REVELLI ~ U of Mich Band: College Clarinetists Gone Wild! William D. Revelli ~ Weber Concerto

Музыка

Here's the first clarinet section of the U of Mich Symphony Band, (William D. Revelli, cond.) playing von Weber's Polacca from the Second Clarinet Concerto. Notice the meticulous articulation, impeccable intonation throughout the entire range of the instrument(s) and beautiful phrasing. This piece seldom receives such TLC and especially considering there are 6 performers! Apparently this was quite a hit on the 1961 USSR Tour. N. Y. Times compared it to Toscanini's concert when he featured the entire violin section playing Perpetual Motion by Paganini. Positive comments welcome. Schembechler and Revelli became good friends because of their attention to detail (aka perfection). Revelli was Bo's first visitor when he came to Michigan, and Schembechler. asked him to teach The Victors to the football team. The U of M became one of the greatest college music programs under his leadership.

As a fairly decent clarinetist, I tried to play this---not so much. Back in the sixties I heard the UM band at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. The first clarinet section played this and absolutely blew me away! Only thing about that concert I remember as maybe being more amazing was the girl who played the oboe solos on Italian in Algiers. Incredible!!!! That was the best band concert I ever heard. I still remember it. What an marvelous, marvelous band! Bravo!!! Bravo!!!

I performed this in high school for solo ensemble festival @ state. Also performed it for my Interlochen audition. Principle @ Interlochen and a 1 rating at state. My teacher went to Michigan and studied with Moeller. This recording is the 1st clar section only. Very impressive.

The quality of the accompanying band is awesome, like a large chamber ensemble with clarity and precision.

Several years ago I heard the principal clarinetist of the USAF Band play this. Knowing that this is MULTIPLE clarinetists just boggles the mind.

One of my all-time favorite recordings. Tough enough for a soloist to get it right, let alone 6. This sounds like the recording on "University of Michigan Band On Tour", made the year they toured the Soviet Union.

@Sinsr240 When we went on tour Revelli listened to every member of the band (scarry!) and eliminated some because of the expense. BTW - I had a strong "Twilight Zone"dream about Revelli recently. In the dream he reminded me that 2011 will be the 50th anniversary of the tour. I wonder if anything is being planned for that (like a release of some of the Leningrad and Moscow concerts? Something to hope for!

As a former member of the Michigan Symphony Band under Dr. Revelli, I remember him telling us that Eugene Gonzalez was responsible for rehearsing the six first clarinetists playing this piece. We were 100 persons strong when I played under Revelli -- men and women. The first clarinet section always numbered six.

That's a neat tidbit of info. Eugene Gonzalez was my solo & ensemble judge multiple times in high school. He was so gracious and always coached a bit after we played. My flute teacher in college was Sarah Trautman, she was on the Russion Tour..she told me wonderful Revelli stories. I played under Dr. Revelli in college twice for an extended visit/concert, it was a wonderful experience!!

It was harder to play under Revelli than it was to play under Schembechler. He was an Italian dictator.

I spent a week long clinic and concert with Revelli in 87, I could tell that his style was very much about the player's fear of the conductor. You may get perfection, but having your players afraid of you is old, old school. I'm glad I had that experience, though.

I had an LP recording of the band's 1961 tour of Russia and this piece was of course included with the record envelope saying that the clarinet piece sounded like one person, not the section. I tried copying the record which wasn't that clear on a CD but it's rather scratchy and have tried at the university to see if they had some copy of that record but so far no response, can anyone help?

@bmcgar Not! There are actually only six clarinetists here. One is a friend of mine. She said that they hardly ever rehearsed it! The record info is exaggereated - presumably to sell records. The cover also states that there were "100 MEN STRONG" in the band which is also wrong - there were less than 90 and included many women. Don't believe everything you read.
