In 1978 GM downsized its popular lineup of intermediate models and while still rear wheel drive, they also had substantially less horsepower and torque than previous models owing to growing emissions and fuel economy concerns. In 1986 starting with the 305 cubic inch V-8, they increased the compression, added a hotter cam and larger diameter exhaust with the higher flow catalytic converter from the Corvette to get a respectable 175 horsepower rating. With the revised 3.42:1 rear axle ratio, the 0 to 60 mph times decreased down to the low 9 second range. These mechanical improvements were wrapped in a stylish body with an all-new aerodynamic friendly nose, unique to the model

Features
Authentic factory stock type wheels and tires or outrageous large diameter spoked rims with low profile rubber tires.
Detailed V-8 engine with single 4 bbl. carb or fuel injected induction systems.
Tampo printed black window edges.
Multiple Stock and Custom Decal options.
Molded in white, transparent red and clear with chrome plated parts and soft black tires
1985-1988[edit]
For 1985, T-tops were re-introduced because it had been discontinued after the 1983 model year and additional SS colors (Black, maroon and silver in addition to white), pinstriping, and options were made available. The (later to be highly sought after) medium blue ("gun metal") color for the SS was dropped. A four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, the Turbo Hydramatic 200-4R, with a revised sport rear axle ratio containing 3.73:1 gears became standard on the SS. Gone for good were the 229 CID V6 and 350 CID V8 diesel engines. Introduced in place of the 229 CID V6 was a 262 CID (4.3 L) V6 (RPO LB4) that was fuel-injected with throttle-body fuel injection. The V-8's were fitted with computer controlled Quadrajet carburetors.
The 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Chevy's rear-wheel-drive personal-luxury car, got more power, but for the first time since 1981, no diesel engine was offered in the Monte Carlo. On the base model, the previously standard 3.8 L Chevy V-6 gave way to a larger 4.3 L V-6 with throttle-body fuel injection. That brought along 20 extra horsepower, for a new total of 130. The optional 5.0 L V8 likewise gained some horsepower, via a jump in compression ratio. It jumped from 150 horsepower to 165. The High Output 5.0 L V8 in the 1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS remained at 180 horsepower. 10.5-inch front disc brakes were standard.[20] A/C was $730.[22] The V-6 and base V8 could be backed by either a three- or four-speed automatic transmission, but the H.O. V8 in the SS came only with the four-speed automatic this year. Though the base coupe carried on visually unchanged, the SS was a different story. Previously offered only in white or dark blue metallic, color choices were expanded to include silver, maroon, and black. "Removable glass roof panels" (T-tops) came on board as a midyear option.[20] Nearly 120,000 Monte Carlos found eager buyers in 1985. Though the total was down somewhat from 1984, the SS model saw sales climb from 24,050 to 35,484, a sure sign that performance was making a comeback. The 1985 Monte Carlo SS also came stock with a 35 millimeter sway bar which added extra support for the high-performance rear end.
For 1986, there were four distinct body styles available. The base model Sport Coupe was still available with the same general body panels that it had since 1981, but featured new "aero" side mirrors similar to those on Camaros and Chevrolet Corvette of the 1980s . New for the 1986 model year was a Luxury Sport model that had a revised front fascia, new "aero" side mirrors, and an updated sleek-looking rear fascia. The LS front fascia included "Euro" headlights with removable bulbs in a glass composite headlamp housing, versus the smaller sealed beam glass headlights of previous years. The rear bumper of the LS no longer had a "notch" between the bumper and trunk, and the taillights wrapped around so that they were visible from the sides of the car. The Super Sport model for 1986 incorporated the "aero" mirrors, yet still utilized the prior year's styling for the rear bumper. Also new this year was the Aerocoupe model. The Aerocoupe was created by modifications to the Super Sport body, including a more deeply sloped rear window and a shorter trunk lid sporting a spoiler that lay more flat than previous Super Sports. Only 200 Aerocoupes were sold to the public, which happened to be the exact number NASCAR officials required for road model features to be incorporated into the racing cars. 1986 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe Registry & Information

Looks great! One point of note, though: on the cast-aluminum wheels, there were NO trim rings. The bright "ring" around them was milled aluminum....had a black '86 SS Monte Carlo with these wheels years ago. The center caps DID have a chromed finish....BTW, these wheels were originally used on the 1980-'81 Z28 Camaro.

It seemed like half the guys I knew in college had a G Body. I had a '79 Monte, then an '85 Grand Prix. One friend had an '82 Elco and his dad's drag racer was an '84 Monte. Another co-worker had an '83 Cutlass. The work truck for the tire store I worked at was a GMC Caballero with the 4.3. I also knew someone with an old lady Regal with the V6. The late 90's and early 00's were a great time to drive one. Cheap and the last of the RWD full frame, mid sized (for their time) platforms.

In my neck of the woods I was always partial to the black bodies with the red/orange pinstripes. Good old days. When I was 15 and working on my driver's license and first set of wheels I had a good friend at work that had a '87 SS that offered to sell it to be back then for 2 grand and my father said no f'n way. :( That was back in 1989. :( I remember him taking me for a ride in it to go get lunch and he would show off and push it to the limit on the curves and we spun out once but he recovered but it was fun!. :) That was right when the Eagle GT's were being upgraded to the Eagle GT's +4's. Such a sexy looking car.

  • @johnh6791

I meant to say the GT+4's would have kept it gripping the road better than the GT's. :) That would have been one of my first upgrades to make to it before I was denied purchase of it. :( Wound up with a '79 D-100 Dodge pu with a slant six. Not that I am complaining too much, but I would have gotten a serious piece of ass I was after in high school that I wanted if I had the fuckin SS. Jeanne Vance I am sorry to drag you around in that old fucking dodge POS. Forgive me love!! :(

Looks really good in white with that red interior - like it! I'm just building the same (black with burgundy interior) and used your tips with pledge for the shiny parts for dashboard and doorpanels. Thank you for that easy tip! Greeting from Germany. Great build! These Montes were part of GM’s G-Bodies and they were among the best cars GM ever built. To this day. We had an ‘85 Regal T-Type. Same 305. The Monte looked cooler but under the hood it was the same car. My dad bought it New in ‘85 and it was my first car when I turned 19 in ‘96. Indestructible! These cars were solid as a tank and could take all the abuse you threw at it. Only downfall is they were rust buckets if you drove it in winter.

Yeah every lot was full of those cars growing up. And then as teens we all got them as hand me downs from the parents and dropped 350s and 383s in them.

Lol, okay when I get mine I think I'm gonna go oppisite from what you did. Just wanna be different, and the color might be fire orange-from "Testors" because THAT rules! I loved these as a teenager. There is a list of cars I'd love to restore and this car is on the list. I always wanted to buy one, but I wanted either white or black, with T-Tops, but it seems a lot of people bought the maroon with maroon interior, not a fan. Definite buy, thank you for the review, great job! Looks great!

Building this one now (along with a '70 Jack Reacher Chevelle SS that's definitely a step down in quality from this "Monte"), and in the order you did it in, as well as the colors you did it in. So far, so (very) good. One thing: The third tail light was a USDOT rule for all 1986 cars sold in the United States and, like you say, most manufacturers just bolted in some sort of lash-up on top of either the package shelf or in a rear spoiler or such. My family (except for me, because I went into the military after high school and stayed in it for a quarter-century and took a nice commissioned officer's pension home with me when I finally packed it in) worked in skilled trades or on "the line" at the "Big Three" (back then, today's "Detroit Three" were the largest automakers in the world) in and around Detroit, and my dad was a UAW master electrician at the now-long-gone Turnstead/Fisher Body plant in SW Detroit, so we always had a really nice GM product in the driveway, courtesy of the employee discount, LOL!. I think Wisconsin was the home state for American Motors, wasn't it? At any rate, a couple of them told me that the automakers were looking at something like $15-$20, their cost from suppliers, for a better looking, more integrated third tail light, initially. Well, you can imagine the total cost to the maker for such an expensive part, considering a successful model might sell a couple hundred thousand units, so they went with a cheaper "bolt-on" assembly, generally, for the first couple of years or if the model was aged and due for an imminent re-tool and re-make. Anyway: To this day, whenever I see a vintage ride from the 80s, I look to see if it has the third tail light or not, so as to figure out if it's an '85 or older or an '86 or newer. ;-)

Back in 1986 I had the real deal! I had a '81 Z28 went out bar hopping with a couple of buds of mine, drove the one guys '84 & had to have an MC SS. I bought mine at Fencl Tufo Chevy in beautiful downtown Glendale Heights IL from 1986-1996 before totalling it on New year's day. It was black & gray and fully loaded including T-tops. It was a daily driver to the tune of 158,000 miles. I'd love to buy this kit so I can build a duplicate of it.
