Return to Consett part one of two

Consett is a town situated around 25km south west of Newcastle in County Durham. Famed for its steel works and red dust which closed thirty years ago, it is the place I spent most of my teenage years. Here I describe some of the things I see and how it has changed.
My channel on you tube : / alanheath is one of the most prolific from Poland. I have produced over 1,700 original films. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects
Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating!
There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Brings back memories....my grandparents lived down the road in The Grove and one of their sons, my uncle, along with his father both served their time in the electrical dept. of the iron works. In later life, my uncle worked upstairs in the repair dept of Forsters shop, fixing televisions and radios. When young, I recall visiting him and being amazed at his skills. The tv sets had tiny screens compared with today, but they were very bulky due to the size of the crt (remember those?).

I was born in Consett in 1969 and moved to Billingham. Have now been living in Sydney for 20 years. My nana lived on oakdale road (Margaret Barrett). The Barrett, Kirkup and Carey family make up my clan. Still have family there and love visiting when i can. Desperately trying to buy a Consett football club top. Thanks for the videos

That is a great comment Michael, I would have asked my father about your family had he still been alive, he possibly could have arranged the football club top too, as he was linked to the club for many years. I have not been back there since this was filmed although I will ask my sister if your family name means anything to her!

I remember Dixon Street. It was rather like two streets, so people living there had both the front entrance and the back entrance in Dixon Street. Half way down Blackhill Bank, near the park. That takes me back 45 years.

The cinema that burnt down was the Rex in 1967. The Jobcentre now stands on that site.

I can remember the neighbour coming round and telling my mother that it had burned down. My earliest memory is of being in the cinema and the seat kept coming up as my weight was not enough to keep it down.

Dave, my recollections are seeing the Wizard of Oz there. All I can remember was that I was not heavy enough to keep the seat down and apparently I ended up on my mother's knee. The next is a year or two later possibly when a neighbour came round to say that it was burned down and my mother asking me if I remembered being there. Throughout my time there I believed that the Rex was where I said it was here, so thanks for pointing this out!

09:10 The grey building used to be the abattoir. I did the rendering on the outside of the building around 2009, it was a big job as it was practically two streets worth of it. I think Elliot Hurd still owns the building.
