That was a super helpful video! Thank you. I'm considering taking my boat there and you have saved me doing hours of homework! I hope you get back to complete the last stretch!

We hope so too! It’s a lovely canal, though apparently it’s gotten a bit weedy this year! M

We've just got back from a long weekend on the Basingstoke Canal . Beautiful scenery but difficult conditions with weed and low water . The hot weather on friday was also quite something . We started at North Warmborough , stopped at Winchfield , Chuch Crookham and Asl Lock . The next day we made a dash for it , made it to the winding hole past Ash lock where we went aground before making our way back across the aquaduct and back up through the lock to Winchfield . Quite challenging for a novice when you have a hulking great widebeam , those low bridges also posed a problem , especially the double low bridge and the low bridge that had an overhanging tree behind it . Next time if I went there , I'd ask for a more lightweight , manoeverable boat after a spate of rain :)

Hah, yeah, the Basingstoke is definitely for low and maneuverable boats... the shorter the better! Glad you tried it though, lovely canal! M

@@MinimalList It's worth it , I want to go back at some point . When I pulled the boat in at The Fox and Hounds at Church Crookham , we had quite an audience who were filming us , like they had never seen a boat there before . I''m glad I didn't muck it up :) Thank you , I don't think I would have even considered going there if |I had mot seen your content :)

Old review now but just watched it and loved it. I live beside the Basingstoke (in Woking) and cycle on it to commute. And as you say counted moving barges on one hand. Shame they told you the correct way to say Pyrford wouldn't believe how long that kept me laughing. Enjoyed the video, would otherwise consider Wey which is beautiful in itself, but not the Basingstoke. Bridges dangerous enough on my bike.

Haha, we got a lot of people telling us how to pronounce Pyrford. This seems like such a long time ago but we are hoping to make it back to the Basingstoke one day so we can finally get to the end.

I really liked your trip and review of the Basingstoke canal. Ironically I lived in Basingstoke before moving to Illinois US 13 years ago. I was an avid boater back in the day having cruised many of the inland waterways of the UK, but never cruised the Basingstoke, probably because we moored at the Britannia Pub just outside of Northampton. I have recently taken to watching many Vlogs on the canals, as I am planning on retiring/semi-retiring back to England within the next year or so.

We are glad you enjoyed it. I can’t believe that was six months ago. We really loved the Basingstoke, helped by the warm weather. Retiring onto a narrowboat? Jo

Hey you guys are doing an amazing job and watching you progress on your journey is fascinating. Thank you for the review valuable to anyone doing the basingstoke. We don't have Canals here in the Cayman islands so thank you for bringing the "mother land" and it's English beauty to my eyes. I miss Englands green and pleasant lands in summer.

You're VERY lucky you didn't make it up the canal, under those low bridges, only to be stuck up there if the water level rose!

Such a shame you couldn't get past Dogmersfield. After that is the beat part. I take it that it was because of the landslide? Its been fixed now. .you Missed King Johns Castle. If you are ever this way again give me a shout. I know the areas from Brookwood to the Castle at odiham well. I can show you around. I live literally a stknea throw from the canal in Odiham. I have done videoa about the canal before. Good review :)

We have an 11kVa generator permanently connected to our diesel engine as we are a gas free boat and use electric for everything. We do have diesel fired heating as well as a multi-fuel stove, but we don't have to travel very far to charge our batteries :)

Hello Jo and Michael 3 years later I wonder whether you’ll pick up on this comment, (followed you from day one) Thank you for this helpful review, I may have the chance to do the Basingstoke next year, I have just one question. Does the lock keeper who meets you at the first lock at Woodham, then accompany you through all the following locks? Or after the initial check does he just let you get on with the rest of them? (Preferred!) Best wishes, Jim.

Hey there, you’ll love the Basingstoke! When we were there the lock keeper did not assist us through the locks, though he was incredibly helpful and gave us lots of good information, he was mainly there to close up afterwards and put sawdust down to keep leaks under control, so you’ll do all the working of the locks themselves yourself! M
