Retinal Detachment | Types, Risk Factors, Pathophysiology, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Retinal detachment is an ophthalmological (eye) condition involving the tear, ripping, or separation (“detachment”) of the light-sensitive layer (the retina) from other layers within the eye. There are 3 types of retinal detachment, each of which has their own risk factors and pathophysiological mechanisms. In this lesson, we discuss the risk factors for each type of retinal detachment, including the signs and symptoms, how it is diagnosed and how it is treated by clinicians.

I have had 5 retina detachments, I have buckles on both eyes. I have developed advanced glaucoma in both eyes from all the trauma from the surgery's. Cataract surgery in both eyes & multiple laser and cryotherapy's. I think that's it but I'm starting to lose track, Oh yea I have diplopia too. LOL I can actually see pretty well considering, I have been able to drive up until this week. I have a fantastic retina specialist, he saved my vision many times! I'm having optic nerve trouble now, my glaucoma is starting to win the battle just in the last few months. I'm afraid I'm headed for the dark room now, but I have prepaired myself mentally for this final chapter in my life.

I was born with retinal detachment! They never caught it in time to fix it! I could see light but that was it! Then in my 20s I developed glaucoma and they were unable to control the pressure so I eventually lost my eye! But I was miserable and had to live in the dark and my eye constantly watered 24/7 and flinching hurt so badly! You can’t even tell it’s there!!

What is the success rate of the surgery. My mum had cataract surgery and they couldn’t fix an IOL because the pupil couldn’t hold it. Now they’ve diagnosed RD and they’re ruling out surgery while she feels very uncomfortable because of the filters and visual disturbances. Only one eye is affected. What’s the way forward to reduce the filters and disturbances?

Hi, I have an issue with retinal detachment . It was affected around 25 years ago. At the age of 16 I had lost my right eye. However, I have good vision on the other eye. Now the sited vision is coming down gradually. Here I want to know that By any chance I am able to retrieve the vision back?? On the other eye does it require any further treatment to avoid the ? Please advise.

Before my retina detached I noticed my eye was darker than the other one. Didn't think much of it. Mentioned it to my optometrist and he didn't see anything. About 2 weeks later I could not see hardly anything. Went to the emergency room and they scheduled surgery the morning. Ok for now. See an opthalmologist if you have issues.
