Turn off checkbox "Shift+drag to extrude components" in Move Tool window - Smart Dublicate Settings. For Maya 2018-2019, I dont remember how it look in older versions.

ah, well... sadly was a false hope, for me at least. Oddly enough, it works when you set up the hotkey(s)... but restart maya (or a new projects) and it doesn't anymore. It was worth a try. I'm working on a more reliable version.

For what it's worth, here's the closest workaround that I made: - In the hotkey editor, set your hotkey for a custom mel script, a very very simple one, no worries. I set mine to CTRL+E - the script is a one command line, but I just added a temporary visual notice, "Edge Extrude", because visually nothing _seems_ to happen until you transform the new edge(s) inViewMessage -smg "Quick EdgeExtrude" -fade -pos topCenter; polyExtrudeEdge; that's it. Best usage is to activate the move tool first, since this hotkey/mel won't deactivate/change this. So you can just hotkey/extrude then move the edge(s), rince and repeat as you want. It's pretty fast that way, as you don't have the distracting extrusion UI popin' up. Hope this helps.
