Retroid Pocket 4 Pro | From the handheld maker I swore I'd never buy from again!

Ойындар

Back in 2020 I bought a Retroid Pocket 2 based off typical overly positive reviews on the internet, and I was sorely disappointed. So disappointed it lead (eventually) to the creation of this channel.
But fast forward a handful of years and I'm late to the party reviewing this... the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. And I love it!

I love this device! This thing runs pretty much everything you throw at it. Lately I've been using it for PS Vita emulation. I see the Odin 2 Mini will be releasing soon but I don't really see any need to upgrade with how well this device performs. The battery life is much better than I expected! It's really a nice pocketable and powerful device. Thanks for the video and good luck with your channel!

I agree no point in buying Odin2 mini for most emulation if you have a RP4Pro. Especially Vita emulation since it's still pretty ropey.

Its not as powerful as the Odin2, but for what emulation there is available right now then 4Pro can do most emulation and for native Android its a great little handheld. 👍

@@handheldgaming4life Given the state of seventh generation and above emulation, I'm good with the RP4 Pro. I'll freely admit that my Retroid Pocket Flip or my Retroid Pocket 3+ Metal edition(as nice a unit was and is) wasn't up to the task but the RP4 Pro kills it because Retroid straight up copied the Odin 2 😀👍. If I want a bigger screen, I'll game on my OneXplayer or my Abxylute One for game streaming. Android is too limited right now to make a huge investment in a Snapdragon Gen SOC besides, if I really want a taste of the Odin 2, I'll slap my Poco F5 into my Gamesir G8 controller and it's an instantly better experience than the Odin 2.

New to the world of emulation. Have this and ROG ally z1 extreme. Ps2 emulation really chugs on the 4 Pro, even on 0.5x native resolution-at least for the games I play. Any work around or is that the 4 pro's limits?

You have turned on the performance setting on the 4Pro right? I also tweak things like the render setting, most people just go right to Vulcan and always discount OpenGL which does make a difference in some games. Also work giving the performance setting EE Cycle rate and Skip a light underclock. Can be the difference between chugging and running well.

@@handheldgaming4life do I dare set up the 4 Pro again right now and try those settings... I think I might haha. Thanks, we'll see where we end up. The games I was referencing were Sims bustin out and burnout 3. For some reason, old games like sims are very GPU intensive

@@handheldgaming4life sadly to no avail. Underclocked ee cycle rate and even went down to max underclock with skip cycles. Sims was chugging even when entering the Sim’s name and burnout ran well for a few minutes after it adjusted but went back to chugging at the start of the next race. As much as I don’t want a $600 hole in my pocket, I think the rog is my best option for portable ps2 emulation currently 🥲

@@gebthabeb look up the 1.4-3060 apk version of aethersx2 and install that after uninstalling your previous versions (deactivate automatic updates on google play), for some reason later versions have worse performance in most games. Also in that specific version there is a setting under graphics called "enable threaded presentation" that if enabled is a game changer for the RP4P. Jak and Daxter went from inconsistent to perfectly playable even at 3x only on performance mode. Lastly, if you go to the individual game properties section (not the general one) under "advanced settings" -> "enable manual hardware fixes" -> "skip draw end" set to 1 made even Jak 2 perfectly playable at 2x res on high performance mode (mind you, I struggled running that damn game on a modern ryzen based PC). All of this is on version 1.4-3060 but I feel like it's difficult info to find, I had to compare various videos and sources but in the end the results were incredible. Maybe it still won't work with your games but you should definitely give it a shot

Could we see some vita3k emulation like everybody's golf world tour? Or some Metroid dread if it works

Switch emulation will be fine. Vita3K is sadly still very flakey. I rarely find a game that plays well or runs without crashing at some point.

@@handheldgaming4life I've seen a few where the games have worked. I was just wondering if you were ever planning to test vita3k on it, and if you were I was wondering if youd test that game. I'd do it myself, but I'm waiting on a rp4 pro currently and my 2 weeks are only partially up lol

It can emulate Super Mario Bros. Wonder at nearly constant 60 fps and it's pocketable. No other hand held on the market can do that.

I like the pocket-able clarification. 😁 I mean if you wear cargo pants you could pocket the Odin2. 😂 But yeah I agree the little 4 Pro is very portable and its powerful for its dinky little size. 👌

Yeah I'd heard triggers were a weak point. So far mine have been good. Much weaker springs on them than say the RG556 but other than that they feel pretty good. Screen is a weird one, the colour is ok now they've rolled out a firmware update. But they left in the colour settings options in Android and tweaking those only makes the screen look gross and washed out. Other than that though the screen really is decent. Especially given it's not full HD but you'd not notice in use.

@@wongbryson that's a really tough question to answer. They are both Android handhelds, they are so similar but so different. As of this week I'd say the 4Pro is my favourite right now. But depending on the circumstances I could just as easily say the 556 is my favourite too. For the whole package it's got to be the 4Pro but the 556 is a very close 2nd.
