It seems the strategies the left gleaned from Marcuse on tolerance (to always be intolerant of your adversary while excusing all actions of your allies), are now coming back on the left.. identity politics is also being weaponised to this end. The net effect if to damage the basic premise of free speech.

Exactly. Too often we see protestors conflating their right to express their opinion with coercive measures and impeding the speech of others. It's become, 'i won't allow you to drive across this bridge or access your class on campus unless I get my demands met or I'm going to shout over this person I disagree with so people can't hear then speak or blocking certain speakers from campus'. They are basically holding hostage the rights and freedoms of others and trying to play it off as free speech.

During the "Civil Rights" era, SCOTUS struck down the "Heckler's Veto." States were then obligated to protect unpopular speakers. The ruling is weakly enforced, e.g., the right-wing speaker Jared Taylor was denied Colorado Springs police protection b the mayor, so Taylor's appearance was cancelled by his hotel venue. This kind of thing happens to right-wing speakers quite a lot.

I would support the same for students who choose to hold protests against native American spaces protected from colonialism and calling the reservations apartheid spaces or protests on which students called the the return of the Confederacy, using the n word and that white people are superior. Yes, people shouldn't be criminalized for the speech, but universities should certainly have policies against racism that can and should be enforced.

This. I guess people fear they will insert Judaism into the intersectionality bc Islam is already there. I personally think intersectionality is what gets these students in such fervor in the first place, making them identity primarily not with their country or geographical community, but with their inherent characteristics. This is why I think religion should be protected from persecution under civil rights law, but religion should not be a protected class. Who thinks telling the majority race in this country that they are privileged will increase social cohesion? This is what I am against. DEI also enforces the progressive stack in hiring and promotion as well, which sounds good, but in the end, means someone is losing the opportunity. And then you have equity as the goal, which means representing the national ratio of identities to most people, which will take a decade to achieve. Is it worth a decade of discrimination of "majority" identities to further "social justice"? No it's not and it is morally wrong.

(b) CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTIONS .-Nothing in this Act shall be construed to diminish or infringe upon any right protected under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States." Let's be real, you can still say "F--- Jews" or any other minority because that's an opinion protected by the First Amendment. What you can't do is be belligerent about it on a nationally funded campus. Be honest, universities like Harvard or Carnegie Mellon don't accept government dollars because they need to, they do it because they can, which is all about padding profits not educating people. As Ike advised, "beware the industrial military complex" we also need to "beware the industrial educational complex" because they're after the same thing as we're noticing with the glut of student loans. It's what happens when you don't learn fast enough.

So what is the claim? That the affirmation of new legilstlation against the speech of those who are the enemies of free speech is dangerous for free speech? Im sorry, but I dont see the connection at the principale level, perhaps in the detail, in which case you would have to present that circumstance. Blood libels, advocation of genocide - should be outlawed for some reasons: 1. An expression can be understood as a realization of a threat, triggering legal permission for self defence. Indeed, an edge case scenario, nevertheless - a real one. If one calls for my death, at a certain point it is reasonable to consider that individual is trying to do so. 2. It can have real ecomonic impact on discriminatory grounds, leading to all other impacts. 3. A person can easily avoid blood libel and calling for genocide, without limiting protected speech. The definition of genocide is very clear, and not up for grabs. It is the deliberate attempt to eliminate a nation, excluding acts of self defence (facing genocide). Israel is clear from this accusation by the pretext, reenforced by it not dropping missles to the point of full eradication (which it is able to do). Note that one can easily oppose Israeli policies, or accuse of war crimes - but that is distinct from claiming that Israel should not exsist, and that it is committing genocide. You cant go around spreading that Jews use the blood of Christian babies for their Mazzah, knowing this to not be true (and at a certain level of intelligence - you are expected to investigate whether or not such a claim can reasonably be considered true before spreading it). You should not lobby or protest as an anti state, other if your expression is anti statutory all together. How about anti Puerto Rican, or anti Boztuana, or anti Dutch? Of course not. You can be anti their goverment policies, but you cannot express anti to their being - as that would be an expression of racist bias, and a call for genocide on racist grounds. This it true in this case irrespective of the distinction between Israel and Jews (they are both together or apart a people).

I think of this black girl at a BLM protest yelling at the white antifa black clad man who was breaking storefront windows in. I know you hate the police, but you could at least help the little guys who own stores in these low income areas from property destruction. 👎😤

Cant talk about the agitators that used BLM protests as cover to cause destruction to businesses big and small across america in 2020 either bc Fox News talked about it. It's like these movements have no leaders that can change focus to protect businesses from agitators that hide in their protests. If you dont want people to see your protest as destructive then organize your protests around protecting your communities from these agitators that want to see the world burn. I've only seen excusal for these individuals in left wing protests, like MAGA did with the destruction at the Capitol.

Never mind that the STUDENT protestors are non violent and could be left to just go on protesting without preventing classes or inhibiting anyone who doesn't WANT to be inhibited by their protests. The protests just look bad for college management. The fact that anyone would sick the riot police, violent counter protestors, and George Soros on anyone who makes them look bad is pathetic and anyone who justifies it is also pathetic.
