Retractable Bench Wheels

This is my solution to the problem of having only one workshop but requiring it to do a number of things.
Bought the trampoline springs from Amazon, the castors from EBay and the hinges were from Screwfix. The rest I just had laying around.

Clever designs are simple designs 👍🏼 This is the simplest I’ve seen that ticks all the boxes, after months of on and off searching for it. I think I’m gonna make one today 😊 thank you so much!

Been looking to find a design that is better than my ideas, to work as a concealed facility in a set of drawers. Decided you win, idea is to set them up so that lowest draw must be removed, then access to lever is available. When retracted all sides of the drawers are on the ground. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing!. I think this is the best solution I've seen so far. I'll be use this system or one just like it on the bench I'm making for myself.

It would really help if you would tell how much and what direction the offset from the hole to the intersection point would be.

I am sure it can be scaled up to match the weight of the bench. The weakest point is likely to be the pivot bolt for the handle.

I use a 6'5 teak bench, what size wheels should I choose?

The 75mm ones I used are fairly heavy duty and should be ok for your application. It depends on the weight. I used 75mm because of the distance below the transom. Check out their capacity ahead of purchase.

@@gardenshedprojects6888 I was wondering to myself, they look nice and flexible compared to the few springs I salvaged from a garden trampoline. Those I have are not tapered on the ends, and are extremely stiff with no travel. Carl Holmgren has used this, and has some more designs which are worth a look.

If it works for you, great. I have found it makes the bench a bit unstable if you need to give something a bit of welly (hit it hard with a hammer)😀

Or spend £45 and buy a set of heavy duty retractable castors from Amazon. Time is money and doing all this easily outweighs £45

    1. Where's the fun in that? 2. Yes, if you like tripping over things or stubbing your toes. 3. Can't reach the back ones if you slide your bench between items up to a wall. 4. Where's YOUR video?

Another horrible "solution" which will leave the wheels in the way when not being used.
