice. The seat is firm and grippy too, so you don't slide around when cornering. The only things that bother me are speed bumps and potholes, which can make you feel like half of your car just broke off if you're too fast.

I called an Uber to pick me up from the airport. An burnt amber FiST shows up, crams my luggage into the trunk, and drove approx 15 miles to a hotel. After feeling what can only be described as ejection seat bumps while riding in the back seat, I asked the driver to drive it as if I wasn’t in the car. He got increasingly more aggressive on the throttle around turns and on-ramps. I truly enjoyed the drive. But as I requested, he drove home.

Birmingham racing I only use it in snowstorms. When you NEED to get to the airport and 4 other drivers have flaked out ‘cause they can’t make it up the hill to your house, you’ll be plenty thankful for the little FiST reversing uphill to the rescue. And then getting you to your flight faster than any other driver.

@@roberthunter6433 The dog will fit fine. You can fold down the seats, too, if you need more room. I see you're thinking about one, and as an owner, I say buy it. I've had my '17 for 2 years and it makes me smile every day. The '16 and later have the newer Ford sync, and it works with Apple or Android. The later models have revised suspension that isn't quite as harsh, but they're still pretty stiff. I'm 58, and I'm fine with it. The engine and drive train are used in much bigger cars overseas, and they hold up fine. Very reliable, and I get around 30 mpg in mixed driving. Go test drive one when you get a chance, and I bet you'll want it.

No one buys a FiST for the interior. The stereo is adequate, not great. The ride is stiff, but that can be changed if it bugs you, for not too much money. Ford put all the ST (Sports Technologies) money into performance, and they nailed it. It comes with 4 wheel discs (the base Fiesta has drums in back), sport suspension and wheels, and a powerful, reliable little motor and tranny that can handle 300 horsepower out of the crate, if you want more power. It has the practicality of a 5 door econobox combined with performance that rivals sports cars in its price range, and I get around 30 mpg in mixed driving. I've driven a lot of cars, including some very high end exotics, and none of them are any more engaging than the humble FiST. It's a giggle to drive. It's the car equivalent of a fast dirt bike. It's simple and raw, and it loves to rip it up; something you don't see much in cars these days. "I spend most of my life whizzing hither and thither in exotica made from platinum and rhodium and fitted with engines that roar and bellow and spit fire. And all I want on the way home is a Ford Fiesta ST." -Jeremy Clarkson

I bought it new. I'm an old man, and the ride is a little stiff, but I can live with it. This car has a huge aftermarket, and you can change it up to suit you very easily. 16 inch wheels will soften it up, if that's an issue. If you drive this car in winter conditions, you need a set of winters, anyway. BTW, these cars can still be bought new, and they're going out the door for under 20. I've had bigger cars, but this car is a riot to drive. No other car can make you grin so much for the money. And, it gets around 30 mpg, driven casually. Money I'm not using to pollute the air is money for other things.

Bongo Dave we’re both in our elderly age, and my 2018 Fiesta ST is so much fun to drive it puts out a smile on much face. Also easy to clean compare to my F-150 truck and Boss 302. Also, where I work the parking lot is so narrow that it takes about 3 maneuvers before I can park my truck and the tail sticks out almost to the middle of the lot. This one is a zip to park and it’s just so practical and I love it!

I was blown away with this car when I drove it. Almost bought it. My coworker at the time had an 04 SVT Focus 5 door, red with black/red seats. I ended up buying the SVT Focus because it was very similar to the FiST and he sold it to me for a 1/10th of what a FiST cost. I love the hell out the Focus, its buzzy and loud but handles and drives very well. I freshened up the car with new brakes and suspension, got it tuned! Its very resistant to understeer out of the box, 7200 RPM redline, Getrag 6 speed. There is a secondary intake tube that I removed resulting in great induction noise! No need for an aftermarket intake, the engineers were clever! Such an underrated car! I may trade it for a FiST in the future. The SVTF is my reliable fun daily while I sort out my other cars. Great review as always, I have been waiting for it. Consider driving a healthy SVT Focus. Mr Geese, you may drive mine if your in the VA/NC area.

This car is the holy trifecta. It's reliable, fun and inexpensive. I've had almost every variation of platform and horsepower over the last 10 years and at the end of the day I feel most satisfied about owning the FiST. I picked up a '17 with 12k miles for $15k and have to say this has easily been the best purchase to date. I use the car daily for commuting and also for Uber/Lyft. It's so much fun to get on the throttle and whip this thing around. I've been getting some good feedback from passengers as well. My only gripes are 1. Everything has a TORX bolt or weird socket size 2. Backseat is very small but I knew that coming into it and accepted it (also this annoying cup holder in the middle of the back seat foot area) 3. Recaro seats are incredible but only for someone with a healthy BMI *I have a driver's seat Recaro but a base passenger* 4. Trunk is super tiny as well but if you take out the spare tire and hatch privacy thing you can fit a few suitcases standing up *I put a tire repair kit in place of the tire* 5. AndroidAuto is incredible compared to most OEM options and still pretty good compared to a full fledged Android head unit. Sometimes I have to reconnect it but I think that's an issue on my phone's part. 6. BRAKES ARE INSANE BOOSTED. I can't heel-toe this car because I end up going through the windshield! All in all, I LOVE THIS CAR! I really am trying to avoid the mod bug for awhile but WOW this car has some incredible potential.

Full exhaust. Short shifter of sublime. Roll reducer for the transmission, for quick launches. Shock tower bracing front and rear. Even ceramic paint protection. And 2 door being in AU. I’m 4 years in and nothing on the market interests more today. It’s so agile and the way the turbo rips to redline is unique. And the sound. Very exciting. And small and light. When I first drove this car I had to ask myself. If this was available in 2012 it would have been a tough choice between the BRZ and the $4000 Cheaper 50 pound lighter Fiesta St. I have grown to the point where I hate all things FWD. Not the Fiesta St.

When this car came out, I knew it would be my next car. Bought a '17. Cheap, reliable, fast for what it is, and you have room for stuff. One passenger will be comfy. The ones in the back, not so much, but you can do it for a short trip. I've had it for a year. No problems. I really think that in North America, these cars will be a future classic. I don't think they'll go up in value, necessarily, but used ones in good shape will hold some of their value. This is a car for the enthusiast, and a clean one that hasn't been modded to hell and back will be a hoot to whoever gets to drive it. They're rare here, kinda special, and so fun to drive. They also don't guzzle gas, which is nice, especially if you're not rich, or just don't like the idea of using a lot of fuel to get from A to B. If climate change doesn't cause a total economic collapse before then, I'll still be driving it in 20 years. I like it that much.

I'm 65 and have had a 2016 since new 35K miles. Mark really nailed this review. It's a great car and to my mind the best performance car for the money new or used. Biggest problem was yes, the harsh ride especially on bad roads. I finally swapped out just the rear shocks with Koni orange. Major improvement. It's now very livable. It is a hair less responsive but not enough for me to care. I had a Focus ST before this. It was OK but sort of felt like a Hot Rod. The FIST feels like a sports car. I'm up in Canada and run this year round. It goes great in snow with winter tires. Funky little car that has soul. I wish we could get the new 2019 version available in Europe.

This is such an amazing review, and honestly has helped me make up my mind and I’ll probably end up getting one if I can find a nice one. I can personally deal with the suspension and interior because my daily right now is a 2010 XLT F-150 so there isn’t much to the interior (that ST is actually an upgrade) and my work truck is a 2015 XL F-550 and the suspension on that truck is pretty rough too. Thank you for this review! My only concern was reliability and you’ve helped shed some light on that aspect

I'm coming up on the final months of owning my Fiesta ST. I bought it brand new in Dec 2015 (16' Kona Blue) and it's been fun every single day. The ride is definitely harsh, but it's not something that bothers me as much as it does my passengers. I've been fortunate enough to have the means to upgrade my car for the last couple years now but it's been too difficult. The shifter is so easy, the clutch is bulletproof, the steering wheel is satisfying, the exhaust(un modified) sounds cool in parking garages, and finally the pumped-in intake noise just sounds so good to me. In fact, originally I was going to buy the Focus ST (which at the time would have been a financial stretch for me) but test driving them both back to back made me realize that I hated the way the Focus sounded. In fact, I've been shopping around for months for a new car and I realize that this Fiesta has completely spoiled me. Nothing has been close to as fun as this little hatch. I'm only selling because this is the most I'll likely ever get for it. This is by far the best car I've owned and I can attribute years of grins to it. I'm so frustrated that we aren't getting the current Fiesta ST over in Europe and can only hope that we get to the point in our electric future where there's a car as fun as this one. Fiesta ST forever. P.S. Stop Tech brake pads were the best change I made to my car. They are way less sensitive and allow me to heel toe perfectly. It's always an adjustment heel toeing in other cars now because this car is so easy.

I have a 2019 FiST from the last year they made them. Your analysis like always is spot on. I can deal with the rough ride and over time I've gotten more used to it. I really don't ever think about it anymore. For the money, it absolutely rocks and I would take this any day over any Civic or Mazda3. It's just so much more fun, even if it's way behind both in interior style and comfort.

To me the interior hits the price point pretty well. I don't want a flashy interior. I want something that's easy to clean and doesn't draw any attention. The fiesta nails that. The buttons are in great places and feel fine to me. I don't ever think about them which is all that matters. Everything in a fiesta is where it should be and fades into the background when you don't need it.

It’s not that they didn’t care, the Fiesta ST is still a Fiesta. A Fiesta is a bare bones, basic economy car, they’re not going to create an entirely new interior for one specialty trim level, that would make it way too expensive to sell. People who consider these know what they’re getting, and for them it’s not a problem. I’ll almost certainly be buying one of these to replace my aging 2005 Focus ST in another year or two when it closes in on 200,000 miles, and none of its shortcomings are a problem for me at all.

  • @trentdd15

I picked up my first manual car being a Fiesta ST, not sure if it was the best first car to learn how to drive but it was very forgiving and I picked it up pretty quick and it's one hell of a little car. My friends that owned mustangs and driven high hp cars got behind the wheel of it and had an absolute blast with it. For people looking into this car that are doing deep research and possibly even being their first sports car, make sure you are aware this car has a short gear ratio, so you'll be changing gears a lot in this car. It's a lot more aggressive of a little car than what the videos can show. It's not fast though, just loud and has feels like it has a lot of torque. It's also hard to really hear how the turbo sounds in videos, but it's also loud. It has a blow off valve so you'll be whooshing every time you let go of the gas. It's an absolute blast for a car on the 9k - 15k price range, you can negotiate good prices and good deals with this car. If you're seriously wanting to own one just know it's gonna surprise you.

I’ve owned my 2015 Fiesta ST since new, and am still silly about it five years in. Yes, the ride can be intense, but so is the cornering ability. I’m fine with that. And it’s funny... when I’m enjoying the car’s performance, I don’t notice the interior much. I guess my only regret is that it’s a bit too extreme for my wife, so if we’re both going someplace we always take her Escape, which is surprisingly good to drive, fortunately. On a side note, I like a little bit of exclusivity in my cars. I had a 2010 MINI Cooper before, but when they became very common around here I traded it in on the ST. I very seldom see another Fiesta ST on the road. And if I really want to feel lonely, I drive my old MG... ;-)

Loved the review. Bought one new year & a half ago and couldn't be happier. Went in to the dealer to buy a Mustang GT & stumbled upon the FiST. Now, I know the numbers don't add up and the Mustang is twice the car in nearly every respect but, it just wasn't twice as much fun for the price. I'm 51 years old and this is my daily driver (50 mile commute). Mine however, has the base black fabric seats, not the Recaros, and at least for me are fantastic. Cheap, reliable (stock except for ceramic pads & braided stainless brake lines - yeah, it stops HARD) and makes me smile every time I drive it. Interior materials aren't as bad as SG says they are.

I've now had the car for about 4 months and absolutely love it. It's quick, agile has plenty of room for daily driving, and I personally love how hard the suspension is. I recently bought one, and I tell you what this car to me is amazing compare to your Mazda 3. To start with Mazda 3 is more comparable with Fiesta older brother Focus. I love the little rumble sound it makes and even though it's not like a neck jerker from a start, this thing can go so fast out on the highway that before you know it from 55 mph you're going over 80+ miles an hour in a second. Instrumentation is basic and simple, a plus to me. I almost got me a Mini Cooper where the driver side is like an airplane cockpit because there's so much variety of switches to deal with. It was nice in a way, but could be intimidating. But it is sweet because everything is foamy to touch and I like the wood paneling that it give a more expensive look. Mind you this come with a prize. Ford Feista ST is a very practical car, infact I used it in my farm to load four boxes of lemon & mandarin weighing about 30+ lbs and this car never complained. I love it and it's a nice addition to my Mustang Boss 302 that puts out 750hp (with Kenne Bell supercharger) and my favorite of all is the best truck in the world hands down my Ford F-150 truck. You really can't complain about a car that's being used for rally/rally cross racing and beats all these fancy European half or multi million dollar German, Italian, & German cars in any kind of racing. You don't hear that with Mazda 3 or Honda Fit, do you? Thanks you.

Have one since new, bought into the hype and didn't regret it (much). I ended up getting a set of Bilstein B6 dampers on and the ride is so much better. Lost a bit of the initial sharpness for a whole lot less gut jiggling over paint strips. The rotation is still there too. The brakes I got used to, but I had previous experience with the first gen BMW X3 and didn't think much of it during the test drive (hint: super touchy brakes too). The heel-toe thing I got a pedal cover that raises it 1/4 inch and widens it. Worked out well for me using the ball of foot, side of foot method. One warning for all though, unless you have the self control of a buddist monk, you will end up modding the car. An accessport to release the torque limiter in 1st and 2nd... then this... then that... IT'S A TRAP! :p Very enjoyable car overall.

I made it two miles before taking an on ramp and bottoming out the car smashed right into a concrete barrier, totaling it. One of the saddest days in my life. Seriously thinking of getting another one, the only negative of this car is the cheap interior. Otherwise it was at the time the best bargain “sports car” you could buy in my honest opinion especially with a simple Cobb stage one upgrade. It adds like 10-15 horsepower but loads of torque. I own one of these (I'm in my early 30s). I think the responsiveness is totally related to the "roughness". I drove it alongside a bunch of Japanese luxury sport sedans. There just was no comparison, the FiST is a lot more fun. I also didn't think the interior was that far off, tbh. A lot of luxe textures inside cars these days just look and feel cheap to me, and aren't worth paying for in my opinion.

I have a 2015 model, has been my daily driver since 2015 and I'm almost at 90,000 miles; Agree that the suspension is stiff and brakes are strong. When you get used to the brakes, it works out. The suspension, although stiff, feels great at higher speeds. I would say the only thing I would change is the audio system. Beyond this, its been a great vehicle, I get average MPG of 30 and when I need a few seconds of acceleration, it moves super quick. A great overall vehicle including it cargo carrying capability as a hatchback. Truly sad we won't see the newer model Fiesta ST in the USA, engine is smaller, only 3 cylinders, turbo and same power output.

I’d love to drive one of these. I drove a focus st a few years ago and while the power and performance capabilities were surprisingly good, it wasn’t exciting. I think the fiesta st would be a more exciting fun car to drive. -Chase

I test drove the Fiesta and Focus STs back to back on a couple of times. There is no doubt the FoST is the faster car, but the sharp handling and lightweight FiST made me fall in love immediately!

I just bought mine last Friday. Identical to the one in the video. Ricarro seats and a sun roof. I’m younger and I really don’t mind the suspension at all. Driving it is unreal fun. I love the sound system and heated seats. The seats are really comfortable. I love the breaks and the power that it has from the factory in the light platform. It doesn’t feel slow. I got mine for $17,400 with 14,000 miles and fully loaded. I have to say I’m very happy with my first new car purchase. They are known to be very reliable and the aftermarket support is awesome if you’re a gear head like myself. Everything is cheap when it comes to mods.

Just wrapping up 3 years with one of these. Heel-toe is quite a stretch compared to other cars I've driven due to the high brake pedal as you said, but it helps to have big feet so you can reach down to the gas. Downside to that is the hvac pipe for the driver's side footwell is too low, and those same big feet will kick it off from time to time. I've had to reattach it about a dozen times since 2015, so not that frequent. Also something which still bugs me that wasn't mentioned is rear visibility. Between the tiny rear window and the pudgy wing mirrors it is absolutely awful. The blind spot parts of the mirrors help, but if you want to see anything more than 10' behind the car, forget it. Overall the thing was a blast to drive and fantastic in the snow with a set of winter tires. I'm pretty fickle with cars, but I thought long and hard about keeping this one. Mango.

Heel/Toe is probably similar to the FoST. I only had mine 3 days before I lifted the gas pedal up from the bottom with a 3/8 inch shim. Guessing you could easily do the same thing with a FiST.

I'm 75 yrs old I live in Mexico with a lot of pot holes, had to change tires and wheels, because I would wreck a tire like once a month, once in a while a wheel. My wife didn't like the ride but she's gotten use to it.I travel to Texas every 6 months, having a new intercooler installed soon. I love the car!

Nice review, I bought a 2016 new, a few thoughts. 1) With the FiST and FoST everything driver related is top notch. Everything else is budget. 2) The on /off brakes you describe are with the stock pads. My fronts lasted about 25k miles, replaced with StreetHawk pads, much better feel. 3) I like the ride quality, always feel planted. 4) Be aware this is a direct injection turbo so intake valve carbon build up is a concern. Run a low NOACK oil like Pennzoil Platinum. An oil catch can is also recommended. 5) Now go out and have fun with it :)

ScubaruBanzaii When you buy the car brand new (I have a 2017) they come with a card in the owners manual packet that tells you the spring rate among other things and they softened up the springs and increased the size of the sway bar for 2017. I remember a 2016 I test drove was definitely firmer, it didn't bother me but for daily driving I feel the slightly softer springs are a nice update.

  • @DanielBrownOre

windnsea03 It was mid '16 they changed to slightly softer spring rate but with beefier torsion beam and front sway bars... Still recommend Eibach springs as only one that is actually softer but still lowered less than an inch too.

  • @DanielBrownOre

    @DanielBrownOre

It happened right in the middle of '16, so late '16's built 6/16 or later have it too... and not just the spring rate, they boosted the torsion beam thickness and front sway thickness too so it's definitely better balanced.

and you can buy lowering springs that only go a little bit lower but they are also more soft, mine still stock and its a bit bumpy but well worth it for that crazy corner bashing ability lol
