Your hair looks fantastic! It is so good to see you this wonderful holiday weekend. Keep shining bright and thank you for all you do.
I love the hat and the tidbits! The yarn is lovely
Those two skeins of yarn remind me of the yarns used to make work socks and sock monkeys 🐒 . I love the natural colors you have and would use them as is.
Many years ago, I took a wonderful Spinning and Natural Dyeing course. It inspired me to buy a spinning wheel, which I haven't used in probably 25 years, but still have. Your item on spinning is re-inspiring me to start spinning again, now that I've retired. I'll have to re-teach myself to be able to come up with even passable results. Thanks for reminding me how relaxing spinning is! Regarding the dyeing: I remember that silk fiber soaks up dye wonderfully well. It's one reason why silk became so desirable even though it's complex and expensive to produce. You will probably get a more vibrant color on your silk homespun than on the wool. The hues you get, I believe, are more related to the mordant used (mordant = a metallic salt that bonds the dye to the yarn, so it doesn't rinse right out next time it gets wet). Tin, I recall, gives a very bright color, iron gives a muted color (dying with iron was referred to as "saddening"), alum and chrome fall somewhere between. Your dye kit may have the mordant already added to the dyestuff, so you may not have to worry about that. Enjoy!
I was just now stuck on figuring out how to add on the stitches to knit upper part onto my 1898 hat band, just what I needed! Thank you
Thank you, I have had my eye on that hat for some time now and thank you for the explanation on how you tweeked the pattern.
Hi there my friend, what an interesting visit. I went to a Woolfest in Christchurch, which is my hometown and where I live now. I absolutely loved it. At first it was a little overwhelming because there was so much to see. There were 48 sites and the selection and colour was fantastic as were the site holders. These people all do their own spinning, dying and some knitting. The knowledge that they had was brilliant. I was there for about 5 hours and my head was full of confidence about what I could do with all that wool and yarn. There was no acrylic in any of the yarn but there was bamboo, yak, silk, hemp and wool. In case you cannot tell, I loved it. New Zealand is very famous for its sheep, at one stage in the late 70's we had 70 million sheep in our country. We are about 30 million now but it's only popular with a few hardy older people which is a shame. I really like the hat that you have knit for your Brother, it's cute, might give it a go, you can not have too many hats. I am pleased that you enjoyed your spinning time, my Grandmother taught me to spin although I have not done it for about 45 years and no longer have the room to be able to do it. I had a small go at it at the Woolfest on a newer wheel that is fold down and portable. I love progress, a bit. Anyhow, I shall let you on. Thank you for coming, always great to see what you have been doing. Catch you again. Take care.
I like that you have really clarified the difference between parallel floats and twisted and how they affect the end product. I think some people just thought there was only one way to do color work.
About dying the yarn, chemknits is a KZread channel. She has such good videos on dying. She has some videos where she dyes yarn that is bare, like that cream, also a yak yarn that is darker like your bfl in the same dye lots. She has great information.

Agreed! I was going to suggest Chemknits too.
Love that baby sweater!
I love the idea of the dyeing experiment on your two handspun yarns because its so interesting. BUT, the natural colors are so great that I might be tempted to use those as they are. You could do a colorwork hat & mittens set with them.

I agree with Heidi's comment about leaving the natural colored skein as-is. I love the Moorit shading that the wool comes in. I also agree with her suggestion of mittens. You could also knit a scarf alternating stripes of the colored and white wools. I look forward to seeing what you come up with, whether you dye any or all of the yarn or not.
I ordered a copy of People Knitting after seeing it on Arne & Carlos a couple of weeks ago. When I started looking at it, my first thought was that you would love it. I selfishly wanted to have another look through it before sending it to you. And now, thanks to another viewer, I can keep it for myself! 😁
I have made many 1898 Hats. It was nice to see your variation. Keep up the entertaining and informative videos.

I love your modification of the 1898 hat. I will try that on my next one. Thank you for the idea.

Hey Marie what have you been up to
Love the bfl and would love to see how the two take to dye. Beautifully spun. The book looked amazing.
Interesting episode Roxanne. You always inspire me to try new , or vintage techniques and projects. Thank you! 😊💞
I would absolutely dye them together and use them in a cowl. Dying rule of thumb is 1g dye in 100ml of water on 100g fiber. This amounts to a 1% stock solution. If the dye is stronger I use .5% Reds and Teals tend to be stronger. Chemknits is a good source of help here on KZread.
Occasionally when I need to get my hands on yarn for a meditative moment, but I don’t feel I can focus on knitting, I will grab a hank of yarn and wined it into a cake, normally I wined my yarn twice to let is relax a bit more. I bet if you dyed the yarns and made your brother a back up hat he would love it. It would be extra special since you spun and dyed the yarn.
Deepest condolences on losing your mother, and thanks for your clear instructions for working a double crown on that hat.
I love the handspun. Would love to knit with it.
Aprendi a fazer o Hat 1898 recentemente e adorei. Já fiz 6 peças e em 2 deles, fiz o Latvian Braid (usei seu vídeo). A sua dica de fazer o topo também duplo é excelente. Vou tentar fazer. Muito obrigada por compartilhar tanto conhecimento. 🙏🏼😘
Lovely to see your 1898 hat. I love this pattern and have also knitted it several times.
Brooklyn Tweed has a yarn line called tones that is similar to the dye experiment you are proposing. They use same base and color but then overdye light and dark tones.
Ticking off my Christmas list...I planned to make the 1898 hat for a couple people.... Then remembered your video to double the crown. LOVE IT!!!
That's a brilliant adaptation of the 1898 hat!
Great episode!
The baby sweater is darling!
Thanks again for an inspiring episode. Nice to watch it as i Knit your insta thought heels on my socks. I just love your spinning, looking forward to see what will happen with the dye.
I'm using the short row trick from the hat to make an intarsia design "in the round" for a sweater yoke right now. Anything to avoid seaming!
Thank you for your time doing these videos. They help a lot of people. The baby sweater is beautiful. Looking forward to seeing how the dyeing goes. You might get hooked on dyeing yarn then. 🧶🙂
🙌🙌🙌🙌, I have made several 1898 bags for several men in the family who used to have natural insulation but now DON'T😆. I love the double crown! I have doubled the yarn before but it was wanky. I can't wait to do the two layers. The air space will be a better insulation lsyer!!!!!
I love the hat! I'm thinking it would be a nice gift for a friend who lives in the Pacific North West. The book was an amazing gift. I used to save pix I'd come across of famous people knitting (or crocheting because I am bistitcheral 😉). Oh! And yarn bombed photos. I love the little cardi you made. I've made a few swear sets using a very similar pattern. A leafy yoke with garter stitch sleeves and body. I'm loving the natural colors of the yarn you spun. I'm thinking that adding a bit of color in could be amazing. Maybe as a cowl/hood type piece. The right color Green can complement just about every other color. 😉 I love your "podcasts" here on KZread. You always share lots of interesting information. Thank you so much for all the time and work you put in, it's very appreciated. Happy stitching! 💕☮️🧶
I enjoyed this Casual Fridays episode. I found the Bayuex Tapestry. Part especially interesting. The first use I made of Latin, in college, was to translate the Tapestry for myself. I started my fiber journey when I learned to embroider. Then I started hunting out different stitches. That was in the late sixties and seventies. Thank you for this episode.
As a new spinner, I haven't found it that restful yet but glad it was an aid for you! I wondered about dyeing and whether I should venture into that so will be curious about your decision and result. Love the thoughtfulness that goes into your videos, thanks.
this was such a good idea!! you did a beautiful job!! I’m sorry you had to go through losing your mother. I heard a song recently by Willie Nelson, he sang it’s not something you get over but something you get through. That helps me cause my husband died recently from Alzheimer’s and I’ve been knitting a 1898 hat. Your video caught my attention. God bless you, we will get through with His help.
I'm a hair stylist and a knitter and I'm noticing you're letting your hair grow.. it looks fantastic!!

I am too and I love the longer look. Very pretty.
Nooooooooooo, don't dye all of your BFL hand spun. Those natural hues are GEORGEOUS! Please consider making another 1898 hat with the 'marled ' grey as the ear flaps and the 'inside' being the white. This would allow you to perfect your pattern modifications. 😊 Perhaps made to fit the sister-in-law or the daughter's boyfriend. I am heartened to see your vitality has returned and that you must be feeling somewhat better. Continue on the heart healing path and best wishes for a speedy recovery for you.
BFL is one of my favorite to spin. I did a breed & color study with Wool N Spinning that was the same colors dyed on three different color bases of Shetland wool. The way the same dye shows on different colors of wool was amazing to see! Can’t wait to see how yours comes out
I've just finished knitting a Dahlia sweater for me. It's a lovely pattern
Thanks for the 1898 hat update. I knit them for the homeless in my area and the double thickness and making it reversible is genius.

I made a reversible one for our guild's service project last year, which was Hats for the Homeless. It's a really good option for cold climates.
OMG Roxanne, I agree w Kat, Kris & Fussy, your hair looks soooo pretty! I missed seeing you last Friday, but I"m glad that you took a little time off for yourself. xo Gail
I've thought of using double knitting for the crown of the 1898 hat.
In regards to the same fiber of different colors and how dyes are affected, I'd recommend a quick perusal of the Wool n' Spinning Ravelry group's Breed & Colour Study: Shetland | January - June 2021 thread. The same dye colorway was done on 3 different natural shetland bases (white, brown, and moorit) and it's very intersting to see how different they look, and what folks have done with it.
I have done similar dyeing experiments. The fun part is just doing it. I think it will turn out great. And if you don’t like it you can over dye it again. I suggest making a hat and/or mittens. Maybe colour work would be nice.
Thanks!

Welcome!
I always use duplicate stitch to hide my tails. My seamstress background dictates the difference between handmade and homemade is that handmade means invisibility of thread ends so neither the beginning nor end is discernable.
I really like the 1898 Hat pattern. Would you consider a tutorial on how you made it reversible? I'm having trouble following what you are trying to explain. I have also just knit the headband portion and then cast off making an earflap headband. Several people have asked me to make this.
@RoxanneRichardson
2 жыл бұрын
I would suggest knitting up a swatch that simulates the headband (or just knitting the headband portion of the hat), and *then* with the knitting in your hands, go through the explanation. You will likely get the visualization you need from what is in your hands.
Dr Alexandra Makin is a very good friend of mine. As my expertise is in early medieval textile production, I gave her a few ideas about dyeing and pattern transfer. We attended lectures together at Manchester University for several years.
Hi Roxanne, thanks for the great variety of topics today. I had to stop to order wool cleaner, then enjoyed all the other segments of the podcast. I watch all of your videos and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have recently knit a pieced pullover with saddle shoulders. There were no specific directions on how to assemble the pieces nor could I find any on KZread. I am hoping one day, you'll consider a technique video on that topic. Thanks.
@RoxanneRichardson

You need to consider what kind of seams you are sewing, and not so much what the garment type is. That is, you need to know the difference between sewing two horizontal edges together, two vertical edges, and a horizontal to vertical edge. I have videos on all three of those techniques in my Seaming and Joining playlist: kzread.info/head/PL1AZxTfSCe2d0qvSA86ODW6MBsD_kQR-y
This is off topic but, I like the shape of your hair today.
Knit365 on KZread has a video of wonder wool Wales which is a fibre festival he helped at recently, you will enjoy his videos if you don't already 👍🏻 it was interesting to hear about the bayeux tapestry as we have a copy in our town hall (Reading, England)
Thank you very much for the video. I especially like your explanation of the 1898 hat and how you modified the pattern. I'm thinking of using this hat pattern to make a headband-earmuffs (i.e. not knit the crown part). What edge finish would you suggest I should use on the top to bind the 2 garter selvedges together that would be stretchable? Many thanks in anticipation for your help.
I would love a tutorial of that 1898 hat I'm a newbie and need help with understanding the pattern
Just a note for anyone who wants the hat pattern. For me the link in the description is no longer working; however I just pasted the title of the pattern into google and it popped right up. Happy Knitting!

Regarding dying, there is an excellent dyer on youtube. Chemknits, she is a college graduate of chemistry. So she approaches it from the chemistry side. Another fun to watch dyer is kay jones. Her &her husband both knit, they are from the UK. They always talk about knitting but alternate the podcast theme. One she talks about & demos dying colorways, she approaches via color combos & applucations, the next podcast, he does a historical walk about of the historical countryside. Both are excellent. Oh, sometimes she mixes in a traditional UK cooking recipe. I am a knitter, novice spinner, and novice dyer. Oh, kay & dan jones pod cadt from UK is the bakery bears.

Im so sorry for your loss. I'm confused. I thought I understood row A and B it says for A, K across and B, middle 3 stitches put yarn n front and slip hose stitches. Hso every other row there are 3 slipped St. However, on the side panel it says for the middle 3 hold yarn in front, but is that for EVERY row THAT'S INCREASED IN THE HAT? (Sorry about all caps😖). Also I know he wrong side has a long stitch where 3 are slipped, but what do stitches on R side there look like? It's too bad there's not a way to do provisional cast on for the entire hat. Please don't refer me elsewhere! Thank u so much!
@RoxanneRichardson
Жыл бұрын
There's no change in how the sts are slipped, regardless of whether or not you are increasing or decreasing for the ear flaps. You always slip those center 3 sts on the WS of the work.
Thank you for link to 1898 hat. Also, I can't buy you coffee until I upload a photo, which I don't know how to do and something is missing on my wonderful iphone so I can't email a photo from my phone to my email address. Not a fan of tech. Like your videos. Will work on solving iPhone problem.
Chem knits on youtube will help you out with everything dye related.
On row 2 the pattern says *P1, S1wyib, ~~ when I slip the 1 wyib, am I supposed to be slipping the stitch knit-wise or purl-wise. Please advise. Thank you
@RoxanneRichardson
Жыл бұрын
Most likely, you want the stitch to maintain the same stitch mount it already has, so you would slip it purlwise. You typically only slip knitwise if you need to change the stitch mount in preparation for a decrease immediately after slipping it. There are also some situations in which you might slip a selvedge stitch knitwise.

The link to the pattern is down in the show notes.
I'm making the 1898 hat. I'm confused. the row where 3 St. are slipped purlwize (wrong side).Well, actually the next row that says knit across is where I'm confused. If I do that, the right sided row has those 3 stitches in knit so the right side does comes out as a purl row except for those 3 stitches. I found the pattern on the Seafarers (?) site and it definitely says knit across with yarn in back, nothing about bringing the yarn in front for those 3 stitches. What am I doing wrong. I'm sooo frustrated!! Please someone, HELP!!
@RoxanneRichardson
Жыл бұрын
You don’t have to bring the yarn to the front to slip because when you are purling across, that’s when you slip the stitches and the yarn is already in front. On the right side rows you just are knitting straight across. You don’t slip on every row
I'm sure I'm missing something easy; can you please help me find the written Reversible Road Trip Hat pattern?j Thank you.
