Retouch4Me Automatic Retouching Plug-ins - Edit portraits while you SLEEP

In this video I discuss the Automatic retouching plug-ins from retouch4me. These plug-ins add retouching power to photoshop, lightroom, and captureOne. The plug-ins discussed in this video are Dodge & Burn, Eye Vessels, Heal, Portrait Volumes, Clean Backdrop, Skin Tone, and White Teeth.
Heal reduces and eliminates blemishes
Dodge & Burn works as a micro D/B utility to help blend small variances in skin luminosity.
White Teeth desaturates and brightens teeth
Skin Tone unifies hue variance in skin
Portrait volumes adds shape and dimension by increasing contrast, similar to a global/macro D&B workflow.
Clean Backdrop can remove debris and reduce luminosity variance on seamless backdrops.
Eye Vessels removes red veins in the whites of the eyes

    Since posting this video I’ve continued using Retouch4Me, and I’ve logged the jobs I’ve used it on, and did “ballpark” estimates of how much time it saved me, including subtracting the time I’ve spent correcting things I didn’t want removed). 252 hours saved, 70% of which is used for the assignment, 30% of which was elevating quality of delivered images despite there being no retouching expectation. That’s roughly 175 hours of billed post-processing taken off my hands. Multiplying my rate x 350 to estimate how much it generates in a year, well…it’s a LOT more than the $800 that the plugins cost. As I said in the video, I understand the cost being high for those that are not generating much income from photography. But if you’re full-time and this level of editing/retouching is a large part of your work flow, it’s a no-brainer.

    *Important Update* Oleg, the developer, commented below that the Dodge & Burn and Heal plugins have both been updated since the version I used in this video (which is the same that I've used since March). They stated that the updates now utilize GPU and run much faster than original version. I got home, downloaded the updates and compared them using the same image and it made a MASSIVE difference. Dodge & Burn (High Resolution) went from 3.5 minutes to 1 minute. Dodge & Burn (HR off) went from 55 seconds to 27 seconds. Heal (High Resolution) went from 54 seconds to 6 seconds (90% less time!) Heal (HR off) went from 11 seconds to 3 seconds It's worth noting that with the update using your GPU, it should be faster for everyone, but the better your GPU the faster performance you'll see. I have an RTX 3060 Ti for reference. The previous version ran at 100% cpu utilization for 4 minutes, but after the update my cpu utilization was under 20% for the minute it took. On top of that my GPU only ran around 28%. These utilization drops make it a far better experience to use the computer on other tasks while Retouch4Me batch processes. I also want to commend the developer Oleg here. When Oleg first reached out back in the spring, there were only 3 utilities. Now there's 7, and there's been significant performance improvement on the two most important ones. It sounds like Oleg is currently trying to get another D&B update to run even faster, and will work on the Backdrop cleaning utility. This is a ton of progress in such a short period of time. Meanwhile Adobe still has the same Lightroom inadequacies as 4 years ago.

    Having an issue with the plugins. I enjoy the software. I think the heal plug-in is pretty helpful. I'm having a major issue with it though. It seems to crash randomly whether you use the software or the plug-in version. I have tried many different things to troubleshoot this from deleting registry files to completely uninstalling the programs or disabling the graphics card. It seems nothing is working. At this point I don't know if it is simply a plug-in issue or something else. If anyone has had similar experiences and knows the fix I would greatly appreciate it.

    Nice but at around $1000 for the total package it's a bit pricey when I still have to go in and retouch it's mistakes. And I only edit the shots I love not all of them. So having it spend the time to edit all of them and then I pick which ones to do final edits too is a lil much. I'd rather just pick the premium shots and edit them myself. Or send them out to be edited by a editor. Not saying it isn't a technology I won't use in the future. But it still has a ways to go to be polished well enough.

  • @mverick160

    @mverick160

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@robhallphoto I guess that's kinda where I was heading. So if the shots are culled first. How many are you editing to provide to a client? I can knock through 20 to finished in a half hour pretty easy. And then they're done. Don't need to be gone over again. Then the client choses if they want signature edits. If it's for a recital with 100 kids. Not sure I'd even want to chose and put up anything edited for parents to order. A lot just copy and past with the name over it and then remove it in a post program themselves. I'd rather have them order the base print and then pay to be edited up. But that's not my workflow. And that's one of the reasons why. I guess where I'm heading is the only edits I'd want are finished edits. If I still have to go back through them all anyway to catch what it doesn't catch. I'm still going over the pics with a fine tooth comb anyway. If it did everything and all I had to do was signature edits. Now that would be worth $1000. If it was around $200 to run through all of it I might be interested and it did it all in one whack. But Capture one doesn't cost this much and It's a whole lot more programing then this is. I mean seriously. Just selling the teeth whitening by itself? Who in the world would just buy a single package. Either buy it all or nothing. And as such should be priced as a package. Breaking it up was done only to drive the price WAY up. By the way. Glad you're back I was wondering what happened to you. And I agree, taking me time with the wife is a good thing. Hope everything is going great for you.

Latest versions run on GPU and work much faster, especially on such a beasts like RTX3060! Also, for close-up portraits, heal and d&b could benefit from low-resolution mode cause in this case plug-ins can detect larger spots. @@agorka I've been playing around with the demo versions on photos of a senior with bad acne. If I use high resolution mode with "Heal" it barely does anything even with sensitivity at 100. I have to use low resolution mode to make a big dent, however there are still some large, obvious pimples that it misses. I'd say it gets like 2/3 of the blemishes in low res mode and maybe 1/5 in high res. It seems like there should be a way to go even higher with the sensitivity for subjects like this. Also, I've had weird stuff happening with the interface, like the buttons on the left sometimes don't show up when I launch the filter in PS, and sometimes they don't work or I have to click my mouse more slowly (hold it down for a second before letting up) for them to register. Also the skin tone filter changed the colors of lips on the photos I tried it on, even though it's not supposed to.

I offer you to think another way: you can try one, which suits your workflow the most, it can be heal, d&b or clean backdrop. I'm sure it will save you the money you spent in a few days, usually a few hours spent on shooting instead of retouching is enough to cover the money spent on the plug-in. People tell me that they booked twice as many shootings comparing to the previous year just because they don't need to spend that much time on retouching. Sorry for the long reply =)

    I just dove in, because I want to make sure the things I recommend hold up to competition. For whatever reason with .dng files Luminar would not work, they displayed awkwardly in all modes (as shown in the link above). I didn’t even seek to resolve this and instead made jpegs to test the options. Yes, there are options from Retouch4me that are similar in Luminar AI. Luminar’s skin defects removal is similar to Retouch4me Heal option, but has no control from what I can tell and only did a fair job (on a non freckled person). Then Luminar has the “amount” slider for general skin softening, which one might call similar to Retouch4me Dodge and Burn. However the result: Not. Even. Close. Luminar AI suffers from the same thing that has plagued automatic skin plugins forever. It’s applying reductions in clarity/contrast via what looks like color masks. So hair around the face is affected by softening slider. Clothing with warm tones affected by softening slider. Nostrils - affected by the softening slider. Teeth whitener - again brightens all the gums and parts of the lip due to a lack of quality masking. Eye brightener does whiten the eyes, but doesn’t resolve vessels (unless you just brighten the eyes to an unrealistic level) None of this to say Luminar isn’t good,m. For a one time cost of $50 it has a ton of excellent options. But it took 60 seconds to see that it’s using feathered masks that leave effects bleeding into unwanted areas, just as soft brushes and radial filters would do in Lightroom. I don’t think Luminar produces anywhere near the results of Retouch4me in comparable categories. I’ve seen Nero teased though and it’s marketed as a substantial improvement so I’ll check that out once released! I’d be curious to hear what you thought of R4M if you used a trial version and went head to head with the results you get in Luminar.
