It's cool when you compare two recent versions of modern games. Makes the observations super specific.

Ray traced sound was in the PS5 version as well. I remember being surprised at the time because I had not realized you could use RT for something like that. It helps with your bearings and where shots are coming from In heavy fights. The sound design in this game really is S tier. As are the haptics. Haptics will work on PC if you’re using a Dual Sense and I highly highly recommend it. Returnal is still one of the very best uses of the Dual Sense we’ve seen all gen.

The PS5 didnt had RT sound. The RT sound on returnal just makes it simply makes it more muffled adjusted on the area ur in. You can hear where shots are coming from on any normal stereo headphones thats been like since 20-30 years ago thats nothing new xD

audio with headphones is something i never heard before! sony calls it 3D audio i not expectet really wat from it, until i heard it!!!!! in Returnal it is, not possible to discribe it it sounds like 4D!!!!!!!! with brutal dynamic and clarity! is a abnormal wide soundstage 3D audio is the perfect name for it if You have a high end 20.000.-, tv, 2D with all features you can not compare the experience to a 3D movie!!!

The particle effects in this game are amazing, might just buy it. Also solid comparison Nick!

I have never gotten a chance to play this game 🎮 on the PS5. This is my first time playing it on the gaming pc 🖥 and loving it.

The PC version looks amazing. It looks significant sharper and clearer, but the Ps5 still looks great. Would love to see if Housemarque could perhaps go back to the Ps5 version and add a different upscale solution and use FSR 2.0 instead. I think it would help with the image quality on Ps5.

I think that's hard to happen, almost impossible. Housemarque confirmed they are done with Returnal and 100% focused in their next game, which is a brand new IP. The PC version was made by the studios Sony acquired/hired with the sole purpose of porting their games to PC.

Its mostly all the same volume and distance while all being more one sound than a bunch of individual sounds. Where as the "ray traced sound" is a bunch of more realistic sounds existing in the game. This is very impressive audio and im really curious as to what they did.

@@undergrounddojokeyboardcag701 The PS5 version also incorporated ray tracing tech for the audio. From Eurogamer: "the hardware RT system in PlayStation 5 is also used to take the 3D audio in Returnal to the next level: audio environment queries are accelerated with hardware ray tracing support."

Feeling the rain patter through the dualsense controller is something that adds a lot to the experience. The trigger effects are also top notch.

The game is beautiful one of the most beautiful game that make me instantly buy the Ps5. But the game is pretty difficult and most of gamer love to play on easy setting and it cost the game . I love it

I find it doesn't stutter at all if I disable Ray Tracing. Annoying to do, but even without RT it still looks way crisper and runs at significantly higher framerates than the PS5 version, so still a win. The smoothness is definitely more appreciable than the reflections imo

You need a powerful pc to play in 60+ fps.

Bought Returnal release day PS5, now for PC. It looked stellar on PS5. PC takes it to skyrocketing stellar. MKB works awesome, and rebinding keys is an option. The sound is amazing on a DAC/AMP with Phillips Fidelo headphones

Not all of them but the most of the lighting differences you mentioned are coming from SDR conversation of Ps5 system level gamma. Alex from DigitalFoundry explains it quite well. It looks more contrasty, dark on pc because of that. You can adjust both version with its gamma slider as you wish. But yes the default presentation is different initialy because of the different RGB container spectrum.

fyi audio comparisons aren't accurate due to everyone having different audio equipment and youtube compression.

this is a type of game that you are not care about graphices a lot and you are more in to the gameplay.

It seems absurd to me that you have not yet made the direct comparison video of the witcher 3 next gen

I think the purple vs blue, and grey vs blue could have to do with the PS5 getting a custom tone mapping for SDR content. I'm not sure on that though.

Has to be. I played the game on HDR only and I never saw purple glowing "tendrils" like in the video.

Loved the PC port. The visual quality completely elevates the game. The only issue I had was the stuttering.

It is obvious that the PC version looks and performs better, but you need to spend a lot of money and do a good amount of tweaking to the game and I am too lazy and stupid to do it, so I’ll stick the console gaming.

It's completely inaccurate to say "THE" PC version. It's "one of the" PC versions with a much more expensive configuration. 99% of people will absolutely not have this rendering on their PC. And it would be honest to give the configuration of the PC. If I buy a PC for €500 in a store will I get the same result?

You need a minimum of like a 3070 or some kind of equivalent to play this at decent resolution/FPS which by itself is like a 300, 400 dollar card IMO. So you’re right this pretty much requires a 1200 dollar plus PC.

Everything is so the game is visually improved and in itself is very good (as a game).But, ****** The game constantly stutters especially when opening doors. It's just awful, having rtx 40 series, 32gbRam, 16 thread processor with a constant 110 fps, the whole gameplay is in constant stuttering!

Disable RT audio and reflections/shadows and the constant stuttering goes away. There is still a little traversal hitch here or there but it's not bad. The developers are aware of the RT stuttering issue and have promised a patch and they will also be upgrading to DLSS3/FSR2 soon.

Bullets reflected on the water would be insanely confusing in a bullet hell game like this. It's absence is an intentional choice

More so than the other PS5-> PC releases. Nothing too crazy though. And thankfully nothing seems to be missing either!

I got no stutters, butter framerate all the time in my PC, ps5 controller also works amazing with PC, it has all the feedback and sounds.

Love this game. Still did not finish it on ps5. Wish it would work well on the steamdeck.

dont worry about the SteamDeck. This game is designed to be played on a powerful PC @ 4k.

I compare this game to Rachet and clank rift apart and I must say the sphere bullets are so much more fun to dodge while playing a shooter.

I had constant stuttering on PC even with DLSS so I had no choice but to refund, hopefully they'll fix it in near future

what resolution are you playing at and with what pc hardware do you have?

Waiting for time (€€€€😁) to buy an OLED, so I can play this game in all its glory. In the meantime, maybe Sony will improve ray tracing.

I notice a good difference in audio quality, it sounds good on the PS5 already, but a lot more clairity and not as muffled on the PC. This doesn't even have to be a huge overhaul, going over the frequencies in equalization tools for all the sounds is enough to bring that extra oumph in the lower and then for clarity on the mid and high. And maybe it has been compressed in some way for the ps5 and nothing was changed soundwise for the port, guess the developers only know. It's not a massive change, but absolutely noticeable. Good review, keep it up.

Because bluetooth audio is terrible whatever wireless headset you use or wired headset connected to a controller unlike directly connecting wired headset to your PC. When I switched from PS5 to PC I instantly noticed the improvement in audio quality.

Can you do the same with the steam deck ? I'm about to get a steam deck and buy Returnal i'm in love with this game

No, the PS5 doesn't support Dolby. They have their own sound Tempest audio system, which can also sound fantastic. Returnal was among the best and God of War: Ragnarok just won a bunch of major sound awards for last year. Naughty Dog's games have also sounded among the best of any developer, and that goes back several years. I had a 7.1 Marantz/ Polk setup with the PS3, and I actually went and tried to answer the door of my apartment because I thought a door knock in a cut scene in an Uncharted game was someone at my front door.

There is literally non difference when you play the game so I don’t know why the fuck people are always saying « the PC is the ultimate machine to play » and stuff like that. Bruh …. 💀

Focusing on the lighting and particle effects were absolutely the right choices for the PS5 version. During actual play, you aren't zooming in on model textures or foliage detail, you're trying to dodge the light show of 100 projectiles flying at you.

When comparing particle effects PLEASE DISABLE DLSS. It is proving more of that effect nearly every game.

PC sounds seem to have more depth, you can more accurately pinpoint location of sound sources (ff my gaming and music making skills serve me right). Or both could be the same. The environment sounds more immersive in PC one.

​@@DANRYX If you put it that way, i estimate the costs of a machine that runs this at max settings with 60 fps quite dependant on what resolution you want to play it on and if you will be using upscaling and/or Frame Generation or whatever kind of technique you may wanna use. For native 1440p with RT and all the bells and whistles i do think you will have to spend about 2.5k in Euro's.

What resolution would you be looking at? For 1440p minimum of 1500 IMO, for 4K minimum of 2K set up. That’s if you don’t want to skimp on other important things or get lower quality stuff. A lot of people will cheapen out on things like PSU or RAM, Mobo, Storage, even getting a cheaper aftermarket card can be a bad thing IMO. I tried it a few times of cheapening out on parts and its always cost me lol. PC gaming is an expensive hobby but not the most expensive, it just has a pretty steep learning curve and cost of entry. Once you learn the reputable parts and how to configure things you’ll be okay.

well, we still don't have bloodborne on pc or Demon souls, I would like to have it on pc, only one reason why I bought console, I played bloodborne on ps4 then I sold it, I played Demon souls on ps5 and Returnal as well I sold it after I finished those titles, even if that game is available on pc now it's pointless for me to get it just for graphic improvements, boring af after spending 200h on ps5 playin it, and waiting for game 2 years is just pointless for me

DLSS hurts image quality most of the time. I only use it in comparisons when the hit to the image quality isn't relevant to the topics being discussed. I used DLSS in the Hogwarts comparison because the comparisons were focused more on big picture things like the architectural design of the levels and general layout. But this video is focused solely on the actual image presentation itself, and PC can drive better visuals by disabling DLSS all while still maintaining great performance (minus the stuttering). Normally I use DLSS for gameplay outside of videos because it does help with performance. But in this game, there's really no need for it with my rig because the 4090 is running the game at 100+ fps on average already.

@@Nick930 ah ok makes sense. I have it on the PS5 and PC (4090) and was switching between the two and the PC version makes the PS5 look like it's got a smear of Vaseline over the image. I have noticed though I'm not getting above 100FPS maxed out on quality and think I may need to upgrade something 😞

Ray tracing will put a load on your cpu and the 4090 is that powerful to be bottlenecked even by some of the best gaming cpu's currently even at 4K with ray tracing on. I have run into this with mine paired with a Ryzen 7700X. Ive done a bench video playing the game on my ultrawide at 3440 x 1440p everything on Epic including RT no DLSS get around 120ish fps and gpu utilization is at 85% so there's a cpu ram bottleneck or engine bottleneck not sure. I wouldn't stress over it. 100 fps is really nice lol

I never noticed she had heterochromia.
