I sat up and played all night with the Rev. after a concert, I was a concert promoter for the Seattle Folklore Society and got to meet all the great bluesmen, for which I feel eternally blessed. If you like the Rev. there's all kinds of stuff on youtube. He was a moving and powerful performer, just as down to earth as an old shoe.

Yeah, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu Whoa, glory how happy I am Oh, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu When I could not understand Jesus, he give me a lending hand Led me away to the promised land Glory, hallelu Oh, well he give me a horn and he told me to blow Go in peace and sin no more He led me away to the upright shore Glory, hallelu Whoa, glory how happy I Yes! My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu Well, glory Yeah! My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu I know something that's mighty swell A sweet little story I love to tell Jesus saved my soul from Hell Glory, hallelu Oh, stand back Satan, get out of my way I don't want to hear not a word you say I'm on my way to the King's highway Glory, hallelu Well thank God I got over at last Thank God I got over at last My feet is planted in the narrow path Glory, hallelu Whoa, glory how happy I am Whoa, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu When I had no home to claim I begin to call on Jesus' name He saved me from old Satan's chains Glory, hallelu Now I'm fire-baptized and holy ghost-filled I'm out here to do my master's will I must keep going, I must keep Glory, hallelu Well, glory Whoa, glory how happy I am My soul is washed in the blood of the lamb Glory, hallelu Yeah, glory how Yeah! Less Is More, that's for sure: Voice + fingers, no more needed. A beautiful melody energized by spellbinding guitar work and delivered with genuine passion. Timeless. Name-drop Opportunity: The Rev. Gary Davis played at Elliot's Books in New Haven, CT in the early Sixties (long enough ago that smoking was still allowed -- even in a book store. I was fortunate to get a 2nd-row seat, and even more fortunate to eavesdrop on the Reverend, taking his break directly in front of me with his wife, being softly but intensely lectured about his indoor cigar smoking---possibly not for the first time =:^)---and his short, gruff replies. It was nice to get a glimpse of everyday life from someone I regarded as a musical icon and still do.

When I decided to learn guitar 30 years ago, a Stefan Grosman tab book by the Reverend Gary Davis was all they had in the library by way of tuition. In an interview Stefan asked him why he only played with his thumb and forefinger and not his other fingers and Davis said something along the lines of, that's all you need, the others get in the way. I thought that sounded pretty logical and 30 years on I still agree with him. I can't recall anyone else just using the thumb and forefinger only, so basically that interview shaped the whole of my playing during that time. Great to see him in this, one of his best. :)

Anyone who was a fan of the Rainbow Quest TV show knows that it was like a kitchen party; a kitchen table with a pot of coffee and anyone was welcome to join in. If you made a mistake, there were no do-overs, it stayed there. Two cameras and one mic.

Shawn Phillips is the individual sitting next to the equally awestruck Donovan Leitch. This was recorded in 1967.

Reminds me of the Bob Dylan film "Don't Look Back" where Donovan came across as a lost little boy. Maybe that was just the default persona for Donovan at the time.

A very Young Donovan in the background and the Eternal Ham Seeger trying to steal the shot. Took him most of the vid to figure out key. Reverend Davis was the best!

@@sunbrosolaire3952 It is later than that. Donovan Leitch is on here, so it is several years after that. This was from a 1967 episode of "Rainbow Quest," which Seeger hosted.
