Return to Hanoi: 50 Years of Freedom

Retired Air Force Col. Robert Certain, a B-52 navigator and former prisoner of war, worked with MOAA to organize a trip back to Vietnam to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Operation Homecoming and the return of more than 600 POWs from North Vietnam. Seven former POWs as well as family and friends joined Certain to see southern Vietnam and Cambodia and return to Hanoi to see what remains of the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison.

I was 10 in 1976 and was very much aware of the war. My mother cried when the POWs came home in 1973, even though we didn’t know anyone who served in Vietnam except for my Dad’s cousin who had returned in 1970. I had two neighbors, one on one side, one on the other that were Navy officers, but one was actually CIA, (I asked him), and we had an FBI agent across the street. I learned a lot just sitting on their front porches. In any case I always felt very attached to the war and the pows that were left behind, especially in Laos.

Linebacker II operation in 1972 was kept secret until U.S. allowed to publish in 1999. But Vietnam published in 2021. Battle of 1972 in Vietnamese version Battle of Dien Bien Phu Tren Khong. I watched to the end. Can't believe 30 years old radar 3cm made in 1942 was connected to Sam2 made in 1950 and then knocked down B-52 in real films during battle. In fairy, should mentioned electronic radar box of F-4, B-52 was repaired and then used it as part guidelines Sam2 missiles. At that time 1972, Soviet with Sam3,4,5 and 6 but won't send to Vietnam. I saw in films few U.S. pilot disrespect ill discipline. Used signs language time to time. No go home because their fault. Many MIA forever can't find because ill discipline. Attack NVA rob AK-47 that's why grenade in their mouth.
