    As a Filipino, Vietnam has left a lasting impact on me. Despite its troubled history, the country's remarkable economic growth and stability truly stand out. On the other hand, the Philippines still faces various challenges in terms of development and security. Vietnam, however, seems like the perfect place for a peaceful retirement due to its potential for long-term stability. It's worth mentioning that the Philippines heavily relies on rice imports from Vietnam, which raises concerns about food security. Additionally, the different approaches taken by the two countries in handling the Covid-19 pandemic highlight their contrasting strategies and how their leaders prioritize their people. While the Philippines can be a suitable retirement option for those with substantial savings, Vietnam appears to be a more appealing choice for middle-class retirees.

    The Philippines is still a 3rd world poverty country because of rampant corrutpion, that is killing the country from progressing and shunning away major investors, major companies, most are flocking to Vietnam and Thailand. The Philippines main export is slave labor, it imports 99% of products are from China who dumps nothing but garbage food to the Philippines.

And tons of choices of Food than PH! and the food in Vietnam is way cheaper compared to PH! The only thing is the Language of Vietnam is quite difficult to learn😂 But then again, Vietnam still growing, and when the country progresses, Definitely everything goes up too.

    Deciding which of the 2 countries to retire in is difficult. I have been to the Philippines 5 times, soon to be 6 but so far have never seen a city I think would be good for me. Last year i spent 5 nights in Bangkok and 10 nights in Da Nang and I was so impressed with Da Nang and even though I was not thinking of moving there, I could see myself been very happy there. I could imagine riding a push bike down by the sea, playing golf, spending time in the Gym and exploring more of Vietnam. I loved the city, the people, the coffee and the delicious food and having a lovely beach there makes it ideal.

    I've traveled and lived in many different countries, one thing I can say is, yes some countries have better food, have better infrastructure and may be a little cheaper, but one thing I can say is the way the people treat you, and how friendly the people are and how social they are and welcoming and warm and helpful to complete strangers. The Philippines wins by a landslide, hands down. Most places I've traveled the people tolerate you and it shows, and they don't want you to live there long term, the Philippines and Panama are two places where you can feel at home and the people will look after you, Philippines is a great home base

My Khe is one of the nicest beaches I have ever seen. Next time you go back there, check out the area on the riverside. A lot less touristy. Nice riverside walks. Probably better during rainy season where you won't get that cold breeze off the ocean. It was only about a 20 minute walk to the ocean and the main tourist area.

    Totally agree about the language and communication, Dan. Myself, I would rather be in a more authentic surrounding, where pointing to this or that and simple "thank you"s and smiles are understood. When I was talking with a British friend of mine in Bangkok, I mentioned how marrying a Thai woman could mean she could talk about things with her friends and family right in front of you without you knowing what they're saying. He said, true, but maybe that's a good thing to not understand and not have to be involved with or worry about. So true. :)

    Hi qiang and dan as a malaysian and neutral , here are my observations of both. 1. Usually land locked countries are more developed compared to islands. Goods and services flow easily. 2. With software and hardware like time kettle, language barrier becomes lesser in non English speaking countries. 3. If in malaysia a jab cost usd 100, next day the pm must resign. Yes malaysia is top 3 in medical tourism if not no 1. 4. Agree, vietnamese food is healthier. Philippine food (native), is limited in choice. I am not talking about western food offered in Philippines. 5. It is expensive moving around in Philippines. Ferries then buses then planes. Never ending. 6. Americans go there to find girls for relationship in Philippines. Fact. 7. I would say beaches are better in the Philippines if you like beaches and water activities. 8. Traffic - both countries are chaotic.

I would recommend visiting PH 1st because of the english speaking population and christian based society along with abundant nature scenery. However for settling down I would recommend VN due to 2 major factors: cuisine & security. So for a win-win scenario coming from an older westerner's point of view, go to PH 1st, marry a younger PH women, then move to VN to retire there. She'll be very happy as she is always a couple hours plane trip away from her large family.

    Spent 3 months over winter '19-'20 riding a wiggly lap around all Vietnam north to south. Spent a YEAR riding circles slowly around most of the PH's main islands, then tried to retire there for 4 more years until sick of it. My summary: Vietnam is cheaper, cleaner, more organized, but the food outside cities is boring. And an old expat ain't gonna have a 21 year old hottie unless he is paying lots. The Vietnamese in general are not nearly as welcoming or friendly as Pinoys. The Philippines has one overriding benefit, Poontang. A 30 year age gap is quite common for a night or a wedding. The English is a definite bonus as is the visa issue. BUT, the local food absolutely sucks, worst in Asia, though cities will have lots of western places. Many things are kind of expensive, like hotels, petrol. electricity, OR its fairly incompetent, such as water systems, wifi, power grid, restaurant service, health care, driving, school system, etc.. The PH is still in the 3rd world while Vietnam is not. But the Filipinas are the hottest girls on the planet. Try both, but do not sell your house back home.

Once my two German friends were stranded in remote area in Palawan and had.nowhere to sleep. A local family invited them in and had them slept iin their bed while the hosts slept on the floor. In the Philippines you must have an onward ticket. Is the same required in Malaysia?

  • @VagabondAwake

    @VagabondAwake

    3 ай бұрын

    Great question @mixnmichael1, Here is what I do. As you have probably heard we almost never buy round-trip tickets. We move forward slowly traveling the world. But some countries require a return ticket or onward flight before they allow entry. But the rules change all the time so don't assume what I am about to tell you is true for any airline or country. You have to check every time. But if they require a return ticket or onward flight, here is what we do. When you try to board your flight going to the country, with a one-way ticket, the airline will ask for proof of a return flight or an onward flight. We handle this in three possible ways. If you can find a refundable ticket a few hours before you board your flight, buy that, and cancel after you clear customs at your destination. If not, buy an onward flight from one of the online companies that offer onward flights. They cost about $12 USD. Just Google the words "Onward Flights" and a few will pop up. Basically they put your name on a flight leaving the country on whatever date you say and they email you a confirmation that you can show to prove you have an onward flight. But if you decide to buy the $12 onward flight, show up at the airport 3 hours early. We had one refused by the airline only once in the last 5 years. So that brings up the third way. When your $12 onward flight is refused, step out of line, and log on with your computer or smartphone and buy the cheapest flight you can find exiting the country. For example, we search online for the cheapest ticket to a nearby country, leaving that country. Then you lose much less money than you would if you bought a roundtrip ticket to your home country. Skyscanner is the best place to find cheap tickets in our experience. Some countries will also let you buy an onward train or bus ticket to another country which can be even cheaper. Use RometoRio.com to find those. Best, Dan

    I understand that Vietnam doesn't give out retirement Visa currently. So how do you retire in Vietnam?

  • @VagabondAwake

    @VagabondAwake

    19 күн бұрын

    If you have been around me long enough, you know Vietnam is one of my favorite countries in the world. But Vietnam has no retirement visa. Yet, every time we visit Vietnam, we meet many older Western people who have been here for years. Many of you asked why I didn’t ask Mark what visa he has. I have never met anyone that is overstaying a visa in Vietnam and Mark is not overstaying. Everyone I meet has permission to be in Vietnam. If you are a rule follower, you should only follow the official rules to stay in a country. That is what I recommend (and that is what Mark has done). But if you ever fall in love with a country and want to stay ... ask a few expats off camera how they stay in a country without overstaying their visa. Many people all over the world find ways to stay in countries they love. But if it doesn’t sound perfectly legit to me, I never promote it on my channel ... for two reasons. One, I don’t want to disrupt the lives of older people who are happily living in a country somewhere by publicly sharing controversial solutions that could get shut down if they became widely known because of me. Two, I don’t want to publicly encourage a large number of people to use the same controversial solutions ... it might embarrass officials and place me on a shit list. Instead, do exploratory visits, ask ex-pats questions off-camera, decide where you want to live and pick the best way for you personally to make that happen. That said ... I will be sharing more details about the various ways people are staying in Vietnam long-term as I learn more off-camera from the expats I meet here. Make sure to jump on my email list if you want to hear more controversial things that I am much more likely to share in an email after I have learned more. I'm going to spend all of next month in Vietnam! I'm a little uncomfortable because I don't think I'll be able to get an international motorbike license for the Ha Giang loop and Nha Trang coastal ride. Aren't you tempted to get a motorbike in Vietnam? Great info again!

    You don't really need a license. They'll never ask you for one.

    @@gladeous4161 Whoaa, that would be great! I've heard about police checkpoints along the Ha Chiang loop(s) and how tour guides will sometimes drive unlicensed drivers past the checkpoints. And also how unlicensed visitors should not use English with the cops and be prepared to be extorted for some money to avoid a higher consequence.

    @@VagabondAwake I spent the month of April there and rode the Ha Giang Loop and in Hanoi, Danang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh and Phu Quoc. Never saw a single cop patrolling the streets. HOWEVER, as I KZreadrs have warned, I DID get stopped at the checkpoints (twice) on the Ha Giang Loop and was extorted for $80 USD.

    I heard you can only lease land in Vietnam, not buy it, we are hoping to leave the UK , there are myself -66, husband Jim 77, my son 40, his wife 30 and 5 children aged under 8. We have our pensions but want a piece of land around 3 acres with a small house that we can build on a "granny annex" for us grandparents, 😀 we have an income between us of £3,000 a month but want to grow our own everything 😉 and trade for what we don't grow ourselves, can you help with advice please, we are English but hate the western attitude, we need our grandchildren out of that system as soon as possible.

    You can’t actually own land in Vietnam or the Philippines however you can do long term land leases from 1 to 25 years. So that is a win.

    Hi Jackie, I am Canadian by birth and have resided in SE Asia for several decades now, primarily Viet Nam. Non Vietnamese are not allowed to own raw land (however laws are becoming easier in that regard) Land is Also decreasing in price, so land lease prices will reflect that. Lom Doung province is an area you should look into, it's the best area for someone from your geographic background. Da Lat, would be a good place to start from... you can spiral out from there (Da Lat is expensive) however it's close to many mountious areas that adventurous westerns are migrating too. 3k a month is a substantial amount of monies to live on here, even in a major city... it's a small fortune in the countryside... Vietnam has upgraded its banking systems vigorously over the years and it is very much first world here in many regards. Vietnam will join the BRICS+ Nations soon and we have become quite independent from the Global North. we are arguably the most stable country in Asia which is why we have become one of the fastest growing economy's in Asia There is pollution issues in Hanio, and since more manufacturers have moved from China to Vietnam (primarily to the province of Dong Nai) Saigon is showing the stress from that, but you will be a long way from any of those big city issues. Spend a year looking around, lots to see and experience. My wife and I spent a few years building a house in Lom Doung and it was a blast... Good luck and fortune to you and your family...
