Retiring Retirement: A Personal Upgrade for the 3rd/3rd: Jan Allen at TEDxColumbus

When she first fully felt -- as her 60th birthday neared -- that the time already lived was longer than the time left, Jan Allen plunged into despair. Utilizing her expertise and interest in life transitions, she learned that we're living a new, 21st century reality -- much longer lives but with an outdated operating system for this new life stage; one that limits choice and was never meant to last for 30 years. She'll propose a new guiding question and construct to help us think about this "new third" of our lives. (Jan was selected by the judges at our Open Call Auditions on August 16).

So well presented as Jan told us of her feelings. I experienced some sadness when it appeared Jan felt that death IS the end when, I'm fully convinced it's just one more - the biggest in our lives actually - transition. I "retired" at 59 and am still going strong at 86...87 in a few days. Jan was right and is right: Growth, purpose, and connection: lifelong learning for the purpose of helping others; being the love that we are, and being a conduit for it.

"I will not die before I'm dead." There's about $100,000 worth of psychotherapy toward managing "the final third." Bravo!

I am 54 , single and need to figure out what is next. Retiring in 6 years ...biggest reason I can't go now is healthcare . Our costs and system make it the biggest factor in planning.

keep your income low and use ACA for cheap insurance...many say its only a few hundred dollars per month.... id never keep working for a few hundred dollars per month if youre ready to retire and have the money ....the next 5 years of your life will be the healthiest you have before you die... life is not guaranteed , live it while you can

Dang.... im the only one. I Hate that I retired!! I couldn't return, and i stressed out horribly. I got anxiety, insomnia,...and severe depression. I have Guilt, and resentment. I nolonger have any motivation, desire to do anything. I lost interest in all of my hobbies , activities and sports. I have no desire go anywhere. I don't like living anymore, my mental and physical health are declining... im very unhappy, negative, and suffer all day!,

wow, when I started working, my new coworkers were 5-15 years my senior, some were about to retire. When I started working again in a different part of the company I was 5-10 years older than the rest.
