My HERO. No one will ever play like Oscar.
Oscar was so cool. I love his music so much and the fact he was a fellow Canadian makes me always proud of my country. Glenn Gould is another giant that makes us proud.
OK, you don't expect an intelligent interviewer on mainstream TV, but it's great to hear someone of Oscar's stature in his own words.
Thanks for the upload.
Thank-you for the clarification. Excellent insight.
SMH! Gotta love him.
Not for nothin' but "Gorilla" is sometimes used as a term of endearment, that is, when someone is outrageously great and no one can touch him in skill, he's a "Gorilla". So I can see Osc The Gorilla was certainly a term of endearment. But the Interviewer may have Known that "Gorilla" is like "Monster" on the piano. In any case, it was kind of cute and definitely did not offend the great Oscar.

Plus she's female and we women don't compliment folk that way. OP said he weighed 270 lbs. Wow! At 6'2" or 6'3" he was a big man and that's a great thing😍!
@MrSunflare 1)Oscar put his hand to his eyes Before Interviewer mentions Ellington. 2) Basie called him "Osc the Gorilla", not Interviewer; 3) Gorilla, Monster, Beast, are terms of Prestige by peers. It was he, Oscar, who plays straight man: "Why do you understand the 2nd one?" and laughs, seeing most likely the "double entendre"; 4) Interviewer does not understand "maharaja" because that's not American but "gorilla" is. 5) Oscar re Ellington says "elegant, don't know if you knew this or not".
Wait, is that Anna Maria Tremonti?

No, this is way back time - it's Hannah Gartner
The interviewer wouldn't fit in to the jazz clubs, especially in Las Vegas. Regardless,Oscar was a great man who had so much patience. He loved to pass his knowledge on to musicians. Too many musicians only focus on promoting their own works and not giving insight to the musical genre.
Unfortunately, Oscar had terrible eating habits.
