Return to Auschwitz | DW Documentary

Lea Roth, Peter Somogyi and Alex Spilberg were deported to Auschwitz when they were children. Their families were exterminated, but they survived. Together with their descendants, they return to the grounds of the infamous death camp.
All three of them attribute their survival to pure luck. Peter Somogyi, for example, had a twin brother, and was therefore interesting to the camp’s doctor, the infamous Josef Mengele, who conducted experiments on the twins. They all had to watch together as their families were sent to the gas chambers. It’s shocking to them that people still deny what transpired at Auschwitz. They want to encourage their children and grandchildren to take a stand when they encounter hate, exclusion and anti-Semitism. A report by Michaela Küfner.

I remember when i watched Sclinder's list with my girlfriend, she's Jews Polish and i'm Germany, after the movie was over, we didn't speak single word at that time, we just kept silent and went to drink tea, but on the way, she looked at me and I saw her tears, she held my hands and hugs me and said "Whatever has happened in the past I still love you". my heart broken instantly, I felt the wind like a thousand knives stabbing my chest.

It isnt for the children and ancestors to wear the guilt of the forefathers, it is for us to learn from there mistakes. We are not them and we were not alive when this happened, it is for us to build a better world than they left behind that is all ❤️🙏 as for the comment above, why wouldnt they watch it, it is the worlds history, it happened and why would the world sweep it under the carpet, the victims deserve to be remembered and deserve for the world to know there story, we watch movies and documentaries like these so we learn in the hope that it never happens again, we acknowledge the past and try to create a better future.

Two days ago I overheard an idiot telling his friend the Holocaust never really happened. I was infuriated and really wanted to hurt this man. I told him to look up videos like this one. I admire these survivors and I can’t even imagine their losses, what they endured and how they managed to lived with all these horrible memories. There have been so many other genocides that sadly the majority of the World are not aware of having occurred and the ones happening presently. Documentaries like this one should be shown in classrooms around the world

@Deslumbrado Far more than that. Civil servants, the political system, foreign countries that turned a blind eye to what was happening, companies that willingly used slave labor from the camps, as well as those companies that profited from the wider extermination effort (the companies that operated the trains, for example). Even the wider public that seemed to be indifferent to the persecution holds some blame.

I went to the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz as an independent visitor,I stood with others on the grounds of the former women's camp and watched the big screen which had been erected for us to watch the survivors etc in the tent over the Birkenau entrance...I cannot begin to tell you the overwhelming feelings of emotions that day and night we were there..we went there to honour the victims of the Holocaust and also the survivors...the entire experience of that day and the fact we met a survivor too was very emotionally overwhelming...you feel the heaviness of all the souls who were murdered and who perished there...when darkness fell and we made our way back over the Birkenau grounds after laying our candles at the memorial, you could only imagine what those poor souls went thru...it was fiercely bitterly cold that night, and we had many layers in,but those poor people had one layer of clothing if they were lucky..how any of them survived I will never know, they faced so much fear and terror everyday and night and on top suffered the effects of the freezing conditions....I feel honoured to have been allowed to b there that night of the 75th anniversary...I wanted to let the victims and the survivors know that I will NEVER FORGET and I will make sure the world NEVER FORGETS too what happened...soon there will b no survivors left to tell the world what happened in Auschwitz and throughout Europe during the Holocaust,so we will need to b their voices so that the world will NEVER FORGET

What?! Are you serious? Fascists murdered 27 millions of soviet people. Fascists burned the whole villages and towns with soviet women, children and the elderly, while their husbands and fathers were dying in war, saving all of Europe from the fascist regime. For instance, read about Khatyn massacre. And it is not the only one, oh no... On the top of that there were millions of Jewish and Polish, and many other people who were tortuted and murdered in this war. Soviet people (not only russians, but many other nationalities, for the record) tried to defend their families, their relatives and friends and their land...and not only the soviet lands, but also many other different countires. They tried to defend themselves from the ruthless fascist regime , which was fed by capitalists corporations. If you need one simple example, try to read at least Erich Maria Remarque's books such as "Spark of Life" or "The Black Obelisk". And by the way, he was german. Or try to watch at least "Schindler's list". Or try to read about "Lebensraum im Osten". And, maybe, just in case, you should read more history books and have critical thinking. By the way, I don't blame germans, I blame fascists and capitalists corporations. Try to read about overproduction crisises and why they always lead to wars. So, think about it.

So sorry for your family’s loss. I went to Auschwitz a few years ago. I’ve always been interested in the 2nd WW. I hadn’t realised that Auschwitz and Birkenau were separated by a couple of miles. Of course I recognised the Arbeit Macht Frei sign immediately. But when I saw the gate house at Birkenau my stomach flipped and I was almost sick. Our guide was really good. Her English was excellent and her narration, although very sad was clear and to the point. If people can visit they should do, it’s totally different than seeing it on TV in films. I have visited Terezinstadt and Sachsenhausen and awful as they are, it was Auschwitz that affected me the most. The sad part is, I look around the world today….and what have we learned. Since the two great wars there has been other conflicts, other genocides, and now the war in Europe. When will it end. (I try not to think about the ‘How it will end’) Peace and 🫶🏻 to everyone.

Whether it's the Holocaust, American slavery, or other atrocity ended by war, it's important to recognize that the day after the atrocities ended the perpetrators did not all at one time admit that what they were doing was wrong. It must take tremendous courage and strength to go back to to the concentration camps and relive the sounds and sights and the horrors years later. Unlike sympathetic visitors who go to tour the place.. The people who once spent their lives there must see it from an entirely different perspective. For them its back in time with the sounds and sights replaying again. My deepest, deepest sympathies and sorrow for the survivors and all those who died captive and helpless. And my deepest most vile curses to the nazis and their families for generations to come.

Can't even imagine the horrors they witnessed. I was in the 5th grade when my teacher began to teach us about the holocaust. I was horrified but my classmates either didn't understand or were ignorant. One of them, a class clown, decided to make a joke about the gas chambers which didn't end well because he ended up getting in so much trouble. Ever since then I've been very vocal about how how this has to be taught to future generations so they can understand how hatred can brew. And to make sure that this travesty is never forgotten.

The unspeakable acts done to them will be forever in their heads. Unthinkable how humans can treat one another without respect and without dignity. Such a world did and does still exist. One can only question, why ?
