I very well remember going to summer music school when I was 18 or so and we played an orchestration *by one of the other students* of the Intermezzo Op. 117 No. 3 in C# min. Opened my eyes to writing music for myself.

It's a shame they couldn't squeeze in Berio's orchestration of the F minor clarinet sonata (it's available on a recording conducted by Ricardo Chailly) - it works beautifully as a clarinet concerto, and is very much in keeping with Brahms's style.

A subtle boast on behalf of my former colleagues---> the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, under its chief conductor Alfonso Scarano, performed that Brahms Berio Clarinet f- sonata / concerto with Calogero Palermo, principal clarinetist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam...

I hope they do another one these as this was very enjoyable. There’s a fantastic orchestral arrangement of his two clarinet sonatas by Berio. Also, there’s an orchestration of his Handel Variations by Rubbra - not as colorful as the Berio but certainly competent and very enjoyable.

I just bought this CD, and I am looking forward to hearing it. I've loved the Brahms-Schoenberg ever since Robert Craft's first recording was the only one (stuffed into one of his 2-LP boxes of Schoenberg), and I believe I may own every recording of it ever issued. (Yes, including two issued only on LP: Andrzej Markowski on a Radio Nederland transcription, and Gustav Kuhn with RSO Stuttgart on Süddeutscher Rundfunk.) While I agree with you on the primacy of Craft I, I suggest you might enjoy Miguel Harth-Bedoya and Fort Worth SO. The finale is so exciting that I almost wonder whether Hart-Bedoya might be Roma, rather than Peruvian! Thanks for this review!

Speaking of reorchestrations, there's a new CD on the Chandos label with French Opera Overtures conducted by Neeme Jarvi (is he approaching 110? He seems to have been around forever!). The music sounds delightful. Hopefully you will review it Dave.

Excellent, I will check it out. Brahms Intermezzo is a lovely piece for piano, I'm interested to hear Black Swan for orchestra! By the way, there's nothing like an organ recital in a church or cathedral, I agree organ recordings usually leave me cold.

Great. Will give it a listen. Maybe someone has reimagined the string quartets 😴 ... yeah, I'll keep on dreaming about those works.

"Black Swan" made me really curious, so I just had a listen to it and it's very beautiful, indeed. But to be honest I really don't get the point of the title. Is it supposed to tell us anything about the music? Why not just calling it what it is? Or is it an attempt to make the music seem less "serious"? Schoenberg could have called his orchestration of the piano quartet "Fried Eggs", it would be just as random. It reminds me of the pretentious album titles you encounter these days, I just don't get it.

Not only that, but Black Swan inevitably brings to mind Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake black swan, which, as Gilbert says, has nothing to do with the case.

I would strongly advocate exploring the actual piano quartet (and its two siblings) instead of that weird Schoenberg thing (I just managed to not say travesty, and I'm mighty proud of that). It is a huge mistake to try to think of Brahms as primarily an ochestral composer. Chamber music was his forte (fortissimo, even). Keep on listening: to the originals!
