Rethinking how we treat endometriosis | Linda Griffith | TEDxMIT

About 10% of women have endometriosis, yet molecular subtypes and non-hormonal therapies have yet to be defined, leaving tens of millions of women around the world suffering. At MIT, scientists in Biological Engineering are working with surgeons around the world to define molecular subtypes related to immune and invasion networks using a combination of experimental and machine learning approaches. Patients are then reconstructed from tissue biopsies, to test the mechanistic hypotheses about new non-hormonal therapies.

    I'm researching about endometriosis and you literally got to be your own advocate. Doctors just looked at me like I was crazy. My doctor didn't tell me what endometriosis really is , what causes it and the damage it can do to other parts of your body. I'm having random pains and don't know why. Didn't know about foods to stay away from.

I was able to finally get the laparoscopy surgery ( investigative b.c they suspected endometriosis as we've been struggling to get pregnant & I've lost 3 ) they did find very mild endometriosis in the ovarian cavity & not even the tubes or uterus. I was having such bad periods & it was only so mild. Some women have it severe & don't have symptoms at all. It's such a crazy disease. But we are finding now it is an estrogen dominant condition, so hormonal imbalance. I'm glad they are touching more on this

    Endometriosis is a fully reversible condition. It is mostly caused by a high-carbohydrate diet. Carbs = inflamation + insulin = hormone disruption = endometriosis Fastest and safest way to completely reverse endometriosis is to stop eating carbs. In other words, try the carnivore (or keto) diet for three months. I guarantee you that your life will be completely changed for the better if you do carnivore for just 90 days. Look up Dr. Kiltz. He is a fertility doc that combines cutting edge western medicine with diet to recover fertility. You don't need to be on birth control. You don't need surgery. You don't need to live with that pain and suffering. Change your diet and in 90 days you'll feel like you have a completely different body.

    Thank you. I had a radical hysterectomy all due to pain. At first the surgeon did not think he could convince the insurance to cover for 'pain only'...but he DID! Half my life from 6th grade had been consumed with the dread of debilitating pain which, back in the mid-60's, was 'in my head.' My daughter unfortunately shares the same ordeal. When the surgeon was finished with me he said he has never before seen a liver tethered down by endometriosis. During the laparoscopic surgery he freed as much of the liver as he could without coming dangerously close to the heart. For the first time I got my life back in my mid-50's but have been on low dose estrogen since the mid-60's when they knew of no other way to treat this dreaded pain...a pain that clocks in a *multiple times* the natural birthing pain. Thank you for your dedication to such important research that will surely benefit a great many women if for no other reason than being, finally, heard. 🌷🙏

    If I may ask, why did they choose to do a hysterectomy? And if it wasn't endo, what was it? In my case, I have endometriosis, PCOS (which for now is controlled), and fibroids. I was lucky but every time I went through surgery, they would make me sign a term in which a hysterectomy was an option in case anything went wrong. Hugs from South America.

    This is great for you to do this. I’ve been brushed off by SEVERAL doctors regarding the pain I experience. Including women doctors. The last couple year the extreme abdominal and back pain has been persistent as ever but I’ve also developed nausea and constipation. The constipation starts before my period and lasts until after my period. It feels like my whole body is turning against me really. For a long time I was thinking maybe I have PCOS I have a new friend I was talking to and I was telling her about this and she told me to look into endometriosis and I have. Now I’m like omg do I have this? I got my period when I was 8. I’m 32 now and all my life I’m dying from pain when I bleed. It’s awful. I’ve consulted several doctors about this experience including gynecologists and an endocrinologist and nothing came from it other than they think I’m some kind of hypochondriac. 😢

    First, let me say that I am so sorry that you have had to live like this. I understand. I am 49 and have both PCOS & endometriosis, which was surgically diagnosed. Sadly, many doctors do not understand endometriosis. It's been awhile since someone brushed it off. You need to find a OB/gyn that specializes in pelvic pain. Mine is Dr. Julia Keltz in Mamaroneck, NY. Reproductive endocrinologist's, in my opinion, just want to get you to pay for expensive fertility treatments. Unfortunately, you have to be the most informed and your strongest advocate. If the doctors in your area do not believe you, print out some data on endometriosis. Tell them you have all the symptoms. They will likely start you on some kind of birth control, b/c they are supposed to regulate your hormones. Endo is in large part mediated by estrogen. I am too sensitive to estrogen, so I have been on Medroxyprogesterone. I also found that Spironolactone helped my endo b/c it helped reduce testosterone imbalance from PCOS. The progesterone stopped my periods, which relatively helped with the pain. I say relatively, b/c I have pain nearly all the time; I think b/c I went so long being undiagnosed. Early diagnosis is really important, so you need to get this taken care of stat. Frankly, your endo sounds so bad that if I were you, I'd get excision surgery and then start a regimen of progesterone daily to stop you from getting periods. Unless you are trying to get pregnant. Still, get excision surgery, & maybe one ovary removed, combined with hormonal suppression might bring you to a state of relief. I myself am hoping to get excision surgery from Dr. Lora Liu in NYC. There aren't a ton of excision surgeons out there, but excision is supposed to be the best at removing much or all of the endometriotic lesions. Surgery is also considered the only definitive way at diagnosing endo. Though I've heard that specific kinds of MRI can see where the endo is. What else? I take cyclobenzaprine (a muscle relaxer) as needed for pelvic spasms. It feels like a pulling sensation and it's like cramps on steroids. I also tried Lupron, which didn't help and dr. didn't tell me I'd need to be on 1mg of Estradiol (estrogen). When I added it, my insides freaked out. I felt like I had cuts in my abdomen and many places in body, especially pelvis. Now they have a pill form of something similar to Lupron called 'Orlissa'. I also tried an IUD that would release progesterone, but my uterus did nothing but spasm. I've never been pregnant, so the uterus is more likely to reject it if you haven't been. As soon as she yanked it out the pain stopped. A heating pad can be surprisingly helpful since it relaxes the muscles that are tensed up from pain. I also avoid eating soy or flax, b/c they are very estrogenic and I notice they cause my pelvic pain to flare. That, of course, could be different for each person. I have been advised to get pelvic physical therapy, but I've been dealing with other med issues that take precedent, such as my diabetes. Thankfully, at 49 I seem to be in peri-menopause and at times the pain seems to go into remission. Seriously, I can't wait for full menopause. So there's my lifetime's worth of knowledge about endo! Finding the right doctors and getting the right treatments is at times like finding a needle in a haystack, so I hope it helps some of you and saves you some of the difficulty that comes with having this disease. Lastly, be gentle on yourself. You didn't do anything to deserve this disease. So try to enjoy life as much as you can when you are not sick. Be good to yourself. You are not your disease. 💜

    This is fascinating. I suffer with endometriosis, adenomyosis, hypothyroidism and a year ago diagnosed with Axial Spa. A lot of autoimmune diseases. I would never have thought my gynae disease was also autoimmune. Was treated with hormone therapy and medically induced menopause treatments. But of course it always comes back. Im now on biologics for my Axial spa. I wonder if this will also alleviate my gynae issues at the same time. I do believe it’s a combination of gene variants and immune problems. Would be nice to one day find what triggers these diseases that we seem predisposed to.

    🎉 i suffered for 8 years on endometriosis.... i had episodes of heavy bleeding and no bleeding and contraception seemed to fight against my body's natural cycle and my thyroid became a problem.... hypothyroidism was suspected by my doctor... about two weeks ago I literally felt my thyroid tightening.... The symptoms where there... weight gain without having to eat too much and a thyroid stomach.... the tightened thyroid scared me... so I researched and found that I could be lacking iodine... i researched on iodine diets and found kelp as being effective and I ordered it in the form of pills... i take 150 mcg of kelp a day in the morning after food... after three years of No periods in just a week of taking Kelp I have a period ladies and gentlemen.... No Clots, No heavy bleeding, No unbearable pain... (A little normal period pain,)... i am on day two... and I am praying for a normal cycle... 🎉... pray 🙏 with me please.... If this Kelp has always been the answer then it is a secret I want to tell from the testimony... having my period again after nit seeing it for three years is miraculous... I will update here... 🎉❤

    Treatment for endometriosis is taking the contraceptive pill for a year,without the pause days for the bleed. take a pill everyday.After 10 yrs with endo and 2 surgeries,I am now cured for the last 5 years.I repeat. I am not on the pill now. was only for a year. inducing a menopause with the contraceptive pill,the endometriosis cells will die and will not return. it was a blessing for me.

  • @Krifpumpumkrify

    @Krifpumpumkrify

    That's what I was searching for. The addendum about saying it isn't genetic. All valid studies indicate that if someone in your bloodline has it, you are at a high probability of having it. Maybe they have been able to disprove this and cam with certainty point to epigenetic or environmental factors. If they have found that out though I think it would be bigger news.

    I don't think this says that it's not genetic, but rather that the way to address the problem is not by addressing/looking at the genes. They're searching for way to cure ppl and not to "just" research things likegenes. Because what use is it to know you have genes that put you atr risk of endo. Now what? It's empty information X'D

    It's way more complex than just nutrition. An antiinflammatory diet (no sugar, low in carbs) can definitely help the symptoms improve but it does not solve the disease nor is it the cause!!!
