I'm a 48-year-old doctor feeling burnt out from long hours and stress. I've never invested in a retirement portfolio because I've always believed the economy would collapse eventually. However, I plan to retire soon and I'm curious: If you had $100k to invest safely in stocks over 4-5 years to grow, how would you start?

My success was largely based off of a single, simple approach (portfolio Management) but remember, investing is a journey, not a sprint - take your time, stay patient, and stay focused on your long-term goals.

At the end of the day, there's no one particular way of bridging that gap. but starting to save early and investing in the financial markets can never go wrong. if I were to start over in 2024 with less than $50k I would still use the portfolio management play-book.

Josh, I just so happen to be the exact person who needed to hear this today . I will be retiring in the 2nd quarter of 2026-just at that 2 year mark. This week I had decided to move 25% of my 401k and 403b retirement accounts into money market, because I think we are overdue for stock market correction AND I’ve worked too hard for 35+ years to lose my portfolio gains at this point as I retire ‘soon’. So, your explanation of 4 years of cash for my expenses-setting aside/protecting it these last 2 years then my first 2 years into retirement makes so much sense to me!! Thank you! Very interesting approach. What would you suggest for the person to retire in 2 years which is a dividend income investor with, let say, the same 600K invested in dividend and covered calls ETFs with very conservative 8% return? That's $48k yearly income without selling shares and even with possible market correction the principal could go down, but income flow will continue adjusted for inflation. Why would the one in a such situation to keep 4 years in "cash"?

The first time I watched this, I thought you were saying to stop contributing to a 401K. This time, listening more carefully, I think you are saying put money into bonds/cash within the 401K rather than into stocks. Is that correct? Another option if the stock market is high is to move some of the 401K balance into low risk and out of index stocks.

For tax savings purposes do not let the 401k and IRA total balance exceed 350K so that when you take RMDs at 72 or 75 you do not get killed by taxes. This is why people with large pretax balances are looking to do Roth conversion with great urgency. There is a case for never contributing to IRA or 401ks. I believe even Josh is going or has gone 100% Roth and VTI in a brokerage account. I could be mistaken.
