Retro Games I Played in 2023

Ойындар

Last year, I did my best to go back to the past and knock out some retro games off my backlog, as well as just revisit some absolute classics. Let's talk about what I played!

Fun fact: Voodoo Vince was actually NOT backwards compatible on Xbox 360 because of some custom code. This is probably why the remaster exists.

Just to note about Ghost in the Shell: there's three separate continuities (four if you count the manga, as none of the adaptations translate the manga 1:1 like most anime do, five if you count the live-action movie). 1) Movie continuity - Consists of the original 1995 movie and Innocence. 2) Stand Alone Complex - Originally consisted of one season, but it got a second season, 2nd GIG. Then got a movie sequel, Solid State Society. A few years ago, there was a revival called SAC_2045. This is what's essentially the "main" anime continuity for most folks, as the first two seasons aired on Adult Swim (who have permanent broadcast rights) back in the 00's. 3) Arise - Consists of four OVAs and a movie. Is technically a prequel, but not in continuity with either the original movies or SAC.

Antdude, if you want to see a game that jumps massively in quality in a package of game 1 & 2, find the GBA combo pack for Legacy of Goku 1 & 2. Legit, Legacy of Goku 1 is considered one of the worst GBA games and Legacy of Goku 2 is considered one of the best GBA games. It's incredible how good 2 is. Just... if you want to play 1, remember the immortality glitch by flying and letting yourself get hit by a ki blast (flying again cancels it), it will save you a lot of trouble, and use guides as needed. 2 doesn't need any glitches as it's virtually the perfect DragonBall game for that style of Beat em Up RPG.

Ghost in the Shell the manga from the early 90s, has just 1 volume, a side-story book and a sequel book; but the game and the original 95 movie both draw from the manga in different ways, which would probably make them feel incongruous with one-another. The film also has a sequel that breaks even further from the manga's story. The Stand Alone Complex series (2 seasons and a movie) is another whole different take on the story drawing from the manga in its own way, but is easily the most-complete-feeling version of the story, even compared to the manga. Everything that's come after that is yet another take but nothing has hit like SAC.

Ah, retro games. With the Wii U eshop closing last year, I had bought a lot of virtual console games on it, so I was playing quite a few of them. Though I did play other games too. Replayed Super Mario Advance 2, that was nostalgic. Continued trying out Metroid games, I really enjoyed Fusion and Super. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, still love that game. Actually tried out my first Smup with Lords of Thunder, that one was fun. Actually played all 3 crash n sane trilogy games, that was fun. Had that on my PS5 for a while, finally beat it I really need to get back to P4G and finish it. I’m in November. The original Devil May Cry, that was fun to go back to. I finally got through the original Kid Icarus games! Felt so good, and I had a lot of fun. Finally got to beating Spyro 3 from the reignited trilogy, after needing a break from beating 1 and 2 so close to each other. I still prefer 2, but 3 was a blast. I actually got a decent price on a copy of Pokémon Black, so I finally got to play through that classic. And quite a few others. Played more retro games than the actual new games that came out XD.

From the cheesy story, to the out dated time travel system, the town building, the massive weapon upgrade tree, and even the level to level gameplay loop of clearing a stage of hazards before playing a hole of golf in it is all just so fun to me. I know other people hated spheda (golf) but its the part of the game I look forward to most on replays. Anyway I would love to hear what someone that never played it back in the day has to say about it. It's on the ps store with trophies too.

Bugs Bunny Lost In Time and Duck Dodgers were childhood games of mine. Really liked them both. Wasn't all that into Sheep Raider and Time Busters though. My main "retro" gaming project of 2023 was playing through all 9 of the Professor Layton games - the original trilogy, the prequel trilogy, the Ace Attorney crossover, the mobile game, and Katrielle (Switch version) - in advance of the new game coming out now in 2025. I had actually only ever played Curious Village and Diabolical Box back when they came out ~15 years ago so it was nice to finally clear through the entire series in the span of one year. I also cleared Trace Memory/Another Code on DS for the first time in advance of the just released remake collection. In the remake I've finished the first game and will be starting the second game next time I pick it up.

For last year's Retro Games I played, I played all the main entry Kirby games. It was something that was on my bucket list for a while. So I was, heck with it, and spent the last 6 months, from July to December, playing Kirby games. The older games were very interesting to play, especially on the 3DS before the stores closed. Definitely had to use some of the NSO functions for Dream Land 3. I find that game's collectable to be a pain. Now I see why the DS games were a rough time in Kirby's history. Since the Kirby games that were released on the Switch still felt fresh in my mind, I ended it with the 3DS games. Planet Robobot still holds up to this day (just not my 3DS to PR's graphics sometimes, the frame rate was bad in certain sections). While this was a short brief on what I did, I had fun doing it. There was never a bad Kirby game from what I played in the mainline as the series has this nice condensed amount of games released over 30 years of Kirby. It was a fun time.... now I got my own backlog of games to deal with.

Random N64 recommendation: Robotron 64. It’s a sequel to the twin stick shooter Robotron, but it’s in 3D, it’s hyper colorful, and the music is intense EDM rave music. It is one of the few N64 games that allows duel wielding N64 controllers, which is fun. It also allows for a single controller play as well. It’s super simple, really easy to pick up and play, and you’ll find yourself just waiting one more level. Check it out.

Intriguing. I love the original and have played a lot of N64 games, but missed this one.

I played Another Code: R a few months before they announced Recollection. Weird timing!

I played A Link to the Past for the first time. Some of the puzzles were really cryptic and I had this jank problem where enemies would get stuck in Link dealing constant damage. I needed someone to help me get the silver arrows to beat Ganon since I had no idea I needed them nor did I know they existed. I wish I enjoyed it more than I did. Going to play Metroid Fusion this year. Hope I like that one more since I loved Super and Dread.

Yume penguin monogatari was for the famicom disk system, right? The switch actuslly received quite a bunch of ports and remakes from the fds, but that one and the other where you play as a baby are the ones I wanted to get.

Who the hell is saying the Battle Network series can be played in any order? Thats… blatantly false lol. There is a clear chronological order to the story that the games follow

I played Pikmin 1 and 2 after enjoying 4, and I plan on getting to 3 eventually. I also played Dragon Quest 1 and 2, and I'm making my way through 3 currently.

I mostly play retro games, so listing them out here would be quite the list. However, I have one in particular that i want to share - Fireball for the Atari 2600. I had never heard of it prior to this past year and it really impressed me. A breakout clone, yes, but one with a difficult-to-master mechanic of juggling the balls. A really creative but very hard game!

In megaman battle network 3 things rev up hard-core at the end of the n1 grand prix and the post-game is awesome.

I had no idea the Battle Network games were better after one, I remember playing the first one and hating it and never picked up any after cuz I thought they would all be the same.
