Barbie vs Ken: Who Was the Hero?

Ойын-сауық

Should you watch Barbie now if you missed it before? 9 months later I finally watched Barbie on Netflix and it wasn't what I expected...

Some say it shows both men and women's toxic behavior, another says it's like a rorschach test, where people see what they wanna see. And some have even called it a masterpiece, with it's profound meaning. Honestly, I didn't care about any of that, cuz IMO it's supposed to be about BARBIE! NOT whatever the hell Greta Gerwig is trying to say. Greta btw has ADHD, which might explain a little. Is she even a fan of Barbie? In interviews, she said she played with Barbies when all the other kids/teens had outgrown them and started drinking. Her own mother was never a fan of Barbie and discouraged her from playing with them, but she has ADHD, so naturally wants what every kid in her neighborhood is seen playing with. Her dolls all came from neighbors hand-me-downs, looking like Weird Barbie, and they all were missing shoes (which is where the whole stupid flat feet joke emanated). IMO Greta doesn't get the appeal of Barbie, she calls our lead "Stereotypical Barbie", not the 1st, original or vintage (she is shown in the opening of the movie in the classic bathing suit worn by the very first Barbie doll), I thought this was code for "Blonde Bimbo". Margot Robbie, who is also exec producer of Barbie, handpicked Greta to direct. (Big mistake!) Aaron Dinkins asks: "Is Barbie Land like an alternate reality or is it like a place where your imagination…" Everyone answers: "Yes!" The movie never really explains things and just tells and tells, which is confusing! Narrator: When you’re playing with Barbies nobody bothers to walk them down the stairs and out the door, et cetera. You just pick them up and put them where you want them to go. "You use your imagination." If that where true shouldn't they all be able to fly then? Weird Barbie: I just gave you a choice so you could feel some sense of control. SB: So there is no option one? I believe we the viewer are not given a choice in the matter. Greta Gerwig wants us to just accept it. "Hell No!" SB: Send me through the portal. WB: Okay. There’s actually no portal. It’s a figure of speech. (HUH?!!) WB: Weird, I know. Best if you don’t think about it too much. Greta doesn't want us to think about the nonsense she and her husband wrote. Wouldn't it be easier if there was a portal, like Disney's Enchanted? Narrator: And one day, the Kens will have as much power and influence in Barbie Land as women have in the Real World. Immediately after Gloria says: "No, I don’t want to. I can’t." We are never shown equality and camaraderie cuz Greta doesn't want to. Ruth: I created you so you wouldn’t have an ending. But then Barbie wants to end it by choosing to become human and die! (Why does she want this? With all the awfulness she experienced in the real world?) As everyone waves goodbye to Barbie, Ken even thanks her, she is never once shown looking back at any of them. The bitch doesn't care about them and only wants what she wants. Greta is basically saying that toys are trash and being real is the only thing that matters. Isn't this movie supposed to be promoting sales of Barbie dolls?! I wanna know the result from the gynecologist, she probably doesn't have much time to live. Stupid choice! I believe the reason Barbie treats Ken like crap is cuz her owner Gloria probably doesn't love her husband. Barbie's behavior must correlate with her owner. Barbie must think she's now in control but she isn't. Gloria designed: Irrepressible Thoughts of Death Barbie, Full Body Cellulite Barbie, and Crippling Shame Barbie. Is she serious? What is wrong with this woman who made that speech all about her? I think Gloria will use Barbie to kill her husband, so she gets the house (Dreamhouse) and every night is girls night. I know this sounds ridiculous but they do mention "The Shining" in the car.

Nailed it! I didn't really watch too much of the press junket and interviews when it was released so this is interesting to hear about. I simply watched the film, and then drew my conclusions from that. From a purely cinema and storytelling point of view there was so many gaps, unresolved threads, elements introduced that never had a payoff or later use - it was almost a series of SNL sketches more than a film at certain points. Like you point out, they instructed us to "not think about it" so that we'd just nod along with the pretty pink flashing colours and pretend it was a masterpiece because it tried to take a dump all over men which is in vogue at the moment. It's disappointing because there was some good comedy, particularly in the first half, and it wouldn't have been that hard to have this film provide a happy ending for all and not make all the Barbie characters seem like self centred vindictive harpies.
