Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (GBA) Surprisingly Isn't Terrible!

Ойындар

Making this video turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I'm certainly grateful I decided to give the handheld version of Revenge of the Flying Dutchman a chance! Are there any licensed games you can name with a handheld equivalent that's worth checking out?

The reason that some GBA games still didn't use an in game save system and instead used passwords is probably cost. When it comes to game cartridges, battery backups (the way saving worked on most cartridge based consoles before the Switch) cost more than cartridges without the battery backup. This is also why it took so long for save files to be an industry standard even after the original Legend of Zelda came out on the NES, as NES cartridges that allowed saving were significantly more expensive at first. In other words, they were being cheap.

Didn't most GBA games use flash storage though? I know that a few of them used save batteries but a lot more used flash ram like the Sonic games and such...

@@JomasterTheSecond Maybe. I kind of assumed that most cartridge based systems used battery backups but I'm not an expert. It'd still require an extra hardware component that costs money, though, so the basic conclusion of my point would still stand.

@@JomasterTheSecond Yeah most GBA games used flash chips (some used SRAM+battery). Flash memory was still crazy expensive back then. There's a reason classic iPods used mini hard drives. Look up what the price of a 256/512mb thumbdrive was back in 2001-2004

This spongebob game for the GBA in particular gives me tons of nostalgia. I had this in a two pack cartridge with heropants but played this one more. Also the jellyfish jam mini game was fun.

I’ve always been a huge Spongebob fan, and since the DS was my first game console, I got nearly every Spongebob game for it. Here are my absolute favorites: -The yellow avenger I know you said you don’t remember this one too fondly, but neither did I before replaying 5 years ago. Now it’s one of my favorite spongebob games. I think it’s just a situation of “licensed game that doesn’t explain what to do clearly enough for a child” -Atlantis Squarepantis (DS) Unlike the console version (which is a top down puzzle game/minigame collection), the DS version is 3D platformer/puzzle game. I actually like it more than the console game. -Beach party cook off This game seems like a no-brainer for the DS, it’s a touch screen controlled game where you help make dishes in the Krusty Krab. One more thing: spongebob GBA/DS game songs are like a whole genre of their own, they have a very specific sound.

The save system was on the catridge rather than the console and it was powered by a small battery, therefore cutting it makes the catridges cheaper to produce.

Reason for save being the way it is, is 2 reasons 1. It's quite a bit easier to program 2. Back in this time carts needed a battery to save wich increases manufacturing costs

I would love to hear a review for the Wii's Truth or Square game, as it was the only major Spondebob title I had as a kid and I haven't heard it get much attention. I never got past the halfway point because the difficulty got really amped up in the second act compared to the first (I remember it took forever to beat the first level and the Christmas Who inspired ice level had a nasty combination of ice physics and tough enemies too difficult for child me to handle). It didn't help that the game's levels were actually very long. That said, I also remember the game was incredibly fun despite that and filled with great references. The story is WAY better than the episode it's based on, too. It has next to nothing to do with that garbage fire other than the vague idea of looking back at old memories. Only this time, it's about Spongebob hosting a party and his friends suggesting some of his happiest memories, leading to levels actually inspired by events from the show's past - so that's cool. On a side note, in terms of "licensed Nickelodeon games where the handheld version is way better than the console one", the winner for that is the DS's rendition of the last Nicktoons Unite game, Globs of Doom, by a landslide. The console version of that game has an infamous save file corruption glitch that can strike at any time. However, the handheld version does not, making it OBJECTIVELY better. It also helps that the DS version panders more to the one audience that'd knowingly pick Globs of Doom over the other games of the series - fans of Invader Zim (while Attack of the Toybots has Zim and Gir as hidden unlockable player characters, Globs of Doom is the only game in the series where the Zim cast is part of the main story and the one of the only video games period to have Dib be playable).

the original Gameboy did NOT contain savestates pokemon did, on the cartridge the pokemon cartridge contained a volatile ram chip with 4 banks of 8kb flash memory and a battery cell the first bank contains your HOF information, including 3 sprite buffers the second contain a bit by bit memory of the savestate of the game, including all the relevant location, items and npc interaction data the third and fourth slots contain data of the 1-6 boxes and 7-12 boxes of pokemon in the PC respectively savestate was NOT something the gameboy was capable of, and the gameboy did not contain the necessary storage to contain it. it was a feature of the cartridge. and inserting the same cartridge to a different gameboy would retain the savefile
