Review: 2023 Nissan Altima SR VC-Turbo - Nice, but Needs More
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I spend a week with the refreshed 2023 Nissan Altima SR VC-Turbo to see what it's like to live with Nissan's sportiest Altima. While the VC-Turbo motor does add to the fun and a new "sport-tuned" suspension firms it up slightly, the Altima doesn't go as far as it's competitors do, even though it costs as much as those sportier competitors costing $36,440 as-tested. What do you think about the Altima, would you pick it or go with the Camry TRD, Sonata N-Line or K5 GT instead? Thanks to Nissan for providing this vehicle to review.

My Platinum Vc-Turbo is 5 years old in August with 45k miles and has given me no issues besides a washer fluid sensor (under bumper-bumper). It’s been on long road trips from Tx-Va-Fl-Tx and got 36-41mpg that entire trip. For the power it puts out on 93 octane (I’ve gotten 5.4 0-60) and the gas mileage it gets Go Nissan.

beautiful color in the sun, and the new Nissans are fabulous! just got a new 23 Versa SR, love it, came with Bose, all kinds of tech.. only thing i hate is that they killed the fog lights, same on the new Altimas. why, not sure.. but for some weird reason, the Mexico and Canadian versions DO come with fog lights on SR models, and some SV's.. that really sucks. but love Nissan products. daughter has a 22 Rogue, she loves it.

There is a “sport” mode. Press the “-“ button on the shifter. You’ll see it switch to Ds.
There is a sport mode for this vehicle. On the gear selector stalk is a button just beneath the main gear selector lock. Pressing this button will toggle between Automatic and Sport mode. Automatic mode will select all of your gear ratios for you. Sport mode will hold your shifts until you Up or Down shift using the paddle shifters. If the computer in the car senses danger, it will kick in, even in Sport mode, to adjust your ratios in most cases. Engaging sport mode will automatically change the ratio points, which gives you more aggressive kick-in for accelerator pedal engagement. If you are currently in motion, you will notice upon pressing the Sport mode button that the ratio for the continuously variable transmission (CVT) decreases, which will bump up your RPMs by approximately 500. A bit of background: I owned a 1998 Nissan Maxima 5 speed, a 2004 Nissan Maxiima 6 speed, a 2015 Nissan Altima, a 2017 Nissan Altima SR, and currently a 2022 Nissan Altima SR. - Chipper Xavier.

We have the 2020 Altima sv, it’s a company car but I really like it. It’s a bit small for my taste, I drive a sequoia so I’m used to having a ton of space, but the Altima it’s pretty sporty and the interior it’s nice. I’m not a fan of the cvt transmission but it gets great gas mileage. It has over 50k miles and no issues. The heated seat do burn your butt if left for too long and the heated steering I really like. Overall it’s a nice little car. I wouldn’t buy it but since it’s free, I’ll take it!!
Sport mode is behind the shifter 7:13
I had posted this before on your review on the 2020 model you did..I Had a 16 SV i traded with 100+K miles (Reliable CVT) for a 2020 model Platinum with this Engine. Someone Rear ended me after 1 year and it was totalled. I agree about the way you have to back off cause it had irregular acceleration. I got used to it. I will Say Altimas are very very good cars if you travel alot. Thats what id recommend them for..Somone that travels this is a Top car they should look at.
6:00 into the video you mentioned the cvt issue,...I experience the same thing on my 2023 VW Taos.
Great review and very thorough content.

Thanks Matt, another great review. I will definitely give Nissan their due, they consistently make products I find appealing. Good designs, reasonably good interior spaces, usually great sounding and performing engines and nearly all of them share the same problem. CVT automatic transmission. I still have PTSD from my mom's '08 jeep patriot fwd with a Nissan cvt. that was purchased new, before most of their faults were widely known. I'm aware that Nissan has improved and refined the designs of what they make and I'm sure they are much better now, and that's awesome for the economy cars.. but I'm still pretty hesitant on a cvt with a sporty car this size and this kind of torque long term. I hope these things prove me wrong.

Have you tried the Legacy Touring XT? I haven't driven any of the new generation Legacy or Outback models, but I have driven a new crosstrek while my wife's 2022 WRX was getting a service done, and their lane keep assist is so annoying. It felt like it would try to push me off the road especially on the highway in Colorado. Glad that the wife's car is a manual and doesn't have any of that "safety tech."
Dealers are asking 40k+ for v6 Camry's. I don't have 40k.
Matt, once again fair and honest review, I don't understand the Japanese and Korean car companies offering turbo four cylinder engines with only front wheel drive with no limited slip differential, It is just stupid. Yet the non turbo four cylinder engines they offer all wheel drive, very dumb. The engine that needs the all wheel drive more are the turbo engines or at least give them a limited slip differential in the front. Oh well, I don't get it, I would never buy any of these cars without all wheel drive. Personally I loved the Mazda 6, the turbo engine is great, transmission good, great design, I almost bought one, but it was too much power for the front wheels, it needed all wheel drive. I think when Mazda does the new all wheel drive sedan with the inline 6 engine that will be a great car and that might be the car that makes me trade in my Subaru Legacy or my Suzuki Kizashi SLS, all wheel drive. I am Never trading in My nearly loaded All Wheel Drive Lincoln Continental, nope love that car on these crappy PA roads, floats on the highway, plus sadly it is the last Lincoln full size car, but Ford/Lincoln nailed it. I will say I had to rent a Nissan Altima once and they do ride well, Nissan has improved the CVT, but will never be like a torque converter automatic, but they are improving.

I wish they had the gear lever shifting options instead of just steering wheel. Have that on my older Nissan
The heated steering wheel getting scalding hot should be a plus because over time it has more wiggle room if it starts to go bad or lose heat. I agree with everything about the drivetrain though... the CVT sucks but everyone knows that by now lol.

Best sedan
Wow, nice looking vehicle.....kind of a sleeper....I personally would prefer Altima over competitors because of interior (e.g. leather), and the exterior looks. I think it might also have more leg or head room. I like the looks of the interior better than the competition. The front fascia of the Sonata is a little strange looking in my opinion, and Camry seems sort of generic and Nissan front grille I think has a modest bold expression which I prefer.
The last Altima I wanted was a 2006 SE-R which had the same 3.5 VQ35DE as the G. It was. Poor man's TL type S competitor, and although fwd biased, it was fun to drive. I have no interest in current Nissan products, especially because of the CVT.

CVT + turbo is a bed setup. The CVT can handle a strong instant surge of torque. So to counter act they they have to tune in extra turbo lag to let it build progressively. Not a fan.

It would be perfect if it had ventilated seats and double sun roof
So basically the Altima totally took over the price point of the Maxima, which started in the $30,000 range........
The last true SR Altima was the 2000s versions, if it had a manual and a returned suspension and LSD then it would be a true successor to the SR name.

69in and he's still short 😢 Also for the "disconnect" thing, what if an 50kw electric motor was attached to modulate the change in throttle input. That should smoothen acceleration and removes the guessing game.
@elenchus
Жыл бұрын
that could reduce turbo lag (although that's not generally a huge problem these days), but it couldn't help the rubberbanding of a CVT. Ultimately, people will have to choose between engine responsiveness and CVTs, although I imagine CVTs will keep improving until they are eventually all replaced with direct drive single ratio EVs
@Malficion
Жыл бұрын
@@elenchus The electric motor can be used to reduce the rubber banding as well it used as an electric brake. I'm guessing, but it seems the powerband of a turbo CVT would look like an S. The motor would boost to torque on the low end and reduce on the high end.

Motortrend ranks the Altima vc higher than a v6 Camry
@naveenthemachine
Жыл бұрын
The two also have decidedly different driving dynamics. Calling the Altima "sporty" is probably a stretch, but it's certainly more fun to drive. Its oddball variable-compression engine-a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 248 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque-works as advertised, providing V-6-like performance with four-cylinder efficiency. The engine's torquey power delivery and snarl can be addicting, but its CVT can be erratic. Sometimes it's all-conference player; others it's a nervous walk-on that doesn't want to leave the bench. The Nissan was also the better handler of the two. The Altima surprised us, but the Camry drives exactly as advertised. In other words, you'll get where you're going but forget how you got there. Toyota's 301-hp 3.5-liter V-6 is the most memorable part of the Camry; it has plenty of power and sounds sweet when accelerating, but its eight-speed automatic is unresponsive and poorly tuned. Its ride and handling balance isn't impressive; the Toyota tends to feel sloppy while cornering, as if it were tuned on a NASCAR oval. The Camry also exhibits more body roll through bends and more motion from bumps.
@naveenthemachine
Жыл бұрын
We expected some of the early rounds to be close competitions with buzzer-beating finishes. This one, however, was no nail-biter. The Nissan Altima is the better family sedan by a long shot. The Toyota Camry gives you nothing more than what you ask and nothing less. Its wallflower styling hides an unremarkable cabin that's fit for taxiing an expectant mother to the hospital but lacking the roomy back seat for bringing the new baby home. If the Camry is a car that assumes no real position in the world, the Nissan Altima is a sedan that takes a stance-you might not like what it's saying, but at least it's saying something. It certainly wants to be seen as pseudo-sporty, and it generally succeeds in that goal. It's engaging enough to make its driver feel something during another boring commute to the office, yet it offers premium appointments, comfortable seats, and plenty of space for the family.

God damit it. This is the 100th review of the car that says there is no sports mode. 🤦♂️ I just want to know how it really drives with sports mode engaged. Lol
The CVT is an automatic fail for me, pun intended! I hate the way the shifts sound, and just the general way they operate. I had a 95 Maxima 5sp that I traded my 91 Mustang GT for. That Maxima was a lot faster than the specs would indicate, and I loved dusting off the odd built Accura's, and Civic's of that time. The shifting couldn't have been better, best 5sp/clutch I've ever owned. I know Nissan can make great cars, but it seems they have gone downhill in performance, and overall driving experience. It seems this car is aimed at the sporty 60 + yo buyer of which I am one, but not even I would buy this car in this iteration. Throw a DCT, and a 300hp non turbo 6 in the mix, and Nissan would have a great car even If the cost was a few thousand more. 👍😎✌
@TaijiArban

That gen Maxima is possibly my most favorite 90s car just because of how comfortable it was and how reliable that engine is. We had one in our shop that someone abandoned due to all the dash lights and we used it for 2 years to gather parts without doing any maintenance, not even an oil change and it still ran like a champ. One of the techs adopted it a couple years ago and to my knowledge, he is still driving it.
