Revenge On X-Play! Castle of Shikigami Review

Ойындар

Revenge On X-Play! Castle of Shikigami Review. Long ago Castle of Shikigami (Mobile Light Force 2) received a 1/5 score on X-Play. What is interesting about this review is that even though X-Play were clearly a trash TV show with joke reviews, this score seems to have stuck to the game's reputation, at least on wikipedia. What I find particularly interesting about the X-Play review, is that the show never seemed the need to explain why the score was so low, other than the graphics, being "Japanese" and the notorious "lasting only 30 minutes." A lot of these critiques could, of course, apply the genre of shmups generally. I think it was a classic case of judging a game by its cover, due to the silly western Mobile Light Force 2 cover that seemed to by trying to trick the player into thinking they were buying an action game.
Overall, Shikigami is a very unique and interesting bullet-hell (danmaku) shmup. It is possibly the first shoot em' up to have a visible hitbox and it clearly was an inspiration for the Touhou series. What sets Shiki apart is it's aggressive grazing and speedkilling scoring system (outside of some crazy boss milking of course). The goal of today's review is to take a fair look at this game and point out what I think are it's strengths, and also it's weaknesses that I hope are improved upon in the later games in the series.
As of right now the game is available on Steam, but beware the steam port (while decent performance wise) does seem a bit buggy. Also it sadly doesn't have the delightful voice acting that we see in Shikigami 2. Shiki 1 is also available on PS2 under the title "Mobile Light Force 2."

    Any review that bashes X-Play is a good time for me! It's so sad because on Tech TV it was called "Extended Play" and was actually a good show. But when it became X-Play it became complete trash. Hated it since episode 1 and that hatred burns eternal in my heart. I said back when NAVGTR/Gaming in the Clinton Years/Flights of Fantasy was discovered and everyone was mocking them that "this is how X-Play will be looked at in another decade or two". Welp! The first game in the series is good, but it does have a bit of an identity crisis compared to the next two games. Sometimes, it's throwing Psikyo style sniper shots and at other times, it's Touhou style patterns. Also, the grazing is not as refined as it is in Castle Shikigami 2. The boss battle are really cool like you said and it still has enough going for it to be worth playing. Castle Shikigami 2 is phenomenal. The grazing is a lot more refined, there are even more characters along with an alternate shikigami attack for each character, and even the graphics and music are much better. The level design also encourages a lot more grazing. It pushes you in that direction more than Shiki 1. You need to do it in order to get extends and more bombs. Also, I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that getting hit gives you a bomb in these games. Some people will take a hit very early on in these games to get an extra bomb, with hardly any impact to your score if done early enough.

    I was introduced to the series through Sisters Royale (fans call it the 4th entry). The 1st one is a bit rough around the edges, but for sure the 2nd one is where it's at. For sure the main appeal is all the different characters and their abilities. But the gameplay highlight is definitely grazing for score as it's so much more fun getting high multipliers, lots of COINS, and stronger shots! I blame it for the reason why I can't 1CC because I get too greedy! The only thing I don't like about series is how long you can milk the bosses. I get too bored for that and then my score isn't as high! And yes I like playing as Reimu 😁

    Based on your review (and like what others said in the comments too), you'll likely enjoy the sequels more. Visuals are cleaner, general enemy design is more streamlined (though 1 has plenty of unique-looking popcorn enemy types, all based on the bosses themselves), and if you liked the bosses here, some of the fights will feel even more creative. The complaints about the invisible screen edges are very fair (and sadly the later games still have it and I also don't like it much lol) but CAVE and Touhou games (and tons of other shmups to my dismay) also have them, as there is a small space on the bottom where you can't put your hitbox. It is a much smaller gap in CAVE/Touhou than Shiki to be fair, but on the upside you aren't pushed to the bottom of the screen as often in Shiki games due to the grazing and point-blanking focus. As for the lack of scoring incentives, I am not so sure about that. In certain aspects you are right (like the very generous timer not putting any pressure), but on the other hand, scoring is pushed with the coin autocollection on shikigami use (and higher coin count depending on grazing) combined with the Every X extends. It is NOT a one-extend game, you have the first one at 150mil, then every 300mil. Extends also give one bomb. Kuga's inclusion in itself is also a way to encourage people into scoring since he is easier to score with even though the interactions and score ceiling are more limited. I'd say DDP has an actually much much worse disconnect between survival and scoring, and you don't see survival play trying to integrate any kind of chaining in it. It's not necessarily a problem in itself IMO, but if it is an issue for you in Shiki then it is true for DDP too. Though I imagine the more streamlined survival challenge in DDP may alleviate that a bit. In any case I'm glad you enjoyed the character variety and found some sort of "main", that's a very cool aspect of the series! I'm curious to see what you'll think of the sequels whenever you get to them. And thanks for reviewing the game!

  • @TheElectricUnderground

    @TheElectricUnderground

    On the point of the scoring/survival incentive, this is where I am going to very heavily disagree with a lot of the more hardcore players when it comes to game critique. Because in my view, the base survival gameplay is king, this is the foundation of what makes a shmup good. A great shmup, in my view, can be played enjoyably for both score and survival and no matter what top players say, this is largely reflected in the preference of the average players. In the case of DDP for example, it has phenomenal survival/scoring link because the scoring enhances the survival gameplay, and the survival game play is very strong. And what's great about it is that in sections where the survival gameplay is less challenging for superplayers, (loop 1) then the super players can opt into it's extremely strict chaining system. So at all times DDP is able to provide top level challenge and then elegantly can separate out it's challenge between new and experienced players. Shiki 1, on the other hand, RELIES on its scoring for the gameplay to be interesting. If you remove the scoring meta of shiki, it's actual level design and stage design is stale borderline amateur. The gameplay ONLY comes alive with scoring. So what my critique is pointing out is that this is a weakness of the game because most people are not going to care about the scoring, that's a fact. So Shiki is putting a weaker foot forward by not making the survival gameplay more reflective of the scoring meta in itself. Like the timer. The timer for survival has no purpose, might as well not exist. For it to have a more balanced design, the timer should effect BOTH survival and scoring meta, not just scoring meta. And this happens across the board for most of shiki 1's design. Like the extends. Clearly the extends only matter within the scoring meta right, if you can't even access them via basic survival gameplay? VS ddp where the extends are accessible to both survival AND scoring players and the extend system effects the game on both levels. So do not get it twisted, I know you like Shiki 1 alot, but DDP owns shiki1 all day every day and is clearly the superior game in terms of survival and scoring design.

  • @M_Knight_Jul

    @M_Knight_Jul

    Жыл бұрын

    Shiki 1 is one of those games where the best part is using the unique and fun tools and engaging with the system, but the game doesn't outright force you to do that for a clear, yeah. Some other games like Psyvariar and Karous are a bit like that too and they tend to have this more niche appeal indeed, but at least they offer a really great experience for those who dig deeper. In that regard DDP requires less initial proactive investment from the player because just shooting and dodging should be good enough. It kinda has to anyways, since there's not much else to it in terms of tools. However, I feel like you are not making a lot of sense when it comes to DDP survival and scoring mixing. Your own bias shows. For sure, its survival is solid in isolation; its scoring is solid on its own too. Together, though? There's no real overlap, your "phenomenal link" is imaginary. The most common DDP survival meta (at least for 1-ALL) is to survive the early game and then bomb spam every scary part. Zero scoring consideration. Shiki 1 has strats where players milk 5-1 boss even for survival so they replenish their resources to tackle the final boss gauntlet more safely. And scoring through the run will continuously give back resources basically like Battle Garegga. Nothing like that exists in DDP because the extends are trivial to get. The Shiki 1 timer may not be super important for survival but the DDP chain timer is even less so as it can never even actively hurt you. Following your own logic, it "might as well not exist". And the Shiki scoring system also lets people score specific enemy waves if they are comfortable with them, and play the others for survival, while DDP chains are more all or nothing. Still, I personally don't think it is a problem to have such a disconnect anyways, as long as there's fun to be had with the game. DDP survival not requiring scoring is fine by me. But then you say DDP scoring "enhances" survival, but also that DDP extends can be gotten without scoring (so where's the enhancement?), and that apparently survival and scoring can be elegantly separated (so it's basically two different games, not an enhancement), but if Shiki 1 extends require some scoring then somehow it isn't an integration and it doesn't affect the survival gameplay (as if a survival player would willfully ignore extends??)...so which one is it? There's a big web of contradictions in there.

    I used to watch X-Play because I was already into Tech TV and video reviews weren’t as ubiquitous back then. The number one thing I hated was how much time they spent doing stupid gags and overreaching for jokes during the reviews. Sometimes they got through entire reviews without saying anything remotely critical. I only kept watching because I made my own game out of predicting how they would feel about certain titles then watching the review to see how accurate I was. I learned that they were not only bad comedians, they were also highly predictable.

    The ps2 port does have some nice features with the practices mode. Too bad the game isn't more pleasing for the eyes. Also would prefer some bullets to be bigger. It's the thin red ones that endboss of stage 2 and 3 uses that I find kinda hard to see. And the dialogue seems to be missing! Otherwise a nice game.

    I play cs2 and left this game in the corner. not because of the quality but because the sequel is a improivment. I like Those games because they are somewhere in a limbo of a transition of classic shmup and bullet hell (this more a proto bullet hell) and the formula was not standardized as today so there was much of experimentation. castle shikigami 1 and also those games from triangle service had unique gameplay mechanics (some good others not really). Playing today i fell that some of these games are unremarkable but well done games (wich is still a problem) , probably because some of the mechanics were good but lacked some polish but somehow their unique gameplay makes me comeback to them sometimes mainly because they are a experience i can´t find today. The boss fights are really cool, and i think modern bullet hells could learn something from them (also from classic shmups, but that is another conversation.

    Remember when Gamexplain got their 4th string reviewer from Romania to review Daemon X Machina who obviously didn’t want to review it too? Not saying Daemon X Machina is good or anything just saying it’s obvious there are certain genres that reviewers just have contempt for.

    @@TheElectricUndergroundI miss the show. The more perspectives on gaming, the better - and anyone looking for a “hardcore gaming” perspective wasn’t watching the show for information anyway. Plus Adam Sessler was great to me when I met him in person at GDC 2005 while I was recovering from my best friend shooting himself. One of the highlights from a show where was I was overwhelmed by the sexism at an ostensibly professional show, even at 21 - a good memory right up there with talking with Nobuo Uematsu, Marty O’Donnel and a lot of other industry greats I got to talk to.

    I had a similar experience with X-Play doing a favorite series of mine super dirty - Beatmania US for PS2. It was definitely a very flawed Beatmania game and many of the design decisions Konami made were questionable, like a tedious song unlocking system, ugly purple on rainbow color palette, inflated grades and trying to crossover the older beatmania catalogue with songs that were pushing 10 years old with a much jankier sound than the current Bemani music. It's not so much that X-play gave it a low rating, it's not a very good Beatmania game compared to the Japanese releases, but it's that they spent the time on the show just mocking the controller and doing a cringey DJ skit. You can tell from the footage that they played for maybe 20 minutes, had no idea what to do, and called it a day. They could have talked about the game's pedigree as the grandaddy of all music games, the keysounding, talk about the crazy difficulty and frame perfect timing, mention the Japanese PS2 releases, show some footage of Japanese super players in the arcade, anything. They just made fun of it and I'm sure most people who saw the episode probably never gave it a second thought afterwards. Konami couldn't replicate DDR's success and the game went straight to the bargain bin, which was great for the community in need of controllers, but after beatmania US was a solid 15 or so years of Konami ignoring the North American market for IIDX.
