Retro-Bit Sega Saturn 2.4Ghz Wireless Pro Controller: Amazon Product Unboxing, Testing and Review

Ойындар

I take a hands on look at the new Sega Saturn Pro Controller by Retro-Bit, which has been out for a little while in the US but only arrived in the UK on the 30th of January. I unbox and play test the new controller on both an original Sega Saturn console and Windows PC, comparing it against the original Saturn digital and 3D controllers on Saturn and explore the other options available if you're into PC gaming.
The video shows a major problem that I encountered while testing the controller, and how to fix it.
As always my review videos are real world conditions. No lab testing, no graphs and charts, just my genuine discovery and real testing of the product.

The dog is called Storm (although technically after Storm from the X-men) but it was too good an opportunity to miss.

Very thorough review! Thanks for the heads-up about PC compatibility. I'm considering getting this as a wireless controller for my Saturn.

I have this controller and the main issue I have is that L and R in either mode do not act as L and R on a Sega Saturn. You have to use ZL and ZR.

Appreciate the depth you went into concerning its usability in and out of gameplay. I was really tempted to get this for my PC, I really enjoyed using one of the new-ish usb genesis controllers for certain indie games (mainly 2d side scrollers.. Even rocket league haha) so I thought adding triggers and analog sticks would have expanded the games I could play. Glad I held off as I would've been conflicted with the triggers.

Yes it was a bit of a surprise that. I know the digital Model 2 pad it’s based on didn’t have analogue triggers, but if it’s trying to replicate the 3D controller which did have then it seems a little bit of a job half done.

just to give an update, they finally released the firmware for the USB receiver last night here in the US. For those that had a faulty USB or other issues, it will be very handy.

Glad I didn't get one it should be plug and play on release. These companies need to do more testing before putting it out.

A good use case for PC would be to play 2D fighting games - since L and R buttons are pretty awful to use for punches and kicks, and people have always enjoyed the Saturn dpad.

Yeah, when it comes to a choice I’ve always preferred MegaDrive and Saturn for my 2D fighters for that very reason. The 6-button layout of the pads is so much better for fighting games.

You can use the analog sticks! I figured it out, at least with using Mednafen as an emulator. All you have to do is plug in the controller and launch a game. I used Nights. When the game starts press alt+shift and then press the number 1 on the keyboard. You can then map the controller. It maps all buttons, analog stick and a button for selecting analog mode. In the game press the button you used for selecting analog mode, I used select on the controller, and you can then use the analog stick. I did also update the firmware to the latest version.

Hello, I was looking for reviews of this, and found yours, and as you wondered about it much, I'll expose my own use case: I have this Surface Go3 tablet which is essentially a portable retro emulation platform, like on vacation, or plane/train. I want to be able to play games, be it Saturn, Megadrive, with the original control scheme, and also possibly whichever of my Steam games that could work on it. On my desktop PC, my default controller is a Hori EX2 Turbo, to fulfill that very need. If Hori's OCTA controller had dual analogs, I'd be using just that instead. As of now I had 2xSN30 Pro to go with this tablet, and since purchase, I'd always told myself if there ever was a rather flat (to fit within the case) 6-button layout controller with dual analogs, I'd go for it in a heartbeat. Because a game like Vampire Hunter, or even the SNES's Street Fighter 2 is a pain with the generic 4+2/4, same for Saturn games (and Megadrive, to a lesser degree). So this is right up my alley! The only thing I'm miffed about is their 2.4Ghz USB scheme instead of having both that and BT. That's definitely a bit niche, although generally I would rather have only 6 buttons layouts, be it desktop or tablet, or whatever else: the 6 buttons layout works well with 4 buttons schemes, not the other way around, simple as that. Additionally, I also don't understand why they've not aligned the size of the upper face buttons (XYZ) and the lower ones (ABC), as that's the original flaw of this controller, but that's just a mild issue. Still, I'm feeling well-inclined towards buying a pair of these controllers. Hopefully, they'll eventually finetune the design . Thanks for the review!

I get mine tomorrow. I'll look into the "3D Mode" for PC with the analog sticks. I have a theroy on getting it to work in with X-input mode. I'll report back on what I figure out.

Hi, I'm sorry if you're unhappy with the content of the channel, but I do say in my bio that it's both a review channel and a gaming channel. My gaming videos hugely outnumber my review videos, only 47 reviews to 354 gaming videos so I'd hardly say I'm a fake gaming channel. You may have noticed a lot of review videos recently because, ironically, I spent most of the first half of this year producing gaming videos and I've gotten a little behind on product reviews. I'm nearly caught up, just one more due to go out in the next couple of days, and then I'll be finishing off the first in a line of my biggest gaming videos yet. I spent a week in Atlanta in May as a result of sim racing and I'll be back out there in October for more. Between now and then I've got something absolutely huge coming which I can't wait to share, and will explain why I've not done any sim racing videos for a while.

I think they tried to satisfy lots of people at once. In fairness, although I’ve owned one for 25+ years I never really liked the original 3D controller. And since this review I’ve used the RetroBit controller a lot. It’s not perfect, and the 3D sticks are a bit too small, but it’s become my default pad for Saturn and MegaDrive games.

For driving games on the Sega Saturn itself - can acceleration and breaking be remapped to the back shoulder trigger buttons? Or do we have no choice but to use the front row set of shoulder trigger buttons?

  • @ToughMonkey

    @ToughMonkey

    5 ай бұрын

There’s not much scope for re-mapping buttons on the Saturn itself. You can do that on the PC for, say, RetroArch, but on the Saturn you’re kind of stuck with whatever the console detects it as and defaults to. Via a combination of buttons paired with pressing Start, you can get the controller to flip things around, but only on PC over the USB receiver. The only thing that you might get lucky with is if the Saturn is picking up the back shoulder buttons as maybe B + C and you get an in-game option to change buttons so B + C are throttle and brake….but I’ve not seen that yet.

Great video! I wonder if the newer stock of the Retro-Bit SEGA Saturn 2.4GHz Wireless Pro Controllers will by default have the corrected firmware update pre-installed? I hope so. Downloading and installing firmware for controllers is annoying.

I expect there will come a point when controller that were manufactured after the update was released will all have the new firmware installed before dispatch, but I’d imagine it’d be some time before the first-run units are sold off.

Do you know if all the Saturn Pro Controllers come incorrectly bundled with the USB-C-to-USA-A cable? or do some actually come with the accurate required Micro-USB-to-USA-A cable? I ask this because as you pointed out in the video - the port on the actual Saturn Pro Controller itself is Micro USB, so it's the Micro-USB-to-USA-A cable that we need, NOT the USB-C-to-USA-A cable.
