A sniper would disagree. It might look like a rock or a bush from a far but to a sniper it's a rock or bush that moves. which would indicate that said rock or bush has a human attached to it.

There are also camouflage nets and materials that mimic leaves. Most of the time, it's because officers and NCO's micromanage their troops into not doing it because mUh RaNk.

In US Army, sometimes they used to wear "Hooah hair" - strips of cammo clothe tied to net and hat band of the helmet. There have been different items soldiers use, based on the location they are operating in. In forest you dont want to get tangled, in a jungle there are other issues like trapping heat and moisture . Apparently, the sneppet works well in more desert like locations. Soldiers can be very inventive.

@ゴロゴロ The QBZ is bad because the designers were given just two years to create the rifle from scratch, so in retrospect its actually a decent effort even if the ergonomics are terrible. The designers of the SA80 though took a good existing rifle, the AR-18 and made it shit. They made it heavier, less reliable and more difficult to use just so it could be shorter (even though the AR-18 already had a folding stock) and the British Army wouldnt not lose face for adopting the IRA's signature weapon.

Only issue was the resulting SA80 was inferior to the AR-18 in almost every single way.

Two Israeli heads above a dune will have two different shapes or silhouettes so not being regular can be easily discounted by other soldiers unlike undisguised regular shaped helmets.. Yes you can stick bits of bush and twigs into the netting over a conventional helmet, but in a desert where there few bushes and none grow at the top of sand dunes they might bring attention down on you. Besides even if there are bushes Israeli soldiers don't need them as their disrupted pattern is already there. They are always invoking this "Sparta" refence since they see themselves as a "Jewish Sparta" state which it is, but the facts are they have NO real claim to that land they occupy their claim is purely Theological since most of them do not originate in the middle east, besides I believe this goofy helmet covering was because the effectiveness of Hezbollah Snipers in South Lebanon one ex Israeli soldier told me he still has nightmares of his fellow occupier soldier being shot in the face after he lit up a smoke at night in an observation post in South Lebanon.

I think the dialogue was correct: it breaks up the bowl shape of the helmet/head. Q: does the bottom of the head gear have stiffeners so the shape doesn't drop too low? Having a sunburned neck from wearing the issued pot, I appreciate the movable shape. It appears to be adaptable to gilly suit concept. Thanks for the video.

Our unit (US Army) had to wear a chunk of camo net on our helmets and it was awful. Would get tangled in everything, including gear, foliage, wire, etc. It didn’t really break up the outline because we were given so little of it, we had to strap it to the helmet so tightly it just was an additional helmet cover. The negative outweighs the positive by far for a bulky, flowing piece of cloth dangling from your head in combat situations.

unfortunately Mitznefets are being phased out, because the dense urban warfare scenarios of today (especially in the streets of the west bank and Gaza) have streets so narrow the Mitznefet is a liability prone to getting stuck in tight corners. it might return should the northern border get hot again and troops might need to reinforce those mountainous border more, but currently the IDF is phasing them out because where soldiers are expected to fight it's benefits are limited.

I'm not sure where you've encountered this rumor, but I'm 100% certain, it is wrong. You can remove the miznefet in a matter of a second, and put it back on almost as fast. And the need for it, depends on the environment you are in. Example: when we were approaching our target from open areas, we had them on. And as we approached dense vegetation(trees and bushes) or urban environment, we'd remove them. This is a very useful tactical piece of gear. If anything, it will be upgraded in some way, like a default mini pouch on the back of the helmet's cover, where it can be stored.

The old South African Defence force's Nutria Brown camo and the fact that some SADF troops grass and stuff in their hats to help break up their silhouette. The reason I mentioned the Nutria brown camo is because the camo would become more and more effective in camouflaging the soldier the longer it stood in the sun. The fading of the camo also gave you a status, if it was quite faded, you were an ouman(old man) and you were not to be messed with and an ouman doesn't mean your age but how long you saw service on the border. If your uniform was still dark and new, you were a newbie(I can't remember the actual status name so I'm just gonna use newbie).

In the IDF paratroopers during the 2nd Intifada, it was a ball cap. It was standard issue but only for those who had been through advanced training. It started out olive green, but the closer to a bleached bone color it became in the desert sun, the more status the wearer had with everyone. Mine was the color of light sand when I left service, and I had managed to keep the bill from fraying as well, which wasn't usually the case.

I've seen those Israeli helmet covers for quite some time & reasoned that they were to break-up the outline and blend in with nature. Australian & New Zealand soldiers (maybe others too) wear giggle hats, which are essentially floppy 'beach hats' made from denim & either army green or a mix of camoflage colours. I like the other advantage of extra shade that the Israeli style head wear offers.

Absurd. Omg. WhoTF told this guy that? Where'd he learn that crap from? He likely just made that shit up. People can't figure out it's to drape a camo cloth fabric type cover??? I have one. And it's simply "put up" when not used as intended and on the move just like how women put their hair up sometimes up in a bun, she just let it down. Wtf. And that first explanation is def not it. When let it down, it covers all features to below the shoulders and the tiny holes in it allow to easily see out threw it but not in from the distance. Just like putting a low thread count sheets over your head, can still see outward but not inward. If the first reason was the real reason, they'd simply put sticks, twigs, small branches and leaves on their helmets just like snipers, rangers, and other units put on their helmets. The 360° shade and sun protection can be achieved other ways. I'd like this guy to point out or source the person or literature where he learned this BS from. Just go get a bit of camo cloth (that porous stuff and drape over your helmet and you'll see how easy it is to see threw it outward, but not inward to the face. And when not using it, just take the corners n sides and bundle it up on top of helmet and it'll look like that, a "chef's hat" LOLOL.
