That was a devastating knockout! I have never seen that. One of the most brutal KOs ever!

Rubin may have a bit lucky to have caught Fernandez early on before the latter got warmed up. Florintino was an awesome puncher in his own right. Those middlewweights back in the '60's could really get it on.

Dunphy kept talking about left hooks and all the damage was done by short rights . Fernandez never knew what hit him

The right brought him down the first time. It was a left after after a quick right that did him in the 2nd time though. Pretty amazing fighter.

It certainly was not Floro's night, but he is included on a long list of great Cuban fighters. Florentino fought all the top contenders. At that time there were a lot less fighting weights. If you were a Lightweight, that was it, now they have Lightweight, Super Lightweight and Junior Lightweight and so on. Florentino finished his career at 50-16-2 with 43 of his 50 victories by knocked outs. He himself was knocked out or technical KO, 10 times.

Rubin spelled his name Rubin, somehow a sports writer or two misspelled it and it would appear on occasion like that. Fernandez was an amazing warrior, he is the only man to ever stop my friend Jose "Chegui" Torres. There are those boxing fans that feel Florentino Fernandez won the 15 round fight for the title with Gene Fullmer. Rubin at this stage of his career was a tremendous fighter with fast hands who also took out the legend Emile Griffith in one round too.

@@ronlipton1 Thanks for the reply Ron. Really appreciate it. Yes, I remember reading an article about you and Rubin many years ago. Wasn't the Ring, could have been Boxing Illustrated. Always remembered it and always looked out for you after that. When you talk boxing your level of understanding of the sport is top tier and rare today. The whole Carter saga is so well documented often by people who never knew him and just rehash the story again and again, adding nothing new. I've read what you've said about the case etc and you are a man of integrity whose opinion I value. You knew the man inside out. As to the boxing side of things it's clear that he was indeed a tremendous puncher and it must have taken a lot to step into the ring to spar with him once, let alone as often as you did, especially given the fact he had a real mean streak. The KO's of Griffith and Fernández were awesome. Nobody ever did that to Griffith before or since in his long career as you know. The way Fernández' head reacted to that final punch was something I've never seen to quite such an extent before. You could see the power in Rubin's punches also in the shots he missed. The way the power dragged him with the missed punches was incredible. I don't know John H. personally but of course he is well loved to this day in the UK. His title winning fight with Napoles in Mexico City was one of the great away wins for a British fighter as you know and the whole country used to watch his fights with the likes of Hedgemon Lewis live on free TV back in the good old 70s when I was a kid. Anyway Ron, I've taken up enough of your time, but I'd just like to say what an absolute pleasure it's been to communicate with you. A real unexpected pleasure out of the blue. Take care Ron.
