It has been more than seventeen years since you came to Guwahati, Master.
PR: There was this political issue in between, no?
Q: What have you to do with politics, Master? All that will go on.
PR: That will go on, but if there are lions and tigers roaming in the jungle, will you say, ''No, no, you can still come.''?! Once, somebody wanted to trap me. They said, ''Sir, are you
afraid of the lion?''
''No, no, not at all.'' ''But you said that ...'' I said, ''A few of you will be there,
too, isn't it? I shall somehow get away.'' Understand?
Will you be there with me?
Q: Where?
PR: In Assam.
In fact, the meaning of 'being together' means this: whether the path is clear or not,
good or not, whether the road is straight or not ...
Q: I will be there with you!
(We shall be there with you, Master.)
PR: In our system of marriage,
the main thing is what we call the saptapadi [seven steps].
The bride and groom go around the fire, hand-in-hand:
''The journey of our life begins here; thus, shall we walk together; the sacred fire stands witness to this.''
So, being husband and wife is not an easy task.
In happiness, in sorrow, in health, in illness - together. Understand?
It has not been told in the Ramayana, perhaps, that the Brahmins of South India don't shave here, on the left forearm.
Because, in the end when Sitadevi calls out for her mother and goes into the earth below, then Ramachandraji wanted to pull her out by her hair [by wrapping it around his left forearm]. But he was not able to do it. So, they don't shave here. Some people say mythology, some people say katha [story]; those who believe it to be real, for them it is real.
Q: Master, what's the difference between meditation and concentration?
PR: Concentration is the result of meditation.
You meditate holding only one thought in the mind.
When you do it successfully over a period of time, it becomes concentration.
Concentration means that, no?
Why are we not successful right from the beginning when we start meditating?
We try, isn't it?
Q: How do you overcome temptation?
PR: We all have different temptations.
Suppose you are tempted by, let us say, gajak [a sweet]; others don't like it. Why?
So the temptation is not in gajak; it is in you. Another fellow likes motichoor laddu the other fellow says that it is too sticky. So, is it in the motichoor laddu?
[No], it is in him.
So temptation is within you and, if you try to fight outside, there is nothing because there
is no enemy outside.
It is like the story of that fellow going around, shooting at images - Don Quixote.
You must have read it. (In India they call him Don Quix-ote.)
Have you read it?
He goes running against the windmill. So first I must recognise that the temptation is in me, not outside.
Like fear is in me, not outside.
Then you have to fight here by cleaning yourself. That's why, in meditation, one important aspect is the
evening cleaning - daily you have to do it. If you don't do it, it is like cooking in a dirty vessel
without cleaning it. If you are going to receive milk in a tin in which kerosene has been stored, how will the milk be?
Q: Master, why do we get dreams?
PR: Why do we get dreams?
Well, dreams are because the day's impressions; we have so many - they are coming out. Most of them are what we have
undergone during the day.
Q: But sometimes you get those which you don't want to see.
PR: You have no choice.
To tell you a rather dirty example, when there are babies - four years and five years old - they eat sweets that they like. Next morning, while going to the toilet, they tell, ''Mummy, I don't want to lose my chocolate and my sweets.''
It is not in your control. Yes, it's a fact - I have seen children actually looking into the toilet to see it!
If you have grown up with little brothers and sisters, all of you will know that this is true - at least in the old days when families lived together. So you have no choice. When you are young, you are acquiring all sorts of impressions. There is no good, there is no bad, there is no ugly, because the mind has to learn. That is why in childhood so much is stored. Now, when you are an adult and you are able to regulate what goes in, then you have a choice to say, ''No, this I will not see.'' ...
