Retro Dissipator- AR-15 Dissipator Pt. 3 - Should You Buy or Build your AR?
In this video I cover a popular but overlooked topic of should you buy or build your AR. I also review my favorite AR-15 of all time and walk through the build process.

When I built my Dissipator, I used a PSA 20" FSB A2 barrel. I stripped them FSb off the barrel and sent it to J. Thomas at Retro Arms Works. He cut it down to 16" threaded, crowned , drilled the gas port to the right spec, added Borwnells Retro Furniture (I used the brown color) and WaLa! 604 Dissipator. looks and shoots great!

That was one of the top forum recommendations for building one correctly.
Midlength gas and rifle-length buffer makes for a sweet shooter. Also, thank you for telling the difference between a Dissipator and a 605. Best, JBR

I built my first 3 ARs, age 17-19. Basically 1 rifle a year. They all run like champions, 1 of them was an 80% and one was from scratch. I also consumed about a case of monster when deciding to buy and assemble each rifle. #4 will hopefully be an MCR. (Idk why doing an AR * “ build “ a year has become a habit of mine. But they’re cheap and I turn 20 in 8 months~ so another one seems fitting. ) Is building none your first time recommended? Not really, is an 80% recommended your first time? Not at all. Being familiar with the platform before you buy it is. Go shoot a buddies or multiple before picking one. I have many rifles cause I didn’t know what I really wanted the first time round. *legos use the word so it counts

Can someone pick just one rifle? It’s too difficult!
Windham weaponry makes dissipator uppers with retro furniture but they have carbine gas systems underneath, which is cringe af lol. If you're picky like me and want to build things EXACTLY how you imagine them, you're gonna need to build it. For anyone looking to build AR's, i highly recommend School of the American Rifle. Chad is a master gunsmith specializing in the AR-15 platform. You'll learn a hell of a lot of nuance about how the AR-15 platform function. Its like drinking from a firehose.
I’m working on a dissipator of my own but I’m building the North Hollywood version.

I built the dissipator using a delton heavy barrel. I had cycling issues and had to get a light weight bcg and put a Flaming pig type flash hider/compensate on the end of the barrel before I could obtain 100% reliability. Once I achieved reliability the rifle turned out to be a real tack driver and very smooth with no recoil using 55g 556 ammo. I did use a a2 stock, can't remember what spring and buffer I used right off. Anyway the rifle literally shoots bullseye at 100 yards resting on a bag with open sights. I can't see the bullseye much after 100 yards so my practical accuracy is limited to 100 yards unless I put some glass on it but I think I might go with a acog on another build and leave this rifle as it is.
Yes absolutely
Pinned gas block is the way to go.
I bought a dissipator upper and BCG from PSA and my lower was built using an Anderson Arms lower receiver assembled with a GI parts kit by a local gun store. I added an a2 stock and a CMMG carry handle with rear sight. I just had to put the major subassemblies together, and tadaaaaaaa! Oh, and I bought a 5-pack of 20 round straight mags because reasons.

Built Mine using a legit 16” barrel with rifle length gas from spinta precision. Tossed a JP rifles adjustable fsb gas block on it because port on the barrel is HUGE! obviously it needs to be for lack of dwell time. But it runs beautifully with an a1 stock springco green spring and rifle buffer.

@redbarronreviews2429

Thank you. I have and haven’t had any issues. From the several builds I have done stags parts are much denser or heavier as well as being phosphated. They’re noticeably higher quality. I’m sure there are some boutique companies that might make better, but for a standard production company I have yet to find better than stag on the small parts. I have also found stag small parts handle higher pressure ammo better than others although you shouldn’t shoot higher pressure stuff through an AR.

What did you use in the gas tube hole to secure the handguard cap.
@redbarronreviews2429

It’s not secure. It just hangs there loose. When the handguard is in it, it stays in place just from the pressure of the slip ring or I’d have to tac it in place.

Hey I just wanted to throw some information Del Ton sells a rifle gas length dissipator barrel assembly, and complete upper. I have one ordered a post up any more particular information on it when I get it. I do think their barrels are phosphate coated but not chrome-lined. But seriously with the quality we have in the AR-15 community few of us will live long enough to burn out our barrels. At the usual how often do we shoot our guns rates. So for me phosphate is not really an issue.

I may even upgrade it A1 standard. I have a fixed handle upper receiver here. But also have to get triangle handguards.
New to the AR platform? Buy a factory rifle. Shoot it as is, see what you like and don't like, change as needed. 2nd rifle, once you know how an AR should run, and you know what parts you prefer, build it.
hello red barron were can i get a pencil profile barrel with and a2 front sight post I look all over the PSA WEBSITE its there something you added can you tell me wich one to buy thanks

I got their pencil profile midlength gas barrel. The gunsmith and I made a shim to go between the barrel and the front sight block to make it work. To my knowledge there isn’t a barrel already like this out of the box. I wish there was, it’s a great set up.
Any tip to align the FSB to the rear sight using basic tools?

Depends on the PSA daily deals. Sometimes it’s cheaper to split it up, other times it’s not. I just bought a lower build kit and lower for $130 last week. If you want a bomb proof lower what I do is buy a PSA $30 blem lower, then purchase a rock river arms national match trigger, stag lower parts kit and add whatever I want for stock and grip. You can’t beat the durability and I think it’s still sub 300.

@@redbarronreviews2429 that’s not bad at all. The only reason I ask is I’ve been building my first AR and I got my lower complete from PSA for $99. Must have just happened upon a fantastic deal. The lowest I’ve seen stripped lowers since then is $49

I also wanted to mention, one of my rifles is a mid, on the KE Arms polymer lower. So carbine buffer, on mid length gas, with AR Stoner linear comp on a 16 in melonited midway barrel. Works very well, my 2 nd AR build, no problems runs good. The comp does blow the blast and part of the sound away from the shooter as advertised. My first rifle, is essentially an A1 upper if a 16 in carbine was ever made. No lights, no scopes. Sitting on another KE Arms lower. Both were initially built with Aero lowers assembled by me. No knock on Aero here, I am near fanboy status on their parts. I also have their 9mm EPC carbine w/16 in barrel. Rock solid reliable, built (assembled) by me
Can someone explain why no company sells a retro dissipator with a a1 or a2 upper. It would sell like hotcakes.

just curious by why do you always use that tiny magazine in your ar? seems like your always running that wee mag, no biggie, im just curious if theres standard capacity mags out there why run a baby mag? just a morbid curiosity of mine. oh, and please remove the intro. intros are pointless and stupid. thank you have a great week. the term "cheap" gets tossed around alot as tho your are refferencing something of lesser quality or in a derogatory manner. i do agree that there certainly are some crummie companies out there. those who absolutely put out shitty parts. however some of these "cheap" or "budget" companies would absolutely NOT still be arounf if they didnt work. plain and simple. i will be straight up honest..... i have a daniel defense, and a knights armament, which i would consider upper tier guns. as well as some bear creek arsenals and some palmetto states guns, and in all honesty ive had less issues in all my "cheap" guns than i have had in my pricey guns. truly. yes theres a noticable difference if you get way down and dirty and start sniffing at the finite details you can locate differences. mostly in fitment. but as far as shooting theres absolutely no difference in accuracy or dependability. dont let the gun snobs fool you. and get over yourself, save those pennies and get you a cheaper gun. i could have got 5 bear creek complete rifles for the price of my knights.

I love the 20 round mags. they don’t hang up on things behind the seat of my truck when I take the rifle in and out of it or when it’s in the bed of the UTV and I’m trying to take it out I don’t have to fight feed bags, bailing wire, and ring tops as much. The 30 rounders get hung up more often. Depending on the sling length and type of sling the longer mags get in the way to. They’re also perfect to toss in a back pocket. Lastly I prefer the look, something about the 20 round mag is just classic. I don’t exclusively run these, but more often then not if I’m plinking or shooting I like using 20 rounders and in truck gun applications. True on the cheap part. I’ve had pretty good luck with the budget stuff. On a more duty related firearm I generally will go with a higher end BCG and use stag small parts, but for everything else I’m right on board with you. The only reason I gravitate towards replacing the small parts and BCGs is I’ve seen a lot of issues out of radicals, rugers, and core rifles when I worked at a gun shop. Nothing crazy, but generally bolt catches would break or when we’d send the rifles to manufactures they’d come back with new BCGs. I’ve never had an issues out of my PSA ARs but I still get paranoid about it. I’ve got a buddy with a bear creek who loves it and shoots it a lot.
